According to a posting from his Facebook page he's hangin' up the headphones after 17 years. It's really a shame as it was Skyy that really shaped and molded the BPM that everyone loved. He also was responsible for bringing another station that means a lot to the Dance format to life and thats Party 105. Not to mention his work with WKTU.

I guess we'll have to stay posted to see what's next for him. I wish him nothing but continued success.

He was at KTU when it was a dance station, and that is what got me hooked on dance music. He was at Party 105 when it was playing much more dance than it is now. And he made BPM great. I'm going to miss him. Hopefully he'll find a place at WNYZ.
 
The one thing I am glad about is the fact that during the past week on BPM, the music sounded better and that's basically because Skyy was given "carte blanche" on running BPM the way things were, pre-merger. THAT was the Skyy we all knew, not what has happened over the past couple of months or so on that station playing 80's and 90's music at times that were "off format". On the Facebook BPM board, you can "feel" how upset and down people are about this.

Unfortunately, SiriusXM has been losing money and this was just another round of layoffs occurring.

I wish Skyy the very best! :)
 
I wish they would realize that fans of pure dance listen to BPM. Fans of pop music listen to one of the 3 CHRs on Sirius XM or a CHR on FM. BPM doesn't need to be a Pulse 87 in terms of pop remixes, it should be more like Energy 98. In fact, people might like it better if Sirius XM just simulcasted Energy 98.
I'm kicking myself for not listening to BPM as much as I should have last week. Since last week was the first week after the DTV transition, I was listening to Pulse 87 on my commute all week since its signal improved.

No diss to Skyy.....but if we are going to talk about the molding of the sound of BPM, Mr. Freed gets that nod in my book. Which is amazing considering the contributions he did for radio in the 50's! LOL ;)

(NOTE: Someone on the BPM Facebook board representing the station referred to Alan Freed as the legendary 50's jock, instead of THIS one, that programmed BPM as well as Beat Radio)
 
Alan's contributions were no doubt extremely important in getting the station founded and on the right track. My point is that Skyy, during his time at BPM, turned the station into something that, I thought, was much more than it was. So for me, he brought the station to it's peak performance until the meddling started.

I would respectfully disagree. Personally, I thought BPM was at it's best under Alan Freed's direction, and I hated the changes after he left. When Alan was in charge, there were always tons of great euro imports and more euro dance and trance type tracks. After Skyy took over they went in much more of a NYC circuit house sound (which I didn't care for). The music under Alan was much more in line with my tastes, plus we had great features like the 33 1/3 Countdown and the new music show, that Skyy cut when he arrived. To me, BPM was much more interesting and diverse sounding under Freed. After Skyy took over, it all sounded the same and very monotonous. Just my opinion and personal tastes though.
 
Well if they simulcast Energy 98, they could just do that like they do with BBC Radio 1 and just have an additional dance channel on there as well. The simulcast could be useful on one of the 876 rock channels that exist. Christmas is only a few months away. The season for giving will be here soon. Lets get into the spirit early, and Sirius could be the first to start off with giving up one of the rock channels for the use as an additional dance channel. I'll be very thankful if this could happen by November.
 
Yup, well party is officially over. The party ended for me with the merger. We know where Geronimos nose is now, don't we?
 
I don't really need BPM anymore, I can get dance music almost anywhere in the state of New Jersey on FM :)
 
I should probably just move to the east coast of the United States...Party 105.... Power 96....etc. but if I go there, then I might as well continue all the way on to London.

I guess California has some good stations, too.
 
I agree with Reply #7 by BRH. The station was made great and award winning by Alan Freed. His music selections were by far the best of any dj or programmer that BPM ever had. Skyy did okay, when the reins were taken off, with his commentary, but musically the station was at its peak when Alan Freed was doing the programming. Since Alan left, and especially since the merger, I've been finding all kinds of great internet feeds for free that come much closer to Alan's vision than the Beat-lite that the station has become. It's been most disappointing to get hooked on something so good only to see it chiseled away over time crappy programming, reduced playlists, and pop music and the Beat djs with their kids' programming. Just disappointing.

1. SUCKs skyy is leaving ! ( left ). he was awesome ( on aire).
i am not smart enough to understand the politics behind it, the guy
sizzled the microphone...with out recycling the same ol' one liners,
always fresh ! and, it was a delight to talk to some one from western ny...
and remembering dance music when it was reeeely out of control!

am i the only one who still listens to bpm?
to have #33 or so people say yea it sucks (and to show why),
starts to turn other people's heads...maybe for them, may be not -
(if enough say it sucks, you believe it sucks), i for one, do not
disapprove of the current status of: bpm.
to me, i am just getting into that 'cataract' song / 2nite!
maybe i am late to the party, but like NBC tv said, in the early 90s,

meaning: ok, so energy98, played it 56 days before I FIRST HEARD it on bpm,
guess what, i am enjoying it, 8 weeks later!

Agreed 100%. As you said it's personal opinion, but from the moment Freed left, I felt that the sound became homogeneous. I'm liking BPM now more than at any time since Freed was there. In fact a lot of the tracks from that era are getting some play right now and it's sounding pretty decent.
 
Dont go to London for dance unless you want to listen to the pirates or plan on getting DAB or sky digital... BBC R1 is a rock leaning CHR with lots of talk, and only part time Dance,,, Kiss 100 is a CHR Rhythmic that just plays some dance and specialty shows... Go to France, Belgium, or Holland, or Spain,, they have the best and most dance stations. Or just come to Chicago... B-96 is a dance friendly rhythmic, and we have Dance Factory with pure dance at night... or if you can handle cold windy snowy winters, go to Torronto for Z-1035... Other parts of the UK which have the Galaxy network are better than London,, and Scotland has Galaxy as well, and the small village of Luton has Diverse FM 102.8..... South East UK has stations like Juice 107.6,,, similar to Z-1035 Torronto,,, or they were last time I listened a year or two ago..... Australia and parts of Russia have some good dance stations, as does the middle east,,,, but I wouldnt live in Russia because of the cold, crime, Racism, and corruption... As for the Middle east, I probably wouldnt want to live anywhere other than Isreal, or Jordan,,,, Lebanon has some great Dance stations, but it is dangerous there due to Terrorism from Hezbolla....

Seriously though, London has always been like that. Even during the heydays of dance in the 90s when I was travelling around Europe, London was always bad. It never compared to the powerhouses on the continent. Voltage FM, Veronica FM, Globo Radio. Even mainstream CHRs like 101 Network and 40 principales were heavily dance influenced. France, Italy and Spain actually really kicked butt back then. The only other boring market I couldn't stand back then apart from London was the Helvetic Confederation! Yuck! Boring radio when travelling through Zurich and Bern. Granted the country was never a hot bed of great nightlife. Even Luxemburg had great clubs! Ah, the nostalgic days!
