SO IT'S OLDIES 93

I can't believe they'd do the Movin format. The demo for Movin is Women 25-44. That would canibalize their Urban station and it would also canibalize Simon. Why would they do that?

I've wondered that same thing....we'll find out in a couple days

WRONG!

More poppy than their Urban, more rhythmic than Simon. Most of the stuff wouldn't be on either station.

I guess the countdown was a tease??? It sounds like the official flip has happened at about 12:10pm to "93.1 - The Bull". (It's "bull" all right!!)

News flash: They're going after TQR! I am listening to WMQX via the streaming player, and they've gone from that annoying robot stunt program to country; the new name is "93.1 The Wolf." This makes two Entercom-CC radio wars going on AT THE SAME TIME! QMG vs. Kiss, and now TQR vs. The Wolf. Stay tuned...

One might hear a dozen different "tease" formats before the real McCoy surfaces, in order to pump up the buzz...

I can hear the meeting at Entercom now - "they are trying to attack us, so we'll show 'em. We'll trash a perfectly successful radio station and go after their well established, solid as a rock, country station. We can be an also ran in that format too!!!"

Pretty dumb move, if you ask me. Why wouldn't they dump Simon? Oh, year, it was already country once and didn't work!

I guess this COULD be a tease--not the real format--but let's assume it's the real thing. How many other big signal Triad stations have tried but lost at taking on WTQR over the past, say 25 years? There was "102 Jamz" all-but-forgotten predecessor "Big 102"; 98.7; 100.3 "Whistle 100"; and didn't 94.1 try country before it was Southern Gospel WWGL? Does 101.1 WPCM count? Have I forgotten anyone?

Somewhere amongst all that was 94.5 Kat Country for a spell...nobady's gonna beat WTQR as long as they have Nascar.

did anyone capture the flip ? i was actually planning on having an mp3 format of it. but ohhh noooo, they decide to go ahead and flip it, while im on my way to class, some 25 hrs in advance, to of ALLLL formats. COUNTRY!?!?
is entercom that stupid to take on WTQR? ???

i was seriously hoping for a MOViN format. but oh well. i have a feeling they are going to fail. miserably. unless they can pull some strings, listeners, and a good talent crew.

From a strictly business point of view- siphoning off a chunk of TQR's numbers would yield a sellable property, without having to actually beat them. But why would any sane person dump a cash cow format they've owned for years to lock horns with the market leader for just a slice of that pie?

I still have my doubts this is the real deal...but if it is, I'd sure like to know which firm did the market research, so I don't ever screw up and hire 'em to do anything for me.

The biggest failure was 94.5 (long before Cat Country) when it was marketed as I-95! They used the Interstate highway symbol. Biggest problem was there was WQDR in Raleigh on 94.7 so anyone tuning to 95 would hit 94.7 before they got to 94.5.

Of course, no one got the I-95 connection! I mean, we all knew it was I-85 here. I-95 was in the eastern part of the state!

What a bust!

It's happening all over.

Where does/did WPBG broadcast from?
And...not to start any rumour, but does Clearchannel own the rights to the name drive, or can Entercom use it?

According to Radio-Locator.com, WPBG is based in Peoria, IL. This appears to be a newly-launched format on that station.

This is a copy of the e-mail sent out to all Oldies 93 preferred listeners today:

By now you are aware of a major change in the radio landscape in the
Triad. We wanted to take a moment and explain what is happening and why.
As of today at 3pm Oldies 93 has changed format to 93-1 THE WOLF. The WOLF
is a music station featuring more than 50 minutes of Fresh Country music
every hour.

Why did this happen?

For some time now Oldies based radio stations like Oldies 93 have been
disappearing around the country for the same reason: Lack of advertiser
support. This has not be a ratings issue. Thanks to the support of
listeners like you Oldies 93 has maintained high ratings and was
consistently one of the top rated stations in the Greensboro, Winston
Salem, High Point market. In fact for the last three years Oldies 93 has
been one of the top five Oldies based stations in the nation. No this is
not due to lack of ratings. It is due to advertisers failing to embrace
the audience that we delivered with Oldies 93. This has also affected
movies, tv and other entertainment venues. Advertisers are seeking a
younger audience and have refused to fully embrace the baby boom
generation.

Radio stations are in fact a business that only has one source of revenue:
advertising. While Oldies 93's ratings have remained competitive, our
revenue has taken a hit over the last year. We have held off making this
kind of move longer than most stations around the country, but that day
has finally arrived. We have exhausted every possible alternative to
making this change by trying to educate the advertising community about
the value of our listeners. Unfortunately we have not convinced enough of
the advertisers to come around to our way of thinking.

Based on extensive research we have determined the best course for the
station is the launch a new radio station featuring a unique blend of
country music. And so as of today 93-1 THE WOLF is on the air and ready to
have some Paw scratchin' Fun in the Piedmont Triad.

We know that many of you enjoy country music as well as Oldies, and it is
our hope that you give the WOLF a chance to be your friend, just like
Oldies 93 was.

You're probably right. That would be sad. I worked for Voyager back in RDU's heyday. Carl Venters really knew how to do AOR. This country battle reminds me of the Charlotte war, where WKKT spent 10 years trying to unseat WSOC, and they both fell to the middle of the pack, just outside most of the national buys. Both carried lowball rate cards for years. The Urbans, CHR's, and AOR's all had bigger numbers and racked up.

There's only one problem with that e-mail... it didn't flip at 3 today!!! It flipped much earlier than that. When I turned it on around 2pm, it was country. I wonder why it says at 3pm today?
