Smooth 98.7

Okay, let me put a couple of things out there... I am not a "production guy." I am a radio professional that has 25 years of experience. I have done mornings in Charleston, WV, Oklahoma City, Huntsville, Pittsburgh, and even Akron, Ohio. I have worked at stations like WZOU in Boston and Pirate Radio in L.A. I have done Talk, Country, 80's, Top 40, or whatever format the station wanted that day. I have for the most part, loved my career. Just the people that think thay know it all can get you down. As you might have noticed, full timers are getting sacked left and right. Some of them are my friends. But they are not anxious to come to work for a station at a part time rate of pay. I know I am not the worlds greatest jock, but I do know from experience that I am not the worst. I am just happy knowing that I am live AND local. I don't know how long that it will stay that way, but I am staying for as long as I can. In this day and age that stations take talent away, let's be happy that CBS is still putting on live talent. So if God forbid there is a catastrophe, I will be here to warn people about it! And BTW MissMusicRadio, I have been live in the WSJT studio from 1-7 today. My actual break was, " I just saw this on the internet..." not "This just in..."
I have given you my name and my cirriculum vitae. Let's see if you will be brave enough to give yours!

Josh Knauer

I am not in radio and my name would mean nothing to any of you. Seriously------I am not in your industry ever. Just a fan who gets carried away. I know that there were certain folks that used aliases to post here who are well known. I'm not. Actually giving out my name would violate my "witness protection' contract. If you go through the WTAN logs for the years 2003-2008 you might find an interview I did with Frank Kopszynski. Does that help? Seriously-------I am only a fan. My ciriculum is in government work of no particular connection to radio. I wanted to be in radio ,but I flunked the voice test. I would have wanted to be the 7-11 DJ on WMCA, but that was overreaching. BMR got hired. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about, but that should prove I AM NOT IN RADIO AND NEVER WAS!

I give CBS all the credit for keeping the faith with WCBS,KRTH,WOMC, and Q105. When "Jack' failed in NYC, CBS was smart enough to hire warm bodies and bring back the greatness. It seems lately I've been offending people. I'm sorry and will keep my criticism for the poor guy who does overnights on WXGL. He is clueless. On that note, I remember Glenn Beck overnights on WPGC in DC circa 1983.

What I would like is for WSJT to be live 24/7. It's the type of music to keep one cozy over-night and it needs the warm dulcet tones of a WNEW AM type of guy to keep us (as one poster called me)' lonely old ladies without a life' company. Short of that, there is WUSF.

Well at least MS Music Radio you are nice enough to explain to us fragile egos where you're coming from.
I appreciate that. Many people wouldn't have the guts.

I think I can speak for us all that we are lucky to have a job.  We don't make the decisions at the stations, we just do what we are told so we can continue to have food, clothing and shelter.

I was lucky enough to get offered my job back, although I am on part-time status.  Many former full-timers with heavy credentials may still be in denial as to their employability (think they can still get primo gigs).  I, for one, am not too proud to take a part time gig, I got a kid in college.  Every little bit helps.

Thanks. However, since I was asked about my resume, I'll give you'll this. I gave the City of Richmond Va. 30 years as a Family and Children's Caseworker. I took an early retirement package at age 55. If you didn't take it, the powers would rummage around in your caseloads going back as far as needed to find a reason to fire you. This was not personal, but just budget driven. In 2003 I went to work on a five year grant funded by SAMHSA in St.Pete. It ended in 2008. I was part-time for a few months and then let go. No benefits from the second job. I am now unemployed and living in Tampa on Social Security listening to old WMCA airchexx and dreamming of the "glory days.' That is about it. I do have grandkids to keep me company

If you read the NooYawk Board, they are giving WCBS a good raking and I really don't see what they want. Ron Lundy is gone and Dan Ingram is retired. WABC is also gone. WCBS is the best there is.

And sorry you are part-time. There was only AM in 1965-66, but it seems if air talent was let go in one place, somebody else picked them up. When WRBQ let a bunch go in 2008, even though Cox has loads of space on 7 stations, they took none of them. Only Marvin Boone got a DJ gig back and it is on a real rimshot.

