Small-Market Rhythmic CHR's

Does anybody know any good quality small-market rhythmic stations? Ones that stream but have little to no jocks and more music. I've been trying to check some out because I really enjoy listening to small-market radio stations. I found 104.5 JAMZ out of Spokane and that was alright, but I'm looking for more.

You could try KZHZ Hits 105.9 in Des Moines, hits1059.com. I think they sound really good. No jocks or commercials, at least until the sale goest through, if it does go through.

I love Hits 105.9, programs to the market very well. Has song intros. The only thing that station needs is jingles and it'd be complete. I stream it a lot.

Checking out Power now. Any more?

Power 102 in El Paso TX always sounded solid for years. I havent listen since 2002. Didn't visit El Paso either our Greyhound Bus made a stop there.

Doesn't look too bad for a CC station. Right now, my favorite is 99-3 KISS FM out of South Jersey (Atlantic City). Lots of new music and the imaging/jingles sound phenomenal. No jocks, but definitely has stopsets, I'm guessing the rhythmic format is working there because not only are the stopsets long, but they're usually #1 or #2 in the book, beating their mainstream CHR sister station, 95.1 WAYV. A little repetitive at times because they don't play many golds, but focus on currents, new music, and recurrents.

Also forgot about this one probally the only station I give Cumulus credit on in Texas

KQIZ 93.1 The Beat Amarillo, Texas.

Probally one the best sounding stations in that town. We drive through Amarillo TX if were headed to Oklahoma City or Kansas City taking the South route. Perfect mix of Hip Hop, R&B with Dance Pop. I havent listen since November 2002 not sure if Cumulus tweaked it but it started out as a CHR station before Cumulus took over it in 1998.

93.1 The Beat is an awesome station! One of the first Cumulus stations to not be Jan Jefferies controlled like Hot 102 in Lexington and The Vibe in Arkansas. It's programmed quite well to the market and takes risks and has excellent imaging. What I really am enjoying streaming is 96.9 KISS FM, competitor to The Beat in Amarillo. Has great imaging, jingles, and playlist. It keeps a heavy rhythmic lean while playing the hits.

I'm streaming Wild 101 in a new tab and so far, not too bad! Also seems to be big on new music and playing what's right for that market.

Thanks guys and keep em comin!

KVYB 103.3 The Vibe Santa Barbara, California sounds good too another Cumulus station. First it had a reggaton format pattern after KXOL in Los Angeles and KWIE is Riverside. Now its pure Rhythmic CHR. If your in Palos Verdes Hills or Estates you can hear it loud and clear along with some of the San Diego stations.

I notice a few hits on yes.com that are old songs too. Expose', Keith Sweat, Zapp. Only rival station they have in Santa Barbra is Rhythmic KCAQ, Q104.7 but those gold records work well on the westcoast stations. KGGI is one of them.

KVYB should be listed as Rhythmic AC, but you're absolutely right, it's the market. They remind me of the old MOViN 92.5 in Seattle when they first launched.

102.7 The Vibe in Fort Smith, Arkansas sounds horrible. They still play old songs like "Drop It Like Its Hot" and "Party Like A Rock Star" like they are current hits. The station pretty much just sounds like an iPod stuffed with Top 40 rhythmic hits from the past decade on random rotation.

Cumulus runs most of their stations very recurrent/gold heavy. From what I've heard of them and seen on their website The Vibe has a pretty tight playlist compared to most other rhythmic CHR's in the company. They are doing pretty well in the ratings too although their competition is that awful mainstream top 40 "KISR" which wants to be everything to all people with an 80's imaging presention. The music selection goes from the 80's to Rap. CHR should go back to MAYBE 5 years ago unless it's a massive gold for the format and in this case I would give a pass to "2Pac, Biggie, etc" on a Rhythmic.

KISR is a Ft Smith institution, and anybody who knows the Ft Smith area knows that changing it would be a disaster. In my opinion it sounds fairly decent as far as music mix most of the time, and is pretty current except for the occasional 80s or 90s song thrown in, but this isn't very often. It could definitely use updated imaging but like I said, changing it would kill the station. When I am in Ft Smith, I listen to KISR over The Vibe. The Vibe is just too heavy on the gold and is very late at getting new music. The only reason the station works is because its in a very small market. The Vibe would be a laughable excuse for a station in any decent-sized market.

Most of the Cumulus stations sound the same. Jan Jefferies has things on LOCKDOWN. Not much difference between WLTO/Lexington and KBBQ/Ft. Smith. I think the Arkansas stations have a little more PD interaction because I know Tabatha at Lexington and she makes it seem like she doesn't have ANY control over there.

Cumulus stations should be monitored like Premium Choice, but I suppose some stations may spin a song one more time a week than their sister station across the country. :D

The latest small-market station that I've fell in love with is Hot 106-1/KNEX in Laredo. www.hot1061.com
