Siriusly Sinatra

Had a rental car equipped with Sirius over the weekend and quickly tuned to channel 75, the new "Siriusly Sinatra."

It seemed that about 60 percent of the music was by Frank. Even for a huge Sinatra enthusiast like me, this seemed just a little too much. I don't believe that such a large emphasis on one artist - even the Entertainer of the Century - is the best representation of what standards radio can be.

I only hear Sirius occasionally, but I found its previous incarnation of the format, "Standard Time" to be much more listenable.

Also disappointing on "Siriusly Sinatra" - no air personalities!

Thoughts, anyone?

I had an Avis rent car this weekend too, and made the same discovery. It had been a while since I'd listened to Sirius. My current "regular car" has XM although I'd had Sirius in a previous vehicle. I used to like its "Standards 75" format, but the "All Sinatra" format was a bit hard to take. I like Frank. But enough is enough. If I want to hear a lot of him, I’ll just play a CD. After a while, I found myself tuning around to see what else was on.

I was a little surprised that someone would try such a format. It seems like it is narrow-casting taken way to far. I need more variety to hold my attention.

This is unbelievable. I sent an email to someone (it may have been Chuck, but I've never found the email again) saying that I liked the playlist I saw when I was doing some kind of search and landed on the information for some radio station. But the computer didn't have sound, and I'm never where I can conveniently turn on sound. Whoever it was suggested Sirius standards. That was then. This is now.

Sirius can't be Sirius about this. They'll never get people like me. XM has a chance but it still costs too much and I usually have good stations in the car.

Both services cost about the same. I'm not wild about XM, but it looks pretty good compared to this. I don't like "All Elvis" or "All Beatles" either. Unless you are looking to get a TSL measured in single digits, "All Anything" will lose me very quickly.

I absolutely agree about the lack of air personalities. I was a Sirius subscriber for a year and a half, then cancelled it after they dropped Nashville's WSM from the lineup. Although it's classic country (another format I like which I can't get on terrestrial radio), that was the channel I listened to the most because it was the only actual radio station in the lineup. Why pay $13 a month for something that sounds like nothing more than my CD player?

Maybe satellite radio would have a larger appeal if they did carry actual stations from all over the country, in addition to the syndicated services like Dial Global and Music of Your Life.

I didn't say Sirius cost more or less, but when you figure in the cost of equipment both for the car and at home ... and I found out you have to have a separate monthly fee for each receiver.

I get classic country in the car ;D (most of the time, depending on exactly where I am) but not at home. :(

That does sound like a good idea, but then where is the financial incentive for Dial Global and Music of Your Life?

I will say I heard Music of Your Life on the way to the beach and it's unbelievable. Now "I Got a Name" by Jim Croce is kind of a curious choice among all those great songs, but I guess they have to keep younger people from getting bored.

I get Dial Global enough of the time, I guess. I wish I could hear it on Saturday, but now NFL football has bumped an oldies show to Saturday morning and college football has done away with afternoon. Sunday is out, of course.
