Snow!

I meant to say this last week.

On Inauguration Day I just had to listen to Rush imbaugh.

Among the problems: dead air almost every time they switched from Rush to news or commercials or whatever else they were doing locally, or from news back to Rush. I even heard beeping.

And, with the sun out and what little snow there was almost melting and the roads clear, a forecast for 3 to 6 inches just kept getting repeated.

Today, the forecast sounds similar to two weeks ago. I'm relying on the man on my second favorite pop radio station. He says it might snow tonight if the rain stays around long enough, but he's not talking about accumulation.

And while this isn't about radio, the jerk on Channel 9 who does weekends just said "From 60s to snow" as he did a station ID. He's a jerk anyway. And he never tells you what the low and high were. How can a TV weather report at 6 or 11 not tell you these things? These meteorologists act like you know what already happened. Excuse me? Nobody told ME. How do I know what happened? That's why I watch the news.

Reg on Fox 18 usually does this. Derek thinks he can get away with not doing it when he has something else to say, like it's optional or something.

Terri Bennett on Channel 36 was pretty good too. Brad Panovich couldn't care less so I no longer acknowledge the existence of Channel 36 News.

Bring back Terri Bennett. She is the best since Clyde McClain.

She is very good, seems to be doing great with her website now too, and makes frequent appearances on the Larson Show and the official meteorologist of the "Professional Radio Broadcast."

She's got a great presence, a great personality, sense of humor and knows her job well.

36 just keeps on looking more and more rinky dink these days, and still no Hi Def local news, the only one left. If they want to compete, they need to get with the plan or let someone else run the show and just be an also ran forever.

10,000 people were without power in one county. In that county is the station I listen to at home more than any other. I pick up another station in the car. The owner of the station had periodic updates. The last time he was on Duke said 160,000 were without power. The man told about some closings and had a suggestion about where to go if you were without power.

Digital TV is not here yet. But if it had been, I bet people would have gotten a rude awakening. This far from the city, even if the TV works, you need electricity for an antenna or for cable or a dish. I have heard battery TVs are not capable of being upgraded to digital unless they were made digital.

The value of radio. Mostly, the station has just played good music, which is why I was listening. That and Paul Harvey tributes. :(

I have power, and there was only a little snow here, but it was just enough to close everything. And I had some trouble getting my car out. Weird how the radio would flip from one country legends station to another as I moved ever so slowly. I've now forgotten which two legendary songs I was hearing at once.

Digital TV is already here and it has been here for a few years. The event that is now scheduled for June 12th is that the rest of full power analog stations sign off (several stations will then offer messages for about a month after the shutdown. Most stations have simply been airing over a digital and a analog transmitter. So far channels 14 & 64 in Charlotte has given up on analog. I went all digital several months ago.

The issue with almost all portable tv's is that a portable battery powered converter needs to be used (I don't think one exists yet but could be wrong).

Rick...

I believe WTVI turned off channel 42 as well...

There are battery operated ATSC Portable TVs available. They are pricey and some are said to not work well. You can also purchase an ATSC tuner for your laptop that connects via USB.

I sat next to Sonia Gant on a flight back from Newark a few months ago. She was telling me that it may be some time before they upgraded to HD for their news. She said it would cost millions to upgrade their tape chain which is not old enough to justify replacement. Notice WBTV and WCCB have not updated their field editors either. They don't shoot on tape anymore. The media cards they shoot on are very expensive. I understand WSOC is shooting 16:9 SD because the cards they use can only record around a minute of HD.

Fact of the matter it does not make economic sense to upgrade to HD unless the equipment is ready to be replaced. I bet none of the stations have made on extra dollar based on being HD...

Mistake in terminology.

I guess I should have said digital-only TV.

Even this past week one could turn to analog TV. What I meant was that this will soon be impossible.

A battery powered TV won't do you much good if the antenna isn't powered. But if you're close to the tower it might still work.
