Snoop Dogg on Magic 98.3!

nd2023

Banned
Just tuned past 98.3 and I heard Katy Perry - California Girls, including the Snoop Dogg rap. And I stuck around for an ID so it definitely was not e-skip (there was skip earlier today to the midwest).

Might as well call it Magic 98.3, Jersey's Wannabe Hit Music Station. Congratulations, you've alienated your audience as shown by the declining ratings. The Beach Boys version of California Girls would fit better on an AC station.

Gee, I wonder if that song would fit in with the rest of "that garbage" on Fresh 102.7...

Nick, you do realize 98.3 is operated by the same company as Wild (Atlantic Broadcasting.). JVC doesnt own wild 100%.

I love the Katy Perry song. But lyrically "Sex On The Beach" doesn't cut it for me on a song played by an A/C radio station.
It will probably be the biggestr song of the summer at CHR & Hot A/C.

I definately do not believe Magic 98.3 should be playing this song

Funny thing....WJLK is playing the edited version without the Snoop Dog rap in it, yet both WMGQ & WJRZ are playing it WITH Snoop, including "all that ass hangin' out." Personally, I LIKE the song with the rap in it...but again, I'm not the usual soccer mom with kids in the car. Nor am I a A/C station slamming it next to REO Speedwagon (WJRZ), or sandwiching it in-between "Little Red Corvette" and "Jessie's Girl" (WMGQ).

And Yes.net has "California Gurls" listed as WWFS's #4 song, and it's #9 on WPLJ. Lite doesn't have it listed as a top song, so I don't believe they are playing it.

MGQ needs to decide if they are a AC, or a Hot AC/Adult CHR. Can't be everything to everyone, else you just end up making NOBODY happy with what you are playing. Hell, I don't know why Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby" is still in rotation. Dave Kelly must like that one...

Magic 98.3 is heading in the direction of becoming a musical trainwreck like Fresh 102.7. No, the soccer moms don't want their preteen kids to hear Katy Perry - California Girls!

I wouldn't call Fresh a trainwreck. Their playlist is more clearly focused on younger-skewing music, and they have effective branding to back it up. Magic is all over the place musically, and the "soft rock" positioner doesn't fit at all with a lot of what they're playing.

Magic 98.3, WMGQ new Brunswick, is owned by Greater Media, not Atlantic Broadcasting.

I did re-read. I thought he was referring to WTKU 98.3 down there playing Snoop Dogg, I just haven't had the time to correct myself.

While DXing tonight I hear Sexy Back on 98.3. Since there were 4 stations fighting on 98.3, I wait for an ID even though I assume I'm in for another shocking song Magic shouldn't be playing. Lo and behold, it's Magic. I know it's 2 AM and only night owls and radio geeks like me are up that late, but still.

At that same time: K-Joy 98.3 was playing Hot N Cold, Kool 98.3 was playing commercials, and Star 98.3 (WSMD/Mechanicsville, MD) was playing Nickelback - Someday

Can't wait to see WMGQ's ratings go down next month.

I fondly remember the days when AC and Rhythmic CHR didn't share any of their songs.

When I punched up WMGQ in the 4 AM hour, they were playing "California Gurls" - but it was the no rap version! Maybe someone is paying attention....

Still don't think the song belongs on the station. "Sex On The Beach" line is very troublesome on an A/C radio station.

"Mom, why do grown ups have sex on the beach"

After mom answers that question, mom removes 98.3 from her presets!

One more station has added "California Gurls" to its playlist - thaats right, 106.7 Lite FM! Heard it in the 6AM hour...no Snoop, of course.

The Spring Mon/Oc book should be interesting...

I tuned past 98.3 tonight and heard the Beach Boys version of California Girls. Unfortunately, it was Kool 98.3.

I looked at Magic 98.3's last songs played. 14% of the songs would make me tune out, if I was in the mood for AC. Compare that to 3% of the songs WEBE 108 plays would make me tune out. 29% of the songs Fresh 102.7 plays would make me tune out. 16% of Lite FM's songs would make me tune out. 4% of KUDL 98.1's (Kansas City) music would make me tune out. And finally, 1% of The Breeze's songs would make me tune out.

And if you're not in the target demo, it doesn't matter in the end.

Dont mean to hijack this thread but if you thought Snoop Dogg on Magic was a shock, Jay Z was heard on SoJo. Times have changed for the AC stations unfortunately.

Hot AC now means Adult CHR...and SoJo has always been very "hot" to my ears. Times have changed - and for stations to stay within their target demo, they have to evolve - no radio station can live in a vacuum. I love oldies, but I know that commercial stations like CBS-FM won't make money playing "I Wonder Why" or "Be My Baby" in heavy rotation. Magic may or may not be doing too shabby in their target demo, but if the overall numbers are an indicator, #10 in your own market 6+ is something to worry about.

AC's need to play the crossover hits from Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Micheal Buble, Sara Bariellis, and others that can fit with the "gold" from the 80's & 90's (and 70's if you want to go back that far). Playing the Black Eyed Peas, GaGa, Katy Perry or Ke$ha? Do a music test on the songs that you want to throw in (Tik Tok, California Gurls, I Gotta Feeling) and see what comes back. But that costs money, and we all know how tight the purse strings are lately.

One thing to learn from George Steinbrenner is that to win it takes allot of investing in your franchise. I'm a Red Sox fan, but George didn't get those 7 World Series rings by being cheap and not investing in great players or his franchise. Spending money on marketing and research is especially important when your have strong competition, and GM would be wise to invest in some research to get the station in a better position.
