Smart Like A FOX

KFYI continues their stranglehold on KT'R by replacing their news, traffic and weather logos with several themes on the FOX radio logo. Plus as Nurse Jeff points out, they're confirming the obvious with promos that say "..who do trust more for news? The Arizona Socialist Republic, ABC or CNN..". BRILLIANT! Especially tasty is the rhythmic bed that follows the FOX traffic logo. Compare that to the train wreck KT'R created shortly after the men in secret underwear took over Clueless On Central! Now if only KTYI could do something about that wretched digital processing that is so incompatible with the radio in our '76 Gremlin Levi's Special!

Hadn't heard or seen those changes yet. However, I was just reviewing the most recent book and KTAR still cume's 100,000 more listeners per week than FYI. FYI had to take a stance on something other than using the KTAR positioner Arizona's News Traffic Weather station...FYI adding TALK to all of that to try confuse the listener. It just sounded too clunky. It's my opinion that outside of the TSL that Rush brings, KTAR is still the market leader with news information and sports. Also, almost forgot to mention that KTAR out bills FYI by hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. It's all about the money baby!

But how much of that is Paul Harvey and sports?

Harvey's a cash cow, but he (and his listeners) won't be around forever. What's KTAR gonna do when he's gone? Of course he may still be broadcasting at 100 the way he's going.

Plus, three of our 4 pro sports franchises (the Coyotes being the exception) plus ASU football are now on 620. Sports bills well even if it doesn't get good ratings. Would our 3 motley sports-talk stations still be around if that wasn't the case?

You're right about the billing, but all 3 motley? Said it before, will say it again, 2 is enough. I'm not an alternative music fan, but what would be the risk involved in turning 1060 back into KUKQ?

There is one problem -- where would Don DeBaca go to tell people he worked for the Raiders?

Probably because nobody except maybe 3 people on this board would listen. At least KDUS still has about 20 listeners now that the Cards left.

Oh, I almost forgot. CHILL! (Somebody had to say it. :-D )

KMVP? They tend to pick up the KDUS cast-offs (The Pollyanna **oops-I-mean** Positive Side of Sports, Rock & "parter-of-the-year" Gameday, etc.).

Hmmmm...who bills more? The CC Cluster or the Men In Secret Underwear Cluster? Like ya said, it's all about the money baby!

Wait a minute there good Doctor...we were comparing KFYI and KTAR, not the clusters. But since you wish to go there-- I would venture a guess that CC's operating expenses on all of the stations is pretty significant. In terms of 'clusters,' it is just not an equal playing field. Bonneville has (3) stations...CC has (8) stations, so of course they as cluster would bill more. With KFYI's ratings, they should be the number one biller in the market, and they're not...and they have never been-I doubt they ever will be. Say what you will about KTAR. It's a CUME monster and CASH COW! In terms of the men secret underwear--at least they don't have to answer to Wall Street at the cost of the success of the stations. It's my guess that Bonneville is here to stay and will put everything it takes into getting back the market share they lost under Emmis.

"Secret underwear"? What, do you wear your underwear on the outside? I know they do some strange things out there in Buckeye, but wearing your underwear on the outside? That's just silly.

they can always flip it to the ESPN DEPORTES radio network when it launches this month....talk about targeting your audience (seeing as the towers are in Guadalupe)

Only if DeBaca can pony up the kind of money that the others pay for their air time....

Don just came thru a stroke...can you give him a break?
So he's proud that he played in the NFL...what's the big deal?! Since I'm female, I'll NEVER get to play in the NFL. What an honor that must have been...even if it was only fleeting. How many people in the world can say they've done that?
Only a handful....I'd tell everybody within earshot, too!
I've dealt with him professionally plenty of times, and although he's not legitimized in your eyes because he has to "pay" for his time, I certainly found him to be SO much more courteous, friendly and professional than 99% of the other people that I deal with that are on the payroll of most Phoenix stations.

Like I said earlier, KFYI doesn't have sports. I'll guess that XTRA bills almost as much within the CC cluster as KFYI, and they have 1/3 of the ratings and little game play-by-play (all of which is network).

Right now Bonneville owns the Phoenix sports market apart from talk shows. Even there, 620 Sportsline might do better than most of the other 3 stations' local shows, and certainly better than Sporting News Radio, ESPN, or JT the Brick, which are opposite it.

Bonneville was "here to stay" once before, when they owned KIDR 740 & KPSN/KCHT/KGLQ 96.9. They sold those stations years ago. Who's to say they won't sell KTAR/KMVP/KPKX sometime in the future?

Re: Smart Like A FOX/job fair alert

The mormon secret underwear is pretty silly, but I'm Catholic and I know Catholics that think if they wear a picture of a saint around their neck, they will be protected.

Hey, 1100 KFNX is gonna have a booth at tomorrow's Jobing.com job fair, I'm planning on seeing how well trained their recruiters are at lying!

I think that I might have already known that. My statement was passive-agressive sarcasm. I think that religion has no place on this forum either.

One thing about Bonneville, you'll never question where they stand.

Nick Lowery, who also was in the NFL, has moved his Headgames show from Tuesday evenings on 860 to weekday afternoons on 1100.
