Social Media: The Emperor Has No Clothes

So take down the Facebook page, tear down the website, and dammit those people will listen whenh we damn well tell them.

What comes to mind is a certain breast cancer charity that thought it was in charge of it's brand last week.

"Stop! Hey, what's that sound? Everybody look 'what's goin' down..."

Watch Syria, Cairo II.

"What a field day for the heat, a thousand people in the street..."

The only reason you see that over there is because their basic cable is horrible: 14 religious channels, 4 government channels, 3 shopping channels, one Spanish channel, and "I Love Lucy" reruns.

And HOLLAND, for some reason you always point out that "you're all here on this forum, so that proves my point about social media...and you're all hypocrites".

That's based on a VERY liberal assumption that if I weren't typing this here, I'd be communicating it to my fav talk radio station. NOT TRUE.

Did you know... #SuperBowl46 generated 12.2 million social media comments - up almost 600% vs last year's game! (via Bluefin)

But it's all a passing fad.

Will it rain tomorrow? I'll have details at 11 (and you WILL wait until then and not cheat by accessing it online)

RE #SuperBowl46 generated 12.2 million social media comments

Show prep tip: Useful resource you can reference today RE Super Bowl commercials:
http://www.usatoday.com/superbowl46/admeter.htm

Ask callers about Clint Eastwood Chrysler spot, getting lots of buzz.
Predictably, Limbaugh and his wanna-be's will call it an Obama ad.
(By REPUBLICAN Eastwood?)
Caller just now on HC client station Talk107.3FM/Baton Rouge:
"If that commercial didn't make you feel like you were watchin' 'Rocky,' there's somethin' wrong withya."

Wow.

12 million incongruent and disjointed thoughts.

Likely nearly 12 million writers of comments and about a dozen or so who actually read more than one other comment.

I'm impressed.

Sadly, people-who-shall-go-nameless feel vindicated with such numbers, but what's REALLY going on here? What does all that blather actually add up to?

Ultimately, ZERO. People entertain themselves by leaving nonsensical comments and fragmented thoughts. It's not about the reading, it's about the writing. Ego.

Maybe radio talk stations should just have no host and an open line for anybody to call in and make disjointed statements....'cause that'll work. That'll be entertaining and keep 'em comin' back for more!

OK Jas, you win. Let's pull all of our station Facebook and Twitter accounts down, pretend social media doesn't exist and we can start running promos about "two way telephone talk" again. No cellphones either, you must call in on a landline. Don't mention television on air as we don't want people to watch it. We don;t do ads for movies or mention them since we don't want people to turn off the radio to go to the movies. We're perfectly happy to let others define our brand, because this is the 1970s damn it!

Thinking of "yourself" or your station as a "brand" is that first litlte bit of slope at the top of a long,
slippery hill. First off, it's permitting someone else to define things as brand-able.

In the same way I have never gotten a tatoo, I would not permit such a rigid definition of what "is".

Social media is glorified CB radio, and about as useful in the long run.
It has a place and a purpose.
Trying too hard to be what you are not eventually exposes you as some kind of poser.

RE "...some kind of poser"

"poseur?"

Meanwhile, back-on-the-legacy-platform, DISAPPOINTMENT, that Talk Radio's top star isn't available for the two pertinent conversations lighting-up Social Media today, the-first-Rush Limbaugh Show-following:
1. The Florida Primary, and
2. The Super Bowl.

Rush is off, and, as-best-I-can-decipher-it, the name attached to the sissified Australian accent I’m hearing is “Mack Stoin;” and this guy is SO self-amused that dang-near every-other-sentence is interrupted by him-chuckling-about how-clever what-he-hasn’t-finished-saying-yet will be.

Memo to Arbitron: Can we run numbers from PPM markets across-the-USA which compare days-when-Rush-is/isn’t-there, and sort by guest host?

Ultimately the CB radio was good for: talking dirty, picking up "chicks" and reporting where the nearest speed trap was.

Yet-another common thread!

Yet-ANOTHER-thing the legacy platform and Social Media have in common.
NO PLACE was better for "picking up 'chicks'" than the 1970s radio station request line.
;)

Create a STRAWMAN much?

Resorting to hyperbole when faced with a logical argument does not become you.

Stations that force-feed social media references look desperate. Like a 38 yr old chubby chick in hip-huggers.

Eye off the ball.

JUST KIDDING!

My gullible amigos,

OBVIOUSLY, jas2525 is kidding.
He/she is a closet funster, giggling because you're taking his/her daffy stuff literally.
It's a gag....a tease so counterintuitive and oblivious to evidence EVERYWHERE, it'd have to be a spoof.

And it's working SO well that, as this thread adds pages, I feel...compelled...to re-post the link to the aircheck referenced by the fan who kicked-off this thread: http://getonthenet.com/Ed02-03-12.mp3

All because you don't like my criticism, doesn't mean I cannot criticize.

I just think too many people are temporarily caught up in it to be objective and consider the big picture.

Holland, I see what you did there.

That's why I'm a fan.

Nothing temporary about interacting with listeners. That is the big picture.

Junking up your programming with references to a superfluous glorified IM is unnecessary. That IS the big picture.

Wanna participate in a MEANINGFUL way? CALL in? Otherwise, it's just the host reading hit-and-run comments. Fascinating.
