Smooth Jazz is Back in Chicago!

DD...

Thanks for your feedback...guess the proof will be in the pudding. My goal is to build a great SJ station custom made for Chicago. So far the fact that we are keeping this format alive has been very positive. Now...we have work to do...and yes I welcome and greatly encourage input from Chicago.

Curious response from you Pat, since I never provided any feedback on your station. ??? ::)

Your failure to answer my simple, direct question does, however, speak volumes. ;)

WLFM is owned by Venture Technologies Group....we are a small independent broadcast company. To get the ball rolling we are carrying the SJ Network. Sorry, nothing very sinister here.

I "don't have a dog in this fight". I don't particularly like the format, and its of no consequence to me if the format is a smashing success, dismal failure, or something in between. They can keep Lewis (a true class act) or bring back a new Daddy-O Dayley if they want. I personally won't listen.

But I also think the new venture should be given a chance to fully develop before we start bashing it. C'mon!!!

Thanks all for the feedback....this is day one of 87.7 Smooth Jazz.....tell me what YOU would to like to see and hear in a well programed Chicago Smooth Jazz station. Don't just knock the SJ Network....give me actionable and specific suggestions. We will listen....

Here's my suggestion: Bring back the country music! I was starting to enjoy your station, and I was glad to hear that the Dance format was not going to happen, but then you killed the country music on your station after your learned that Clear Channel flipped WNUA from SJ to Spanish. Why?

What's the big deal about Smooth Jazz? The format should have died a long time ago! If somebody wants to hear SJ so badly, they can buy an HD radio, hook up an antenna and listen to WNUA-HD2. I am very disappointed in your decision. I hope your station fails!

When WNUA signed of as Smooth Jazz they had almost 1,100,000 listeners. There are a lot of people who like format...certainly enough to make it part of the overall radio mix in Chicago. Cyberdad said it best..."I also think the new venture should be given a chance to fully develop before we start bashing it. C'mon!!!"

We are David vs Goliath...keep the cards and letters coming...I'm listening...

It's all about the money. Unfortunately the listeners don't matter.

My apologies if my comments were taken the wrong way...I think I speak on behalf of other dedicated contemporay smooth jazz loyalists here on this board (and beyond) when say that your company having no managerial/ownership affiliation with Kepler's BA is a very good thing...as you have probably surmised on your own, Kepler/BA are not held in high regard here, as most feel BA did significant damage both to the short and long-term health and viability of the format. You and your station will likely be best served by distancing yourself as far away from Keplers programming as possible going forward.

Best of luck with your venture, and thanks for keeping terrestrial Smooth Jazz alive in The Windy City.

The Smooth Jazz format as was played by WNUA was a watered down, top 40-ish, playing it safe, form of elevator music. In some ways it became the Beautiful Music of the 90's.

To repeat the same music rotation as WNUA had may make sense at first, to attract their loyal listeners, but at some point there needs to be an injection of a bit more life.

It wouldn't hurt to do some form of advertising...few people outside of this board know of the WLFM station

Thanks DD....please listen objectively and give me your thoughts. Keep in mind that programming this station is a balancing act between airing the "cool/hip" music to draw in people like you and playing the familiar vocals/covers that give us some mass appeal without turning you off. Actually the SJ Network music sounded a bit better than I expected....needs some work. So far, response from the masses has been good....they're just glad that the format didn't completely go away. Let's stay in touch....winning over people who share your sense and passion of SJ will be important to our success.

Hey dd92251...just saw your blog...advertising will come...keep the cards and letters coming.

Pat - Thanks for keeping the smooth jazz format alive. Any chance of improving signal quality? WLFM is not always coming through as clearly in Northwest Indiana as the other Chicago stations.

I hate to spoil your fun, but…

Doesn’t WLFM-LP have a lease with Mega Media Group to go all dance as “Pulse 87” come sometime in June? Wasn’t this lease with Venture (Venture does own this station) supposed to include a station in LA and WLFM-LP? If that’s the case, you can say Ba-bye to Smooth Jazz again next month. Hopefully, though, I’m just imagining things…

If anyone can make it work, it's Pat. He has a long history with WNUA and one that far surpasses what they ended up as---basically an automated radio statiob under Clear Channel. As far as the signal goes, it is pretty good out into the northwest suburbs. The TV (analog) doesn't really matter much, I assume. Good luck to The L!

I read somewhere today that there may be a point in time that the FCC requires even LPTV stations to cease Analog transmission and transition to Digital. If that comes to be then WLFM may have a problem.
Has anyone else heard this ?

If this is the same Pat Kelley I know... Hello! (Dave Pardo, here...) Wanted to say thanks for keeping the format in Chicago. I've made sure to pass the word along to my contacts and ask them to tune in. As you know, I'm familiar with SJ Network's programming, which is why things sound so familiar. I'm sure we'll hear improvements. I'm happy to help work to get the format back towards the center of the dial. ...so, I'll keep listening and voice my opinions. The best of luck on things! Take care. - Dave Pardo (Smooth Jazzer in Chicago 1993-2000)

An FM DXer is hearing the station well in Charleston,IL...he wonders what's on the video portion?
