Sohio Weather Sounder

I remember Gary B. as "That Sohio Guy". I even remember that spot changing to BP, but after that...nothing.

I fully agree with inquisitor. Sohio WAS Ohio's gas station chain. After BP took over, a LOT of people (my parents included) stopped going. My father still boycotts BP today. You have a textbook case here on how BP Lost Ohio.

I do remember both commercials that were posted. I remember when they switched the signs from SOHIO to BP at the stations. I always remember feeling pride when I saw the SOHIO signs and I was sad when they disappeared. It's been the same thing for my family. I don't go to BP and really haven't since.

They really did a lot of the same things GM did that led to GM's downfall, and a lot of the same things radio is doing: A standardized, cookie-cutter approach, all done by the numbers. Chopping out a lot of small stations in favor of fewer stations only at the busiest corners. Theoretically the right decisions, but then again, TV stations "theoretically" have 60-mile digital signals.

The reality has turned out quite different where, cutting out the nighttime host to save a few sheckles, has led to an overall loss of business. Same with BP and cutting out the small stations that Marathon welcomes. Another example of management by numbers leading to FAILURE.

P.S. Who was the rocket scientist that thought putting up "Amoco Fuels" signs was something that would attract more business? Sohio/Boron fuels ... would be another story!

I don't buy gas at BP stations because it seems that their price is always higher than whatever place is right across the street. Is the assumption that people will think it's better gas because the price is higher?

Speedway won by having these huge, spacious, well-stocked and heavily promoted convenience stores, and the rewards card. I'll admit that I'll usually look for a Speedway because I know they have restrooms (most I don't need to get a key and go around back for except for some of their older stores), the stores are usually clean, and it doesn't hurt that my daughter works there.

I used the Sounder about 10 minutes ago on-air...severe wx in the DFW area....I couldnt resist.

Bless you, but don't let the head honchos hear about it or they'll treat you like the little station in Ohio! :)

Ran it at WCWA back in the 70s

I worked at WCWA in Toledo and actually ran the spot on a number of occasions when on the 6-midnight on air shift. We ran it more often depending on how low the prediction was. I think we ran it 4x/hr. if the low was -5 or worst (or better if you liked to extra $$ coming in). Glad to find a clean copy linked.

How was the copy read in Toledo? Did it mention only Sohio or did you mention Sohio and Boron (their brand in Michigan)?

Funny store about these Sohio "sounders". One late weekday afternoon in January. 1967, my father and I were driving up I-75 from Cincinnati to Dayton for a basketball game. My dad was driving and we went through a brief snow squall. Never one to want to drive in bad weather, my dad questioned if this was how the conditions were going to be and asked me to check the radio for the weather. As I did one of those "sounders" was played. "Tonight's low will be 20 degrees. Use Boron with iceguard at your Sohio dealer.....". Apparently not familiar with those Sohio spots, my father frustrating responded, "Is that supposed to be a weather forecast?". When I hear one of these from years back, I remember that moment.
