Smooth Jazz is Back in Chicago!

There is a stream now on the website but it's the Your Smooth Jazz network stream. When is there an own stream available?

Yep...it's the same Pat Kelley...I was there when we packed 60,000 into Petrillo Band shell for Herb Albert and George Bensen...attended all the Koz holiday shows.....how can anyone forget all the great summer nights at Navy Pier?....etc etc etc. Thanks for spreading the word everyone. Keep the feedback coming...go to wlfm877.com and send us an email.

Best of luck, Pat--I still believe that this can be a vibrant format, as long as it is geared to what makes Chicago unique. I'd like to think that a format with a million listeners in a top five market is commercially viable, and I hope you pull it off.

An FM DXer is hearing the station well in Charleston,IL...he wonders what's on the video portion?

Consistently? Or is this tropo? It is 160 miles from Charleston to Chicago "as the crow flies"
That DXer must have a great setup, after all it's 3kW.

I would love to have the Sounds of Brazil on Saturday or Sunday evening again. And how about sponsoring some more summer concerts?

Seems consistent. And yep, he's got an APS-13 yagi at 50' with the original AJ-15 Heath tuner he built in high school in the late 60's or early 70's. He's a champion FM & TV DXer.

He heard it at 5AM this morning with rain & band conditions down. He's frustrated by the seeming fact that it gives no Legal ID at the top of the hour-maybe they can get that fixed soon. Or maybe the legal ID is on the video portion. Hopefully someone here knows what is showing on the video side?? Listen to the reception at 5AM today at www.downloads.bobandtanya.com . I'll leave this link here for a few days.

I asked how well it gets in compared to the other Chicago stations...here's the reply :

"It gets in as good as any south suburban class A and 75% as good as stuff on the Sears". He's never seen a VHF LP get out like this.

Has anyone attempted to measure the precise frequency of WLFM-LP? Couldn't they request a frequency offset from the FCC so that they are really transmitting on 87.70 and not 87.75? (I wonder if the station is aware of this and already transmitting on 87.70 MHz)
That way WLFM could come in a lot clearer on some digital tuners - 50 kHz could make a difference on some radios...

This is a stupid radio station who does not get back to people. I asked them twice about the live stream and they ignored my emails. So obviously they aren't going to stream. I don't like stations that don't get back to people with simple questions like that. Another dumb radio station out of my area that flipped that I'd like to hear but can't. There isn't even any phone number for that station and their broadcast company in LA just has an automated system where you can't even speak to a live, human being. I wanted an aircheck!

Thanks for reaching out....our #1 goal last week was to simply get the station on the air at 87.7FM via the feed from the SJ Network...which we did and wasn't as easy as flipping a switch.

While musicly the SJN feed is a bit different...the jingles and the use of our 20+ year voice are just about the same. It's a true story that we...all of Chicago that is....built and defined this format and because of its' success it was the model BA used to create and execute the national Smooth Jazz format. A few years back my Sister (A++ SJ fan) was visiting a friend of hers and called me in a frantic to say that she was listening to the local SJ station and that someone had stolen NUA and we should sue!

Let's do it again fans....keep the actionable feedback coming....this is for real...

Hi Pat, you seem to be involved in 87.7 so maybe you can answer a couple of questions:

1) When will legal ID's be forthcoming? That is certainly "actionable".

2) What is showing on the video portion? A wise choice might be non-stop ads for the audio portion.

Best wishes on this bold move...I wish you the very best!

Hi, again, Mr. Kelley. I hear Rick O'Dell and Danae Alexander are back on the air over at ChitownSmoothJazz.com. I'd like to hear their streams at 87.7 (in the schedule)as well, if that is possible. :D :D :D :D

Great idea! Sounds of Brazil with Scott Adams was a good show! And sponsoring concerts would def get the balls rolling once more.

Also, what about Musical Starstreams? :D

Good luck, Pat. I left KHJZ 95.7 The Wave here in Houston about a year before it's demise. I saw the end coming. I knew it was going to happen; therefore I jumped into a fulltime position at KNTH/KKHT. I was lucky considering how many radio folks are out of work. In my 35 plus years in radio, spending most of it in country music, the nest time I've had was playing smooth jazz.

All the best to ya. I am looking forward to listening to the stream when you get everything set.

How about simulcasting the concerts on the video portion of Channel 6? That would be way cool...Also please bring back Musical Starstreams and Sounds of Brazil. How about RDS/RBDS to identify the station? Any chance 87.7 can get the WNUA call letters? BTW 87.7 is blasting in great into the Crystal Lake and Barrington areas with only some interference from WITI-TV in Milwaukee - looking forward to it signing off for good June 11, so we can get a clear signal in the North and Northwest suburbs!

Thanks for reaching out Stormy01....interesting ideas. It's an exciting time for Smooth Jazz...much to come...keep the ideas coming. And, yes, effective 6/12 the signal will be full strength...appreciate you posting that on the blog.

There is no Channel 6 anywhere near Chicago after June 12, so the WLFM-LP signal should be made omnidirectional then.
That would improve coverage to the North and Northwest of Chicago.

Will it be omni-directional after June 12? And when will top of the hour ID's begin (if they haven't already)? Hard to get great ratings if you don't get those call letters out!

Let's hope they don't delay that digital TV date again.

Did I read correctly somewhere on the web that Smooth Jazz 87.7 will be part of the Arbitron ratings? If so, Bob is right.
Also - the wlfm877.com website needs to be more like this one: http://www.smoothjazz1480.com/ Now that is a cool website!

I like especially the part of the main page on smoothjazz1480.com that shows what is playing on air/what has played - that helps CD/Download sales - and so we know who the artists are that we are hearing!
