I realize that Skip is getting older, but I wasn't aware of any health problems. What's he been going through?

Mybe Skip should take what Pete Van Wieren is aking. Pete seems sharp and refreshed!

The Professor is always on his A game. And he's a great guy too!

Here's the short list: diabetes, congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeat and reduced kidney & liver function. He is one more "health problem" away from being Montgomery Burns. I'm not a doctor, but I have watched "Scrubs." CHF is life-threatening. No wonder Chip moved back here.

BTW, Skip is 68, that is a little young to be dealing with all that. There must have been some hard living going on there.

Skip has made no bones about his heavy drinking, etc. over the years. Back in the 1970`s/80`s he would sometimes be drunk on Braves telecasts. I have heard him admit this before and Ernie Johnson Sr. even told some stories about it in an interview a few years ago. Ernie said that Skip has told many of these same stories to others. No big news there. I like Skip and what he brings to the game. Is he no longer on Peachtree TV? Everytime that I watch them, I get Chip, his son.

In the '80s, when the Braves had Caray, The Professor, Ernie Johnson Sr., and John Sterling, there was not a finer baseball broadcasting crew anywhere.

This topic is about Caray, but I do recall when Johnson retired in 1989 and they had a special day to honor him.

Braves then were lousy- finishing last in attendance and the standings. Generally less than 10,000 showed up for games.

They drew more than 41,000 people in the stadium that day for Johnson.

Obviously wish the best for Caray. I didn't realize he was 68. You don't expect an institution like that to age.

Final question- when did the Braves get rid of the "It's a Brand New Game, Good to Have You Along, Hope You're Ready to Cheer!" lead-in with a Dixieland Band?

Heck, when did it start? 1966? It seemed soooooo dated, but after awhile it actually was so bad it grew on you.

Anyone have a copy of it? I think I miss it!

It had to be in the early to mid 70's. Somewhere in my vast boxes of collectibles (my wife says junk) I have a 45 RPM record (remember those?) that has "It's A Brand New Game on one side and on the flip is the Braves team singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" with a narration featuring Buzz Capra. Proceeds from the record went to the Cancer Society becasue Capra's father had recently died from the disease.

"Batter up, let's go, pitcher's starting to throw, and we're all so glad that we came, 'cause it's a BRAND NEW GAME!"

Last time I heard it was in 1991, before the Bravos switched from WSB to WGST for 92-94. It didn't seem to make the trip from White Columns, and I haven't heard it since. I thought that WSB would have brought it back in 1995, but no dice.

I saw Earnie Johnson Sr at the Corner Deli sandwich shop in Alpharetta GA. He was eating breakfast and reading the newspaper. He had his signature cap on and still wore the Braves World Series ring (big ring). I told my friend that was Earnie sitting there. My friend did not recognize him at first as Earnie looked like any other senior citizen eating. We did not bother him. My friend and I talked about how we enjoyed his announcing skills over the years.

I remember also the big fire that was caused in the WGST booth at the old Atlanta Fulton County stadium.

Good grief. First Larry Munson and now this. What's next, no Santa?

Chip only calls the road games on radio unless he's doing PTV or TBS then former Braves secondbaseman Mark Lemke calls the games with Pete Van Wiren. Last Saturday Joe Simpson was on the radio.

I wish Skip the very best. I had noticed the decline in his voice this year and I am sad to hear it, but it does happen to everyone.

I have always enjoyed hearing Skip on both Radio and TV.

One of my favorite Skip quotes during the lean years was heard at the end of many a game:

"Once again the Braves have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory."

A quote that could also be used frequently in the past weeks.

Yeah, Skip's health problems have weakened him but it's still good to hear his familiar voice.

It's too bad what happened with Time Warner selling off the team and the broadcast rights that the gang of Skip, Pete, Don, and Joe got broken up.

Another "Skipism": The attendance was 35,308, most disguised as blue seats.

I can`t believe that Skiop is gone! RIP-Skip!!!!!!!!
