So what has become of oldies 700 in dothan??

I went down there and spoke with the guy last spring, then he hired a local, but he just seemed real shaky at the time. I checked out tvradioworld.com and they listed them as silent. I go to oldies700.com , get redirected to oldies700.net and it is 'coming soon'.

I noticed last fall he was trying to move it for 2x what he purchased it for, which is cool (though for that signal a little unrealistic) did he move it or what exactly is the deal. Much as I love good oldies, just seems like a misfit format in the day and age. If I ever had my dithers I would flip that sucker to sports and stir the auburn-bama fires in the mornings, rome midday and either Mark Packer or perhaps Two Live Stus if it can be worked out.

Sounds like a brilliant move....another sports station to compete with the TWO
that are already in Dothan.

So is this station still dark? The oldies 700 website as been updated. Or is this another Simian, Quitman, MS situation??

The owner couldnt handle running the station, the last time he had worked in raido was over 2 decades ago.

He didn't have the billing to support the station and programmed it the way he liked, which is a big mistake. He was also very, very cheap.

I know several people who complained to me that he would only talk to them when he wanted something.

Jalo Broadcasting Incorporated
WEEL "Oldies 700" The Big Wheel
3124 West Main Street Bel Aire Center - Suite 7
Dothan, Alabama 36303

it doesnt officially have the WEEL call letters yet.

I wish them the best of luck, Id like to know what they are going to do differently...... what will keep them from failing miserably like John Abbot did.

It hit's the air March 1. Jack Gale will do morning's and my very good friend from Atlanta Chris Morgan will do afternoons. A few other seasoned jocks may be added at some point. It will be a wonderful sounding station with jocks that have a passion for the music. Hopefully they will make a buck or two while having a lot of fun.

I wish them the very best...I love to see people give local AMs the love they deserve. However, this begs the question...with the CC Dothan cluster on the market, what happens if a good operator acquires those stations and makes them locally-focused. Could be a rough operation to try to compete with.

Clear Channel would never consider selling the Dothan cluster.

700, from what i can tell, is a joke and always has been. Michael Augustus had it for not too long before Tropicana Media bought it. Tropicana had it 1 year before they sold it to John Abbott, who kept it 8 months.

The deal to Jalo hasn't officially closed per fccinfo.com, even though radio-locator says so.

AM Daytime only with a stick located 10-15 miles north of Dothan. Gonna be tough work.

I think the UHF TV rule applies here.....How do you make a small fortune?
Invest a Large fortune in an AM daytimer!

Good luck guys

Haha, I'm sorry, I don't post much on this particular board, so nobody here is too familiar with my sometimes-dry sense of humor. Just checking to see if anybody was paying attention :)

No, CC doesn't own any stations in Dothan, so of course they wouldn't consider selling them (so obviously, poledo is either right of has a great sense of humor). It just seems like everywhere you turn in the business these days, the CC shakeup is on everybody's minds. My love of sarcasm kinda got the best of me.

I am personally curious what the signal actually sounds like in Dothan. Any insight anybody?

I was just wondering Mr. Walker, how you have so much knowledge of the Dothan market? What is your interest here? Are you from this area or have you worked for one of the stations? I've asked around and nobody has heard of you, outside of this board. Where do you get all of this "inside" information? Your web site is vague at best about your career. Interesting to note the audio links are broken. I did finally find someone who had spoken with you on the phone, Mr. John Abbott. He tells me you called repeatedly to beg for a job with Oldies 700. After listening to you tell him how great you are for about an hour, you finally e-mailed him some air checks. Mr. Abbott did not hire you for one reason. Talent. You don't have any. Please refrain from talking about a station and situation of which you know nothing about. One more thing, I'd say a man who buys a station and in less than a year sells it for a hansome profit is no loser. You should do so well.
MYOB!

The Simian

Simian, doth protest too much.

BTW-Where will your programming ORIGINATE from, and why does it take 3 months to 'rebuild' the studios when John Abbott had all that was needed? His board, though an older turn knob job, was in very nice condition, he had good automation, not much in terms of production facilites from what I was shown at the time, but he was getting it together on that end as well.

As Paul pointed out. he wanted folks to do stuff for him for nothing, or for little as possible. I sent my aircheck and resume to him almost on a lark and to be honest I had forgotten about it when he
replied and once we talked it sounded like he was serious. In fact I drove all the way from North Carolina (with a nasty stomach virus that I was recoving from) to meet him and discuss it in more detail, even fooled around with the automation and did a couple of on air breaks (which was a surprise when he asked if I wanted to crack the mic). But red flags were flapping in the breeze becuse he was on the phone with Jones network while I was there trying to finangle a deal with them, so when I got on the road to head back I pretty much knew it was a wasted trip.

It was fun though making the journey because I got the chance to get a little taste of what is going on in the markets along the way, but it will be two days of my life I will never get back! John is a sweetheart of a guy, but I just have the feeling he went into this half-cocked because he had too many things going on back home in Rome Ga to really give the station the attention it needed because it is there which is where his life was.

As for what happened with Paul Walker Jr, I have a feeling you are not being entirely truthful. I cannot be for sure, but what I think really happened is that Paul ended up going over there, talked to John, figured like I did that he was wasting his time, and split. The reason why I say that is because John and some older gent who came by (I think it may have been the landlord) were talking about some guy who came by and did what I just stated. Paul would that person who split when John's back(and attention) were turned have been yourself? If so next time show a little more tact, just get up, shake the mans hand, thank him for his time and leave with your pride and dignity intact, not running away like a yellow dog.

Actually, no, I never visited WGZS in Dothan. I had been talking to John ever since he started trying to buy WQMS 1500.

The biggest gripe I had is John's asking price. Ok, sure he got some fool to pay it... but if John paid $151,000 or there abouts and couldnt make it.. how can someone doing about the same thing and paying more for the palce.. make things work?

I had someone who knew the station and situation very well admit to me theres no way they thought it was worth $295K(which is what Abbott was asking). I know John had put in a very few things, either new or used.. and that this person just couldn't figure out how John was justifying the price.

Face it, if the billing for the station was at the point where it could've commanded a $295K selling price, I doubt John would've sold it. Face the facts, John was cheap and didn't know what he was doing. I know that sounds mean, but ask most people who never worked for him, but know him.. they will agree me.

Go ahead, hate me.. but I'm speaking the truth and just alot more incredibly blunt then most of you on here ever have the balls to be. If you don't like what I've got to say, simply don't read it.

Well I'm glad to see you were not the yellow dog. Hope you took no offense to my comments.

Now I wonder what sort of price he managed to get. Personally I just don't see anyone making a dime off of oldies on AM in such an obscure market, but I could be wrong.
