Yeah, is that "out" for good, or just "out" for the day? :-\

Given that K-104 just fell out of the Top 10 for the first time since 1994, and for only the second time since 1977, I'm not surprised someone's head has rolled. And the summer's usually been very kind to K-104 in years past.

BUT...what's the real reason going on here? The Beat is barely a contender anymore. Is the audience outgrowing the format, or into their own iPod, or are people finally tiring of the hate that laces so much of that musical genre? If that's the case, well, move hip-hop and rap over to 105.7, and reinvent K-104 as a station that caters to a slightly older crowd.

Hell, bring back the Disco Soul format from the late 70s...that'll get ME tuning in!

Hey, don't jump all over me about it. I don't know who listens and who the format really appeals to these days. Just making an observation that *SOMETHING'S* changed. I don't know what it is, but the listenership is obviously down for some reason.

Uhh... hate and violence were popular hiphop themes in the '90's. But now hiphop is all about money, clothes, cars, sex and women. Rap music is pretty much just pop music or hipPop as I've heard some people call it. Although surburban white kids love it, I think current rap and/or hiphop aims to appeal to kids in general. When I hear rap music these days, which isn't often, I always feel to old to be listening to it. It's awful and childish. Granted, I'm 37....but I started feeling that way in my mid 20's. The genre has continued it's downward spiral since then.

There are stations all over that are doing well with PPM so don't blame K104's problems on PPM. I agree that things started to slide when the master, Ken Dowe, left the building. K104 bask in the limelight for many years under his direction and you can accept it or deny it! Ken Dowe made K104 what it was and now Hymen and his flunkeys are about bringing it down. Hymen, get a clue and get back to your roots!

^^^ I don't think so. K-104 thrived under the old diary system by default due to heritage, and Dowe's overspinning of power songs won't have worked in the PPM environment.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the format (18-34 oriented) is kinda of dry these days and the market's urban music population is kind of stretched thin. K-104 has the largest cume of any urban in the market and could musically go after some of the 25-34 year olds that can't receive either 105.7 or K-SOUL in their office during the midday hours. They could start dayparting the station and slowing down the spins of power songs, and maybe the some of the audience will return. Heritage urban stations with M-F dayparting usually fair better than those that go straight 12-24 yr-old target with the same old tired playlist that could be hear at any time of the day.

Top 40 is now what hip hop used to be.

Wow.. For a long time I have considered Mike to be the best and most sincere source of broadcast information in this market... Few people seem to have the love of radio and desire for truth that Mike has.. Mike does not shout, ridicule or call names.....Maybe Mike isn't your problem..... ::)

RE: "THERE IS NO ROOM IN A WHITE PPM MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR 4 URBAN STATIONS."

Hey, that's not true! I remember as a kid at Berkner High School back in the mid 70's, I just couldn't wait for the "Smack My Bitch Up" genre to come along.
