So What's going on at 98.1

I'm not from the area, but just wondering if 98.1 is back to 100kw? Perhaps at midnight tonight or sometime tomorrow the New 98.1 will reveal itself.

Now 98.1 is looping U2's "New Year's Day"

And I finally heard the TOH ID: "WRKN Holt-Fort Walton Beach 98.1 FM" in a woman's voice.

Wonder what song they'll be playing tomorrow?

Or perhaps "Saturday's Alright (for Fighting)" By Elton John and/or "Saturday in the Park" By Chicago. Sunday it may be another U2 repeat with "Sunday, Bloody Sunday", followed by "Manic Monday" By the Bangels beginning Monday morning. Tuesday we'll do a rewind and hear the Moody Blues with "Tuesday Afternoon".

Mark -

You sure you don't have some programming background? That's a pretty good lineup.

O.K.

I only gave 98.1 about 2 minutes before I turned off the radio... but it appears to be a loop of instrumental piano music today. No ideas on title or artist.

Poledo,

Are u listern to 98.1 still? It's saturday what are they playing now? last time u hread was a piano music is there any website of WRKN 98.1? I know there 100.3 The Ticket website im from the Tallahassee area.

The "piano" post was from this morning, Saturday January 2, 2010. As of, say, 3PM Central they are still playing the piano on 98.1. I have no idea what it is or if it is even a professional recording

I have no idea about a website... some cyber-sluth out there should dig around for new domain names registered recently by "Qantum" or referencing "981". I'm not motivated enough to do it.

For all y'all outside the small listening area of 98.1, don't worry... you haven't missed anything memorable.

Thank you for the compliment. I actually began my radio career on the programming side. I left programming for a try at sales in the early '80s, and found, for me, anyway, there was more opportunity in sales than in programming.

I'm not sure what the "song-of-the-day" will be for Wednesday and Thursday, but for Friday it can be "Thank God It's Friday" By Love and Kisses.

98.1 Holt, FL

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields

Still looping one song.

Good night

They don't seem to have any kind of theme, at least not one that is making any sense. When WTBT-FM Thunder 105.5 Tampa was about to debut, they stunted for about week playing a handful of songs in a continuous loop that was related to the weather. A sampling of the songs played were:

Garth Brooks - The Thunder Rolls
The Doors - Riders in the Storm
Willie Nelson - It's Going to be Cloudy in the Morning (Rainy in the Afternoon)

Okay, now that I'm caught up....lol

1st off, 100.3. Ron Hale never was "The Owner", in the traditional sense that you think of when you think of someone OWNING something. The Owner was a gentleman named Lee Hagen. Ron was the LMA, as someone has previously noted. As far as checks bouncing and all that, Ron was always a fair boss to me, regardless of whatever hurdles we had to clear, and I brought my OWN SET OF HURDLES for him as well, I promise.... lol

Sometimes working for ANY Mom an Pop type company has its issues and if your boss asks you not to deposit your check till Thursday, and you drop it on TUESDAY, well then....who's fault is it really? You can either play by the rules you knew about when you came in, or go play elsewhere. He was clear as a bell to me on my 1st day that sometimes it gets tight...and we have to wait a day or two on payroll....never WEEKS...never more than two or three days....it was the deadbeats that wouldn't pay their AD BILLS that caused all that, incidentally.

When you're Cumulus or Quantum or someone big, with enough capital to cover it, it can make the little guy look like a flea market....but all in all, I would do it again, and would work for Ron Hale again tomorrow. That's coming from a 15 year veteran with major market experience, not some schmo that's desperate to break into radio...

YES, every member of the Hale family is an officer of sorts....I gotta say...with all due respect, THAT was comical as hell. One son is the President, the other is the Vice President, I think his brother or brother in law is the CFO....but Ron had the big corner office and if we needed a printer cartridge the President had to ask Dad.

lmao Just sayin...

Why in the WORLD would 98.1 give us any clue about programming? I think someone said it before, that a rocker would be stellar. Properly programmed, with a small promotional budget it could knock a serious dent in 99Rock. With NO POWER, and lots of barter for promotion we were able to put K-Rock on the map pretty quick, even if I WAS the only live body there in the last year of having live jocks...

I know this....Dan is being SUPER tight lipped about what's gonna be over there....I'm like the rest of you...I'll keep checkin in to see what loop is playing till something breaks...

Dude, I'm probably not qualified to even respond to your insight, but here goes. I think that the programming for 98.1 will come down to the decision of what market to target. If they continue to target FWB and Pensacola, I think Country and AC are out as format choices. If they concentrate on FWB and Destin, how could they justify going any other direction than Country or AC. The only wild card I see in the FWB market is the military... are there enough people on base to make a rock station and what flavor of rock would work best? What flavor of rock is Qantum brave enough to try?

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see Rock, Classic Rock, Oldies, or AAA on 98.1, but that may just be me and the rokjok.

Rob ~ think about it! Destin/FWB is only a piece of the signal pie. Gotta grab some bucks from the west side.
When 98one was rockin in the mid 90's, we had plenty of ad rev from P-Cola. And the 98 kw signal was pretty sporadic where the advertisers were. I think this is the first real test of what potential the REAL signal will have with a mass app format.

TJ ~ cool post. And honest. I never had the first issue with Ron Hale. I am with you on the insanity of small market ownership, having been there. Thank God for those big corps :) back in the day. I am not so sure they have that much more actual $$$ than Hale anymore, they just have their big desks in cities that make then seem like they are larger than life. The wizard behind the curtain tells a different story.

Yeah, I also give RH props for having to tell people to cash after 2 on Thursday. Honesty pays and if you screwed that up on your own, I bet that was a fun time explaining that you (or whoever it was) cashed
your check against his direction and therefore though you were actually Ron's boss. Hehehe! Can you print what he said? I am 6'7" and know for a fact that I couldn't have really blamed Ron for sticking his foot up my
.... had I done that. LMAO at that one. Whew. Speaking of good times, what ever happened to that guy who mgnd K-92? His name was Skip or Skiff. I can't remember. You have any idea who he is/was/were?

To be honest, I have never laughed as much as I did, in a good way on my few times hanging out with Ron Hale. Some of the issues with the IRS, FCC and all posted are here are a bit "interesting." Maybe they are all false comments. I dunno.

Another fun soul to know is Mark Carter at Seabreeze. Talk about telling like he sees it. Just a good guy who does his own thing. YEAH!

Anybody been upstairs at the Star Broadcasting building lately? Did they ever find the mad gorilla that trashed it? Only the AM studio is clean.
