Shows that haven't been seen anywhere in years

I was thinking today about the old series My Friend Flicka, which certainly hasn't been around in awhile (but maybe it's in the public domain).

I was reading the Wikipedia article on the show, and didn't know that it only ran 1 season, 39 eps. It was still shown in reruns many years later. It was filmed in color, but I don't think I ever saw it that way. I have seen one Lone Ranger color ep with 1956 copyright, same year as most of the Flicka eps.

The series called Fury hasn't been around for awhile either, and it was filmed from 1955 to 1960 and was still in reruns on NBC on Saturday morning until 1966.

cd....just horsin' around.....

Room 222
Gidget (in all her various incarnations). Except for the first two original theatrical movies that show up periodically on TCM, everything else has disappeared.
Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home

Both Gidget & The Flying Nun are on Antenna TV every weekend, along with The Monkees.....it seems that Antenna won't budge from giving these ones a rest on weekends!

Gidget as a TV show ran only 1 year, anyway, and it's quite dated!

Is it true that "Gidget" really had pretty good ratings but was pulled for "other reasons"?

Joe

From what I read elsewhere, ratings didn't pick up until summer reruns. By then, ABC made the cancellation decision, and couldn't reverse the decision in time for the upcoming fall season.

Everything from back then is dated.

I was eating dinner in a bistro last night that shows old Ozzie & Harriet episodes. This one had Ozzie going fishing in his dress slacks and shoes and wearing a dressy sweater. Of course, he was driving his 1957 Chrysler Bigga-Boat convertible with gigantic tail fins and w i d e whitewalls.

My kids just laugh when they see that and ask "was it really like that"? I always find a reason not to answer.

Which is why they quickly put together another starring vehicle for Sally Field that premiered the following year--The Flying Nun.

Gidget was on opposite The Beverly Hillbillies. It didn't have much of a chance (even if it had been a better show).

For a show that has weak numbers and gets cancelled in its first season, it's unusual for the star to be given a second series so quickly (The Flying Nun).

Harry Ackerman and Screen Gems believed they had a star in Sally, so they put together The Flying Nun. Sally actually turned them down, and another actress had started shooting the pilot before her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, convinced her she was risking never getting another show again.

In January 1966 "Gidget" was moved to Thursdays against
"Gilligan's Island" and the second half-hour of "Daniel Boone."
I don't know if the ratings rose appreciably, even with "Batman"
as lead-in. My guess as to why Sally Field got another show so
quickly (BTW, she appeared occasionally on NBC's "Hey Landlord!"
in the 1966-67 season) is either (a) she had high Q (likability) scores,
or (b) Screen Gems/Columbia Pictures Television was high on her and
thought she had star potential.

Don't forget that the Smothers Brothers' first show, their failed sitcom,
was canceled in September 1966, and they were back in February 1967
with their far-more-successful comedy-variety hour. That, too, was in
part a product of likability; CBS found that viewers liked the brothers
but couldn't stand the premise of Tommy as an angel.

LOL So true...I was watching "Have Gun Will Travel" on my pc, when my Micro Soft de-greed son walks in and starts to ask me something...mid question he stops and asks "what's wrong with your monitor"? I said 'NOTHING"...he said 'but there's no color"..Had to inform him that once upon a time...there were only three networks (after the demise of DuMont)..and they were all in black and white..he wouldn't accept that..so I had to show him my monitor was fine by switching back to color...KIDS ::)

Reminds me of 1982, when my own son startled me with this revelation: Dad, did you know Paul McCartney used to be with the Beatles?

This thread makes me wonder if my idea for a Pizza restaurant would work..first I know have to have a good pizza..but my idea was to have properly placed big screens and play classic TV shows in this manner..Monday.. comedy's as Hogans Hero's, Get Smart, Batman..etc, Tuesday Detective night, Barnaby Jones, Mannix, etc you see the idea...each day beginning around 4pm...running themed nights for classic tv from the 60's and 70's..western night, spy night...with tons of dvd's to stock up on..playing them all in proper sequence just as they aired back then running them back to back each night, one western followed by another, then another etc....for instance...three seasons of Wanted Dead or Alive..one episode per week on western night..would take quite a while to play the entire library, as you would perhaps play High Chaparral next...it's an idea I've had for several years now..seems like a great idea for that generation..bringing the kids and grand kids in...or hell coming in without the family..just a bunch of guys or gals out for a night..don't think I've ever heard of such a concept..now I'm hungry for pizza..lol

In 1982, when "Police Squad!" had its great but short run on ABC, I wonder how many double-takes from viewers happened when the announcer cried out, "Police Squad! In color!"

I understand that it was the same guy who did all the Quinn Martin series' announcing, and he was called out of retirement to do that bit. It was fantastic.
