So What's going on at 98.1

So we know that Quantum now has control of 98.1 wtke. So what are they going to do with it? Are they going to turn it country the way some blogs suggest? Maybe move fly to better compete with z96? Let's discuss.

do we know if there @ 100KW? i'm guessing 98.1 KROCK as 100.3 was doing quite well and this area is lacking a true classic rock station.

Ya classic rock might work. But I would think that Quantum would be afraid that it would cut into Wave's demographic. Well I live in crestview and they are coming in loud and clear so i'm assuming they are at full power.

WRKN was ranked #10 (in a 4-way tie... click "ratings" at the top of this page)--behind WWAV and less than half the share of WKSM. I don't know if a station can live on being the "third rocker" in a town this size, even with all the bar and beer money floating around Da Beach.

If Qantum indeed has their hands on 98.1, don't be surprised if they flip the SOB to Country and go after YZB. It's not that 105.5 is doing a bad job or that they're weak. It's just that... well, it's where the money is.

On the other hand, 98.1 would be a big signal upgrade for Mix. That stick out in historic suburban Portland covers a shitload of swamp. Might be surprised how well that station could do if some humans could hear it.

where is mix 103's transmitter located at? i thought hollywood blvd

Unless radio-locator.com is out of date the stick is still at Portland--suburban Freeport (halfway to Panama City). Charlie or Tibbs might remember for sure, but it seems to me that 103.1 was originally licensed to Defuniak Springs as a little ol' Class A.

Us radio types tend to forget that even if you can hear a station clearly on the car radio, FM signals have a harder time penetrating buildings once you get past the "city grade" contour--which for Mix is probably around Sandestin. So moving the SOB to 98.1 would hike them from Pretender to Contender in one fell swoop. Not sure if these guys are that smart, though...

You are correct, sir.

Art Dees owned WGTX and the FM when I briefly owned WZEP a million years ago. Flipped ZEP to talk (Sun Radio/Limbaugh) and took the standalone AM to #1 in the county. When I sold it (and before the books came out) Norm Davis flipped it to Beautiful Music... After Art sold his combo he bought ZEP, flipped it country and converted it to super-serving the community like I tried to do...

I would love for Mix to switch back to they're pre- Ivan format of rhythmic ac. They sounded really good and had good numbers i don't know why they changed it. ??? Then once u put it on 98.1 you can give cool 933 a run for it's money. Then you can flip 103.1 country.

What's the "Notification of Non-consummation" that Cumulus has just filed for 98.1?

Why would Qantum switch the call letters of 98.1 to WRKN?

Well, the "non-consumation" (sounds dirty, doesn't it?) notification confirms that they've bowed-out of the 98.1 Derby, clearing the path for Qantum to land the Big One.

And the call switch to WRKN answers our Big Question: Classic Rock returns to 98.1.

Tibbs, it just took--what?--a dozen years, 3 or 4 format changes and 3 or 4 ownership changes for the Great 98 to circle back to where you left it. Brilliant!

Classic rock is probably a good move. Since we are devoid of that in this area. 99 rock seems to be all over the place with there programming. They are ripe for the picking.

I think TJ Kelly is still in the market. I know he was talking to someone in Dallas last year, but last I heard he was working for his Dad at one of his Verizon stores.....

Be nice to hear him back on the airwaves if he's still available....

ROTFLMAO....dude, thank you! :)

Yeah, I'm still around....lol and YES I'm workin' for the 'rents till I figure out if my 15 year broadcasting career came to a screeching halt in Ft Walton Beach Florida, do I move for a Top 50 market or try to stay where I love?

Don't get me wrong, offers aren't flooding my living room, but I could probably turn something up if I wanted to move...I just REALLY REALLY love it here...so do my kids......

Thanks for the tap Biker......I'm guessin I know you?

Maybe I'll get lucky and I'll hear from the Quantum folks....I know Dan knows how to contact me....

We'll all find out. Would be nice if they gave us a head's up on the format change. Mix is doing so well, 102.1's audio sounds like total crap but I love their music. (left channel clipping/distortion, verified in the car, on my speakers and on my other Sangein radio (however you spell it)

check craig's list or mapquest, rob! You can probably pcik one up for $10. No one cares about
regular radio much anymore, much less jukebox HD stations. Whats happening on 98.1 tonight?
