So Why Is Now 92.3 Avoiding The Big Pop/Rock Records?

"CHR sounds great right now, and the ratings all over the country prove it...About as good as CHR has sounded since it's 80's hey day!"

You can't argue with ratings, although I bet that CHR while doing good is not anywhere close to the numbers the format had in the 1980s.

CHR in those days played a variety of music that many people still love 25 years later. The rhythmic CHR music on the radio right now won't be remembered 8 years from now much less 25.

I'd love to see true CHR/top 40 come back with a balanced mix of rhythmic/pop/rock/urban/country/mor but those days appear to be over and we are musically poorer as a nation because of it.
 
I listened to an aircheck of Q102 from June 2003, and most of the songs played then are rarely heard today.
 
Great point! I think one of the reasons today's songs won't last 25 years is that stations burn them out so much! Now will actually play "Poker Face" about 1000 times in this 10,000 in a row. Many stations burn thru stuff so fast now it has no shot as a gold when you are sick of it forever. Also while most CHR gold retires to Mainstream AC, and I really don't see Flo Rida on Lite in 10 years, but it is New York, so you never know!
 
That's the nature of Top 40, play what's hot and play it often. There has always been a lot of disposable music in the format.

I love listening to those old Casey Kasem AT40 countdowns. Let me tell you, the MAJORITY of the songs never got played 25 years latter. Many weren't even played one year latter!
 
Can't quite imagine any of the songs NOW is playing will be remembered as classics even 5 years from now but they are certainly hits today. "Disposable" music. So typical of our society today.
On another note I know NOW is building cume but how long will they play the same 15 songs? Will they not add new songs in rotation until their 10,000 songs in a row are over?
 
I think this coming week NOW FM will add some more songs to the list. Has NOW played the new Kayne West hit that AMP Radio out in LA played when they launched?

Here's a broad generalization about oldies for you. I think pop and rock-leaning hits have more staying power than r&b, dance or rhythmic-leaning ones, as evidenced by today's Oldies radio. The most popular forms of Oldies radio today, including Classic Hits and Adult Hits, are virtually all pop-rock now, no matter which decade they emphasize. Motown, which used to be all over Oldies radio, has virtually disappeared in today's gold-based formats. Disco is played only as part of a feature show or for the occasional OMG reaction. Today, the best dance/r&b/soul classics are pretty much relegated to Rhythmic or Urban Oldies, which don't get big ratings. On the flip side, Classic Rock is the most popular of all the Rock-oriented formats. So, I agree that most of today's hip hop hits will not be heavily played on Oldies radio 25 years from now. But, I'll bet you will hear Kelly Clarkston and Nickelback.
