So who/what is going to replace Burbank? Does anyone know yet?

No replacement has been named, But the PD of WLW said in The Post that the replacement show will be a "comedy/entertainment" show.

Define "Comedy/Entertainment". I have to scratch my heads at CC/Kenwood of late.

It'll be two guys punching each other in the groin for three hours, plus some two minute commercials with Tanya Roberts selling timeshares.

Considering what programmers think is "comedy/entertainment" now, I can bet it's gonna suck.

Just in case Darryl Parks is wondering, Tracy Jones doesn't clasify as "comedy/entertainment"...

I highly doubt it will be Tracy Jones. Unless the money is big I doubt Tracy would take the paycut from his day job.

What I would do if I were the one making the decision, would to be find a good morning show on a Rock or CHR and give them the gig. Of course that's if there is a decent budget.

He retired. Apparently he thought it was time to take it easy. He's walking away from the mic on his own accord.

Will Clear Channel be doing "Comedy / Entertainment" ... with voice-tracking to replace Burbank?

If they can get away with it, yes.

After hearing bits and pieces of Gary's 'highlights' shows the past couple days, I'm starting to think I preferred Gary recently for his basic ad-libbing and not the overly produced segments, especially the older ones.

The few production segments I heard about Christmas on Monday's show reminded me of the time a few years ago when I stopped listening. I'm talking about the shows where they had so many voices and what-not in the background saying things that the segment usually resulted in a manic mess.

A few characters were great though, Gilbert Knarley was the best. The ones that come to mind are the Kentucky Jelly one, the 'do you have these toys' ones, and one I haven't heard in years where he called the Columbus Zoo and kept asking ridiculous questions which the poor guy truly tried to answer.

You know, I think you nailed it.

I really enjoyed Gary in the early days of his afternoon show. There wasn't all the clutter in the bits or the studio.

And sometimes his adlibbing was great. I didn't hear Monday's show, but heard the 5 o'clock hour of the Christmas day show. There was a Gnarly bit that I caught the tail end of that was cute. Then Pitts doing the Night before Christmas. It had some great lines and moments, but some of it didn't catch fire. Then he interviewed a lady who took a toilet seat back that played the Star Spangled Banner when someone set on it. The lady and Gary just weren't in sync.

My favorite Gnarly skit was years ago when he called M&M Mars to tell them he found counterfit M&Ms. He went through several people and finally ended up in legal I believe. When asked how he knew they were not counerfit, he said they all had Ws on them.

I seem to remember another time when he called a help or suicide line and got put on hold.

But yes, sometimes the show became a manic mess. And some of my preference may be a bit of romanticizing. The original line up of Jim Scott, Randy Michaels and Alan Gardner, Gary, and Trumpy was some of the funnest and neatest radio I remember. When Randy left the midday mix, that was the beginning of the end for me. And I simply quit listening on a regular basis with Cunningham and Furman in key dayparts.

Not to diss Gary. He is a truly remarkable talent.

Burbank of the early and mid 90's was untouchable...and he is still good...to be that good, that long without just "phoning it in" is incredible.

As for the future of WLW...have no fear, CC is here...oh, better worry.

Simply put, WLW circa 1984-86 may have been one of the best radio stations ever...Add to those listed above the Million Dollar weekend guys like Dusty Rhodes, Dave Rinehart, and Doug Silver, plus the Reds, Andy Mac, The original Truckin' Bozo, Dale Summers, John Phillips, the pre-Premiere Mike McConnell, great old news guys like Bill Ridenour and Don Webb, and production genius John Bogart, and it's hard to imagine anything better. People have spent so much time over the years branding Randy Michaels as the antichrist that it's been forgotten just how good he was on the air with Alan Gardner. Anyone else remember how they used to mess with farm director Bob Ziegler? When he'd give the prices for April hogs, they'd start singing, "Aaaaapril Hogs...Are foooorrrr the very youuunnng"...

The old airchecks would be good if anyone has any to offer. Back in the 84-86 period, 700 was competing with 55KRC, and i thought both stations sounded better because of the competition. Randy brought 700 back from the dead, and it sounded great back then. Today's 700 I can hardly stand to listen to. Jim Scott nees to go somewhere like WDJO where he can play music, I heard him on Christmas Eve around 7 pm, playing Christmas music, and he sounded much better than he does in the morning with what he is required to do. Mike McConnell needs to suppress his ego, and go back to what made people want to listen to him to begin with. Cunningham can be humorous at times, and so can Scott Sloan, but it also gets to be a bit juvenile at times. Hopefully, Daryl Parks will pull a surprise and put a strong talent in Burbank's slot, and not some political/angry white guy type of talk show.

Oh, I forgot Ziggy's Piggys and the farm report.
