So WHO was on WWKX?

Is this building still there? I'm guessing that it is (or was) on the same corner where Maggiano's is now.

the first American Center tower was built in 87...the twin facility some years later...located right on the corner
of 31st and West end (on the right as you drive west)...Maggiano's is in the middle of the block...halfway between
the American Center and Outback. KX studios were on the 12th floor with an amazing view from the studio...
panorama of downtown to the lefy...VU campus...and a straight view towards Brentwood on the horizon.
I used to watch the jets approach BNA three deep...very cool. And the thunderstorms...

Wow, I never thought I'd ever see my name on here to start a thread...

I only did mornings on Kicks briefly, after Coyote and before the "Rock Hits 104" experiment. Most of my time was afternoon drive, coming over from 92Q for that one magic book when we became the first station outside Davidson County to hit #1. Later it was middays on Kicks when Chuck Britton came down from WLS... during Rock Hits, and ultimately the All New 104 in those dream studios in the West End sky (I still kick myself for not taking any pictures of that showplace!)

Along with Chuck, some other Kicks 104 alums coming to mind are Jay Hasting, Paul Rollins, Bob Mayben and his oldies show, and Channel 5's Ron Howes doing weather.

I've been spending the week digging through storage boxes for the few Coyote pictures that I had with him -- including Dirty Dribbler basketball, a media stock car race in Glasgow Ky, and at my surprise birthday party. Hope I can scan them to the Yahoo users group soon...

Don't think anyone mentioned the Pina Colada king Brian Seargent?

Yep, sure did.....If I remember correctly, Brian came to KX from Lexington, KY. Mr. Seargent, feel free to correct me if this is incorrect........

Wow Jack, I actually got cold chills hearing the old Star 97 jingle (Sorry for sliding off topic). It's funny how to this day "Star 97" still resonates in my head, but the whole "RQQ" "Classic Hits" etc etc has never caught on with me. I'm liking the Classic Hits format, but you did a fantastic job at 97 years ago. I understand why they switched to Oldies, but I'm VERY curious where Star 97 would be in the ratings today if it had stayed - I'm guessing well above WSM-FM. It was beginning to gain a good deal of momentum and catch on before the flip. I vote for Jack Shell during the day on "Star 95" and the ride home on it's step sister station, KDF.

Don't want to take this off-topic. Thanks for the nice words. Star 97 is the station that brought me to Nashville, and we had some nice moments there. Worked with people who were top-notch pros too. Bittersweet memories from a decade ago, and I've been lucky to even have a career in this market. :)

But the KX-104 jingles, I've been trying to acquire them for some time. Thanks again to Jon Anthony for getting them out there for us. I didn't live here then, obviously, but I figured that you nostalgia freeks would enjoy the trip back in time. I think many of us have been a little nostalgic with Coyote's passing, and the uncertainty of today's marketplace.

The last four of five KX jingles were the ones I remember the most. They had the tempo. Gotta say the Star jingles were solid and don't seem dated and old, unlike the jock in that Star 97 Aircheck. :)

The success of Star 97 was its branding. They actually kept the Star 97 name through several format changes. Then when they tried to re-create Oldies 96.3 over 97.1, it just didn't work. ("Oldies 96.3" was also a successful brand. Remember the license plates?) For the same reason, a Star 95 wouldn't work, either. So I vote against re-creating Star 97 on 95.5, and instead vote for bringing back SM-95. Although there are probably valid reasons why that wouldn't work, either. I wasn't here in the SM-95 heyday, but I enjoyed their re-creation on Live 365.

since the subject has veered into jingles..i am looking for a set that simply shouts out the year..like 1963..1964..etc through about 1983...i have edited a really good jingle package for my internet station by finding generic jingles and adding swooshes, lasers, explosions etc..but i would really love to have a set of the year shouts i've searched under just about every thing i can think of online...anyone have a source or maybe the actual jingles you wouldn't mind an old man using ??? ;D thanks

This might help refresh your brain. Courtesy of Jon Anthony, KX104's 1980 TM Production jingle package. Cuts from "Fusion" and "The Penetrators" here for your enjoyment, including jock cuts.

Thanks, Jack...very cool: just like finding a $20 in a pair of old jeans.

CR - Congrats!!!!! You won the National Mega Crumulus Cash Giveaway Prize? $20.

Buddy , I will buy the PBR's if CR will buy the Krystals. $20, after taxes, should buy three Krystals, right? They say there is no free lunch...

Thanks Tibbs & Romer. I've found I can't afford them after listening to some slick talking (if incorrect) money managers show in Chattanooga....oh woe is me...

I remember when the package arrived at KX, St. John took a couple of us into the production room and ran through all of them. Man, it is a shame these times are gone............

Hey, Jack, don't worry about taking this one off-topic. (What was the topic anyway? Even I digress.) At any rate, you were better than anything that they've had on there nowadays. They should drop Bob & Tom, and bring you back! By the way, weren't you on Oldies 96.3 even before you were on Star 97? Thought I had heard you on 96.3.

I forget the order of "move in's" to Nashville but seemed to remember 104 being one of the first.
It covered northside and downtown well and when their sales people got out and noticed all the holes in parts of town like Brentwood and Green Hills they realized some revenue potential was lost. Never seemed listenable in Franklin. But for a while the answer out of gallatin was to push the modulation up even louder. This was before the current days of cleaner limiters that mask some of the overmodulation. But Kicks sounded good talent and music wise, but was sometimes a challenge to take noting the real local stations like 92, 95, 98, 103, and 106 were full, impressive and everywhere.
Didnt they relocate the tower/transmitter site?

I'm still taken with how strong 92q was. Little stick in Hendersonville, 3000 watts then, and Steve Mccoy and Mary glen Lassiter going up against some real powerhouses. Hats off to those stations that had those limitations and really succeeded off being so well programmed
