In a letter in my local paper this morning, a writer
criticized WGHP/FOX8 for delaying the Osbournes'
show, but more importantly, not publicizing the fact
that the show would air in the Triad after midnight;
the show had been listed in the Greensboro News &
Record as airing after "American Idol." The writer went
on to say that Fox has shows with bad language and
subject matter in the early evening, so why delay this
one, which aired relatively late for Fox? The letter's
point was: let the viewers be allowed to see the show
at the scheduled time and let the ratings determine if
it should air there, not leave it to management to decide
before the program airs.
But as I said on another posting, this is a conservative
market and the managers of all big-four affiliates (WFMY,
WGHP, WXII, and WXLV) will not hesitate to pre-empt or
delay shows they find objectionable, or think their
viewers will find objectionable. The letter writer thinks
that should be the viewers' call, not management's.
I didn't see the show and cannot comment, but I understand
where this person is coming from. It's like WHDH's Ed Ansin
deciding that Jay Leno won't work at 10 PM when the show
hasn't even aired yet and there are no ratings to go by.
