First off, Smooth Jazz and Smooth A/C should not be mentioned in the same breath as formats. They are distinctly different, and are further distancing themselves from each other with each passing day. As several informed, veteran contributors to the Smooth Jazz forum have noted before, a good number of the stations you listed are either providing canned, unimaginative BA-fed programming, or playlists that are comprised of fewer than 50% contemporary instrumentals, if that, per hour. Those that are locally programmed from your list, especially 105.9 in Coos Bay and 92.7 in Harrisburg, are as close to the original Smooth Jazz presentation of any of those stations listed, IMO. Regretfully, even KIFM is playing a higher percentage of vocals for my taste these days.

One glaring omission from this list, perhaps not by coincidence, is a non-comm---KSBR-FM (Saddleback College, Mission Viejo, CA). Those outlets that are NOT bound to pressure from consultants, advertisers, and others who represent the corporate radio machine to shrink playlists and spin overplayed familiar cuts offer the most viable alternatives for true fans of contemporary jazz music.
 
WSJT and The Wave are no longer playing enough instrumentals to be considered in the format. Jhani Kaye and crew, who basically flipped the wave, consult WSJT now.

The River is about 60% pop vocals,
several of these are full time BA affiliates. Kinda sad (lol) to see that the SJ network that was poised to take over the world ("an affiliate in every market" were the words they used at launch) is now relegated to a cluster of mostly small markets.

WLOQ in Orlando is still non-corporate but sounds like a BA station. They're still here. The Gainesville station is actually not BA, they sound "old" especially for a market full of students and faculty but they do play real smooth jazz.

It is kinda sad, Cat. :D By the way, what ever happened to the Chillout Network, err I mean Cookout, err I mean, what did those geniuses end up calling that so called, game-changing format??? Obviously it was a very forgettable thread for me. ;D

::) ;D LOL. I was wondering the same thing a couple of days ago. The only station I know of is KOCD 103.7 in Oklahoma City.

Another great smooth jazz station is WVSU on the campus of Samford University. in Birmingham. I listen from time to time.

I don't see KRVR, WJZA, KMGQ, KMYT, or KJJZ lasting much longer. They could be gone by the end of the summer in my opinion. After that I think a lot of the smaller stations like you all have mentioned will be fine such as WSJW, WXJZ, KYSJ, and KWJZ.
 
WSBZ in Destin/Ft. Walton Beach is still doing it's thang. The Reno station has been gone for sometime now. BA's Chill network change it's name to the Bright network (I just can't escape the irony of that move) and it's only on the one station in outside of Oklahoma City.
 
Thanks for reminding me, Bill! No wonder I had a hard time recalling the new and improved, expertly-consulted and marketed name for the format. :D

Despite being BA-fed, WQJZ in Ocean Pines, MD, once a flagship station for the old Jones Radio Network and formerly my favorite Smooth Jazz station of all time, may hang on by a thread because the demographics and lifestyle of the area are conducive for the format (small market resort area with a high percentage of retirees who have been loyal to the station for 13+ years running now). Their ratings have always been low, but steady nonetheless. However, with 96 Rock recently flipping to an all sports format, it will be interesting to see what Delmarva Broadcasting does with WQJZ in the near future.
 
I was under the impression Gainesville, FL was BA, so I never looked or cared about them much, but looking at their playlist, it's actually not bad. Is it locally programmed? It looks like roughly 2 instrumentals per vocal which is rare these days.

As for your list, I've talked about them in the past, but I'd like to mention them again. Kutztown University in rural Pennsylvania has a small station who's signals just cover the campus, but they do a good job of marketing themself to the town through cable radio, web radio, and an I-Phone application, and even were one of the sponsors of Berks Jazz Fest this past year which is pretty good for such a tiny station. They are jazz part-time when no student shows are on-air, which during the summer is quite a bit. The guy who programs the station has quite an "interesting" taste for the format with tons of unknown artists along with the mainstream smooth jazz artists and a sprinkling of gold soft AC (not the AC that most smooth jazz stations play). They're playing Kenny Rogers right now (LOL ... I guess that's the soft AC gold sprinkling I just spoke of) after having recently played Eric Marienthal and now some jazz artist I never heard of named Daniel Deaguero. As for WQJZ, I agree AC. They were my favorite station on-line when they were Jones. And with a very good radio like a Grundig, I could pick them up vacationing in Cape May, New Jersey, after Cape May's own Jones affiliate shut down in the early 2000's. For such a tiny station, they sure have been loyal to the format through the change from Jones to BA, dating back as far as about 1997 I believe. We'll see how long it lasts.

I believe that CJGV, (smooth) KMGK, (sports) and WRPO (oldies) have all flipped to another format. Correct me, if I'm wrong anyone. :-\

WSBZ is okay station, it's still a BA station though. But I listen from time to time along with KUJJ, KYOT, WKYL, and KJZS. Mainly for the local spots. :eek:
 
Sorry about the double post everyone. WJZL was sold not long ago, don't know if the new owners will continue with the smooth jazz format or not. Just putting that out there. ::)
 
WSBZ is BA network, something they once said they would never do. The Gainesville station seems to be locally programmed, 2 guys I used to work with work there (Quincy and Steve Dina) checking in right now it looks like BA music except for I Want To Be Your Man by Roger (WTEff....) The Groove has about a 200 song playlist and although they say they are innovative they still use a lot of old timey liners (relax..etc) and play mostly the slow, riffy BA sounding SJ..although mostly by indie artists who imitate that sound rather than the big name guys.
 
CIWV-FM "Wave 94-7" (Hamilton/Toronto, Canada) may be listed as "Smooth AC", but I think we should all give owners Mary & Doug Kirk a lot of credit for doing everything they can to keep SMOOTH JAZZ going strong; they've been hosting an annual 'Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards', which has drawn well-earned international acclaim, since 2004. Mary selects the artists & titles herself out of a deep love & passion for Smooth Jazz & what I will call "Smooth Vocals" -- this is one of, if not THE only, commercial radio stations in North America where you'll hear artists like Basia, Swing Out Sister, and Slim Man (CIWV is playing recently released tracks from all three), among others; Mary has also been (pardon the pun) "instrumental" in helping to launch & shape the careers of some very talented Canadian Smooth Jazz artists (many if not all of whom are worthy of international acclaim), including Michael Buble, Carol Welsman, Julie Crochetiere, Jesse Cook, Sophie Milman, Alfie Zappacosta, Molly Johnson, Brian Hughes -- the list goes on.

If you haven't listened to CIWV lately (or ever), you really should give it a listen. Of the remaining commercial, terrestrial Smooth Jazz radio stations anywhere, this is the one I believe to be the best, by far.

I'll agree CIWV is pretty good.

Although I've not seen anything mentioned here about WEIB 106.3 Northampton (Greenfield) MA. They fall somewhere within the "cool jazz" smooth FM genre, and as they say... "with a touch of soul" too.

WEIB has a very limited signal locally.
