SO IT'S OLDIES 93

It looks like Entercom will flip 93.1 but the question is to what? Stunting started this morning at 9:00 and apparently will end Thursday Afternoon. I was told the sales staff is calling clients today. Whatever the new format is I think the station will face an uphill battle and I hope the folks at the home office have some deep pockets. It's a shame to see a viable format dropped in a market this size, I have to believe there is a lot of life left in the Oldies format. I hate to say it but it looks like some more good radio prople will end up on the beach.

Now if I was Gig Hilton, I'd have Charlie Van Dyke recording my new sweepers about right now...but I'm not, so this was just another waste of valuable webspace...

Yep on the first count.
Long time no see Gary.

Sorry to see Oldies 93 go. Sad. An email sent to clients posted elsewhere on this same site says, "it is time to Move On." That points to the "MOVIN'" format or it could be misdirection. Maybe they'll do every bit as well as 96.1 did in Charlotte. What a flash in the pan "The Beat" turned out to be.

Dave, GOOD to hear from ya! I just heard an interesting theory- that this is little more than a HUGE publicity stunt, the only thing they're really gonna do is drop the "oldies93" moniker, and the music mix is gonna stay basically the same under new imaging, the reasoning being that baby boomers dislike being referred to as oldies listeners...that would suit my tastes very well as 93.1 is\was one of my fav stations.

THAT was what my first gut instinct told me. They recently hired a new highly respected PD who specializes exclusively in oldies. However, they wouldn't be emailing and phoning clients for something that minor...well usually they wouldn't. At any rate, I'm hoping it is all just a stunt. The "MOVIN'" format would erode the audience at the cluster's number 1 rated Urban station, so it really wouldn't make any sense to do that. But who says modern corporate radio makes sense?

Your comments about Magic 96\ the Beat being flash in the pan appear to have some creedence- I note they are trending rapidly downward...I remember saying myself that format would be easy to counterprogram.

Yes I was referring to the downward spiral in the trends. It does appear to be in real trouble. They are now just about where Magic was just one year before it got whacked.

Regards,
Brother Dave

In Charlotte when Magic 96 switched, Mix 106 took off in the ratings.

If WIST could improve its signal (by adding WAAA again, this time at full power), there would never be a better time to return to standards.

Not oldies, though! I don't like oldies.

hmm that wouldn't surprise me.  Remember a few years back when Jamz stunted their "last 3 songs", played a few mexican songs, and then came back on to reveal it was all a big hoax.  They're both Entercom so that's a possibility.  I don't see why Oldies wouldn't be doing great.  But then again, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination

I heard the weird computer voice quote lyrics from Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places". I don't have my own computer and I plan to watch lots of TV tonight, but I'm sure others can provide more information.

Sounds like country.

Just for the record, Pat Garrett was brought in to do mid-days and be assistant PD. Randy Bliss is still very much the PD at Oldies 93 or WMQX. I was told all of the air talent was sent home today just before nine and none of them have any idea of what is going on but most expect to be out of work soon. I am also told the new format will be nothing new for Triad Radio. For some reason I keep wondering how Randy Bliss and Brent Millar will look in cowboy hats.

I'm sticking to my theory that they're "re-imaging" the station. They'll probably change promos and other things about the sound, then market it with a new "cool" name. The "Oldies" moniker doesn't set well with the Baby Boomers who don't want to get old. Don't think it will be Country (although it could be that as payback to CC for changing to Urban). Definitely don't think it will be AC as someone stated earlier. WMAG is SO entrenched that I think they're untouchable. Their listeners have been with them for years. However, a newly re-worked 93.1 could put a dent in WMAG AND steal enough thunder to put a crimp in their "Christmas" this year. I just know that they've recently reworked the morning show, adding Leanne Petty, etc., and I don't think they'll just fire all those people (sounds naive, doesn't it?). Guess we'll find out on Thursday, but I'm in the "New Moniker - Re-Imaging" camp.

Airstaff comes back just before three on Thursday, ostensibly so that no news of what is to come can be leaked to the mkt.

Inside sources say this is a format "change", not a nudge or a fresh coat of paint.

The recorded electronic voice is creepy.

How many country stations does Entercom have nationally? I think WSSL in Gvl.-Spartanburg is theirs...

oh, and props 2 n_guy for bird-dogging this 1. the next time someone tells u that message boards are bs, remind them that this one knew when no one else did.

No, WSSL in Greenville is CC. WHSL (now 100.3 The Buzzard), was patterned after WSSL "Whistle". Definitely Clear Channel.

Oh yeah - and big KUDOS to N_Guy. Great Job! A man in the know.

I can't believe they'd do the Movin format. The demo for Movin is Women 25-44. That would canibalize their Urban station and it would also canibalize Simon. Why would they do that?

It's happening all over.

Where does/did WPBG broadcast from?
And...not to start any rumour, but does Clearchannel own the rights to the name drive, or can Entercom use it?

http://www.bigoldies933.com/

I doubt it; there's a station in Fayetteville called "96.5 The Drive"--- which, coincidentally, was also an oldies station before the flip--- and that station is owned Beasley, not CC.