WRBQ is our sister station. Marvin was just the first of many of us to "get it" since then. This has happened everywhere..not just our market..all over the world in radio. There simply isn't anywhere to go for a lot of us. Stations have cut back just like any other business. People are doing the job that 6 used to do!
Corporations have shareholders to answer to, and most of the major market radio stations are owned by them.
It's a tough biz now. I wouldn't want to be a kid starting out in the business at this point in radio's evolution.

When I was a teeny-bopper, there was no MTV,VH-1,cable,the Internet, Facebook, YouTube, cell phones, or twitter-------just radio and TV. the "kids' were a community because we all listened to the same jocks. It might be the KHJ Boss Jocks or the WHK Good Guys. You might find a fave like Jim Stagg in Cleveland and then Chicago. This is why I'm such a fan, groupie, and grouchy AARPtype critic.

Sorry to post twice. If I tried to get back into case work in Tampa Bay, I'd find many of the agencies around in 2002 have disappeared or just shrunk.

Where did you work in Pittsburgh?

Parttimer, I used to do mornings on 100.7 The Point with my show partner Bob Campbell. I believe it is now "Star 100.7" We had our studios on the top of Mt. Washington, but now they have moved to a business park in Greentree.

First, it's great to have you on the board, I lurk from time to time, have been listening to you online for years (and quit streaming WSJT during your thankfully temporary absence). I gotta say that I don't like the way the business has changed (even though I don't work in it) because it seems like you all had more fun in the old days.

In any event, it's great that you're back on WSJT and I'll keep streaming it here in Memphis for a while longer.

I really think that the new medium of Internet Radio will be the re-birth of jobs, careers, and new talent in the next five years. Many of us are just addicted to towers with lights, and transmitters. Those who can holdon and stay afloat (even doing full time work for part time pay) will soon reap the benifits from staying active in our industry. RFemember how much easier it is to get a job if we have a job...We are in a real transition period, but listeners will return with a renewed interest in people-driven radio, just not quite lite terrestrial radio. Sure enough it's not a great time to be in "regular radio" because of the massive over buying, and under funding of corporate broadcasting..And sure, right now is a bad time to get into Internet Radio because of the various royalties, and restrictions, but as more and more people find Internet Radio as a viable and far more compellling medium we'll see Alicia, and Josh and Marvin, and others rebound into a new style of broadcasting. I have heard these people and they ARE major market talent..Rigger is right, drive around LA for a day and listen around..Yeeesh.

I had mentioned an article I saw sometime ealier this year pointing out that a 17 year old young man running a "radio station" out of his bedroom on ShoutCast..actually had MORE listeners than 3 Dallas Fort Worth terrestrial stations combined! It's a matter of time, and a matter of "someone" coming up with a business model that will be able to co-op all of these little Internet stations into a sellable commodity..Imagine going to each of the Live 365 stations and offering to pay for thier streaming fees, and a few bucks a month extra for two minutes an hour or each of thier stations. If there are only 1500 viable on-line radio stations, and they are on 12 hours a day..that's 36000 one minute avails a DAY! How much do you think "someone" could go to Coca Cola or Walmart and sell a monthly package of 36 thousand spots a day could get? Frank? Help me out on this. It "could" be the next Google..think about it.

I still like "Smooth 98.7" It plays smooth and relaxing easy favorites to make my day go by faster. And Josh and Alicia are just terrific! Hold on guys..there's better days ahead.

If the 17 year old succeeds, Cox will buy his house ,evict him, and robojock his computer, or CC will move Elvis Duran and Seacrest into the guest rooms, or CBS lets him keep his show, but cuts his access to half his freezer.

Now, that is funny.
You forgot Citadel. They change the format in favor of True Oldies and move Scott Shannon into the 17 year old's bedroom, while moving the 17 year old to NYC to program WPLJ.

Those witches..

I think that WSJT really sounds better all nitpicking aside. I like the music selection and local people . They just need a new jingle package and a 7-12 personality.

Wow, Jeff. Even at a "dollar a holler" that's 36 grand a day!

With all the modifications to the interference rules that seem to be making room for the HDs, it appears a power increase could be justified for 98.7 main.

Reception can be difficult in Temple Terrace and bad even in a car in Brandon. On another note, CBS has an Adult Urban in W.Palm Beach called B106.3. Could WSJT be moving this way? Just discoverd B106.3 and I like the music
