Scott??? Can you look at this tirade and see the validity of this approach in favor of the cut expenses to the bone
approach? Certainly, I understand prudent budgeting, but look at it this way.
this is an updated version of a post from long ago ... things have just not gotten better.
You cannot tell me that running a C-anything FM radio station in (or near) a top 50 market in the United
States of America on a shoestring is acceptable or necessary. You have to put a proactive, well-designed,
well-defined product out for people to listen to and actually like. Cutting corners is saying your not committed
to advertisers or listeners. Doing so actually is what costs Cromwell millions of potential dollars. It turns $$$ away.
AND if if if if if you had to go with no local talent and VT or feed it in, you would think they could afford a system
that doesn't play six commercials at a time and offer ten minutes of dead air and sound like a totally different station.
It's lame. It doesn't sell. It hurts, make that, kills the station. Nashville doesn't have that many stations that these
two stations can't make money.
I don't know Bud Walters, but I have to say he's got to be pretty bright to keep these tin cans floating. Maybe they
are not profitable, I admit I have to wonder. The economy is getting ready to make it tougher for him and all radio.
But, he better get his act together NOW. How much does one more night personality cost? I don't listen to the Buzz.
I try to listen to V-102.5. I agree the music is slightly above average. I think a few tweaks could make the difference
between failure and steady profit.
I think the Buzz is imploding. It's lost its music focus. I swear I'd call it ROCK 103 and bust the roof off with a whole
new beginning. But, Bud seems like he doesn't want anyone in that building that is not a yes man or smarter than
him. I am no different and am headstrong, it took me forever to be willing to admit I could do everything right. Trust me, Bud,
if you are seeing this...or interested... e-mail me for proof of how I learned to let the control go to those who had a focus
and desire to succeed in what they knew and loved and gave up the stress and made much more money with less effort.
Turn loose of the reins and get quality people driven by incentives you all can agree on and give it a shot. You can't take it down much lower. You'll sleep better and be much happier, although I don't know that you are not already. I mean zero attack
on you, here. Step away and look at this from a different angle. Have you asked any real listeners what they want? Stay
the hell away from con-sultants.
Invest in it and the rest will come. Spend all you're time controlling and pinching pennies and watch it just limp
along. I hate to see two properties suffer like this for no real reason.
Look at Q-108 (Rock on Jack Shell) -- these guys are in the middle of nowhere and have ads and community support,
and are a great sounding station with life, energy and passion flows from the place. How they can do it, stations in
Cookeville can do it and yet two stations in Nashville cannot do it is total BS.
Thanks for letting me put this out there. I'd like Nashville to be the best sounding radio market in America.
