Sirius/XM App

I've had Sirius satellite radio in my car for years, but unfortuantely, I wasn't in my car very often, except for the drive to and from work. I also live in the downtown Dallas area, so am not in my car hardly at all after work and on weekends. I walk or ride the rail/trolley everywhere. Plus, we can't download anything on our computers at work, so I couldn't listen at work either. So...when my subscription ran out in November, I never got around to renewing it. But once I heard Howard Stern was going to be added to the smart phone application in January, I purchased the 12.95/monthly app. and now listen to Sirius/xm on my Iphone. I can plug it into my car, listen at work, listen at the gym, on the train...it's awesome. So awesome, that I've not listened to a single bit of DFW radio in almost a month!!! I do occasionally miss the local programming, mostly local talk, but what we've got here is just so crappy!! I don't even miss the Ticket for sports..the Sirius offerings for sports is even better, imo. I'm not trashing terrestrial radio. I went to Austin last week and still tuned in to 101.5, and I still stream several stations from other parts of the country. But DFW radio has to be one of the worst markets quality wise in the nation. I don't know if I'll ever be back.

I don't blame you. Between the endless commercials & the new music being lousy these days, there isn't much on the FM dial worth listening to. I listen to local talk on AM - but even the local hosts cover mostly national issues that are repeated over & over again on other outlets. I'd like to hear more local issues instead of regurgitated Fox reports.

That said I like my satrad subscription. I haven't tried the app but I do like the Stern show on my commute. Sucks that Bubba isn't on there anymore but I do like the idea of the east & west coast feed so if one guest isn't interesting, I can switch to the other channel. Baba Booey.

I actually came to the opposite conclusion after I got my smartphone. I found there was so much great radio, both in terms of out of market terrestrial radio and internet radio, that I didn't need satellite at all. After Sirius/XM increased their prices about two years ago, I concluded it was costing me as much for two satellite radios as it was for my smartphone data plan.

Well, I never purchased any satellite radios. And since my smart phone purchase had nothing to do with Sirius radio, it's only costing me 12.95 a month. That's just a couple of lunches at work a week, which I've gladly given up. I do agree, there are some good internet radio stations. Sirius is a data monster though. Luckily, most places I listen, mostly work, have Wi-fi. The only place I use my 3G is in my car, where as I stated earlier, I spend little time there.

If you're lucky enough to have an unlimited data plan these can be great, but I'd always worry about my data usage if I was paying by the gigabyte. Would be interesting to get a ballpark idea of how many meg you download in an hour's commute. Then you'd be able to guesstimate your monthly data usage/bill.

Satellite is still the best deal for me since I travel a lot of rural routes that don't have reliable data service. I listen to the WSM app sometimes when I'm in DFW or in a good service area.

I also have several different apps for several different stations.

I have LBC talk in London. Their network has an app for each of their station formats but it takes up space on my phone.

Good news is they have ALL the formats available from ANY of their apps! So I listen to LBC and if I want to switch to the Gold format or Classical I just go to it from the same app saving valuable space!

Of course once the update for Android 2.2 comes out, I can then move all of them (if the author toggles it) to the SD card as well.

I also have the Yahoo! Music app for CBS Radio, WGN 720 app, Boston 98.6 and others as well.

A friend of mine was shocked to hear LBC clear as a bell from my car stereo. We were driving down the road at 70mph using 3G and not a single drop or burp! And a station from LONDON of all places.

Shockin the Natives again! ;D

I've got an app (Android phone here) called Tune In Radio. It's pretty good in that it has nearly every internet radio station I've ever found. For the Android it's free, but it's not for iPhone, although if I had an iPhone, I would pay for it. It's nice for tuning in The Ticket on the way home and not having to worry about interference.

I have to say this, Oklahoma City radio stations don't play around when it comes to commercials. There is some car ads and some PSA's but, that's why I use my iHeart Radio app to listen to KTST 101.9 in Oklahoma City, plus they get some of the newer music then KSCS will provide in 1 month. Sorry to hate on DFW radio.

I have a sat radio and the app on my Ipod Touch. Since I'm on the road a lot, I listen to the sat radio especially in areas where there isn't much local radio. I love them both.
