Some minor Lubbock developments...

Just wanted to make note of a couple of things gong on.
First, Ron I really like the job you are doing on Kool 98 in the afternoons. You're a perfect fit for Landon's old slot, I hope you keep doing it. You sound good! Kool 98 sounds good!

Second, I think True Country 105.3 might actually make get some very good ratings, could actually make a dent in the Lubbock market. I saw the first comercial on KCBD yesterday. Looked very polished and professional. The stations also sounds a lot better than it did as JACK. Sound is in stereo, and the signal sounds better now. Be afraid KQBR, be very afraid. KLLL might have something to worry about too. Promises to be a good 3 way race.

Third, I really like the new Channel 8-7-7! It too is in stereo now, and the Pop-Alternative they are playing is something that hasn't been heard in the Lubbock market before. 8-7-7 now occupies the key on my car radio that used to be reserved for JACK. The JACK format has yet to resurface in Lubbock, and I wonder if it will.

Finally, I've caught a few bits here and tere of the new morning show on Z102, and I have to say, it is very good. This is perhaps the best thing I have heard in Lubbock since Jay, Chris and Dina were on the Z. It is no suprise that this show comes from the station where Jay Shannon is the PD. If Z102 could just do some TV spots and throw up some billboards, Z102 might make a come back, imo.

All good stuff!

I've heard 'em..believe me, nobody's shakin in their boots in Lubbock. Same songs different order. Too many formats on a station thats meant to be on a bird full time. That alone is a death sentence. Garrett, you've been around, well informed, obviously read alot. Go back to earlier discussions of the fairness of Arbitron and you'll find the "hidden answers."... True Country will peak at about a 2.5 share which will be good enough to make a living with. Since the numbers have come out I can recall once that we've actually had to pull up the maximizer to "state our case" with a client. It's the folks who are uninformed and "think" they know what their talking about that eventually lose, and lose the ad money. We all have our windows that we operate in and make the best money we can in the meantime. I will say one thing Garrett. I would be scared, very scared if our billing fell 5 cents short of this time last year. As I see it, we out bill KLLL, we out bill FMX... what the hell is there to be scared of? The big bad Arbitron wolf?

Something I'd like KQBR to do is make some new on air promos to play in between songs.

The ones they play now make me want to change the station. Not long ago, they played one from time to time that had someone making growling noises like a bear in the mic. It just sounded very bad. The promos with the high pitched country voice need to go. Here is one i've heard from time to time: "It don't get no better than that except on your front porch. 99.5 The Bear!!!" Not only are they highly annoying, but it makes it seem like this town is full of rednecks/hicks.

Now, i'm not sure if they have made new ones or not. I don't listen to KQBR as often. I'm more of a KLLL fan. But if they are still playing those in between songs, they need to get rid of those ASAP.

you're right. We seperated ourselves from Triple L with Barry Corbin, and the first couple of years it worked.
We've now moved on from Barry to a female voice that is a stretch for country, but we all agreed that she was perfect for the female direction we're going. Not many males showing up in surveys nowdays, and if they ARE there, they are pretty wishy washy on what they prefer. None of us are mind readers. Wish I was.
The only thing you can do is what your gut tells you, then get a second and third opinion. But overall your comment is right on. thanks.

Hey Blaster, my apologies, I think you took me a bit too seriously...
I was more trying to compliment 105.3 than to say that the Bear can easily be beaten by them.
Please don't take it personal.

Yeah, I was listening on my drive to Dallas today and noticed it. The female voice sounds much better! ;D

As for the True Country format, I have to disagree with Garrett regarding KJDL. I do agree that it is more necessary then Jack FM, however, I don't think KLLL and KQBR have anything to worry about. KLLL and KQBR is more local. KJDL is just another satellite feed that plays the same stuff as KLLL and KQBR. And it may have a better signal, but it is still not as superior as the signals from KLLL and KQBR. KJDL begins to fade out when you get to Lorenzo. KLLL and KQBR on the other hand I have heard past Guthrie.

A compliment to KLLL...

about a week ago, on a Friday evening, I had to travel to Lubbock from Clovis on a quick trip. If it were not for KLLL, I do not believe I would have felt like I was actually in Lubbock, except for the signs and buildings of course.

On that particular evening, a jock named "Mudflap" happened to be on the air. I do not know if this was voice-tracked or live, but I do know this: In the limited amount of time I spent flipping around, KLLL was the only station mentioning local stuff, talking about some local concert, and sounding involved in these events. "Mudflap" sounded like he was there, in other words.

While the other stations sounded professional and great, I missed any local talent. Other than "Mudflap", I only heard a female voice on Mix back announce a tune, and nothing but the Image-Voice-Liner deals on all other stations. Delilah (i think) was on one station that failed to ID itself; Lou Brutus was on FMX doing a national thing.

I found myself listening to Mudflap more -- and I'm hardly a country fan -- because I wanted to get a feel for the town I was in. By the way, I did not hear a single pre-produced Image-Voice thingy on 'LLL that evening, just this Mudflap guy before and after spots and between songs, sounding like he was actually there.

These sort of experiences are becoming increasingly rare on radio these days, and not what I expected late on a Friday night.

In fairness -- a lot of the new music (particularly hip-hop) makes me want to drive into a light pole -- so other stations might have had more stuff if I'd listened to them longer.

Anyways, KLLL seemed to be the pulse of Lubbock that evening, and it was rather nice.

But Eggs, will the majority of listeners care or even notice that day parts come from a dish?
I'm not so sure. One time, I was taking a class at Tech and all the other students in the course were farm hands. Their station of choice? KRBL. Guess what? They didn't know or care who the DJs were, or whether they came from Lubbock or somewhere else. In KJDL's case, they have live local shows during key shifts. And guess what? Kool 98 has roughly the same number of local shows that KJDL has. The difference? Kool 98 uses market targeted Voice Tracks which mask the fact that those DJ's aren't in Lubbock, while KJDL has to rely on a network. Think about it? What's the difference? Us radio junkies can tell, but I am not sure the average listener can.

Perhaps I used language too strong to suggest that anybody should "be afraid." However, I still think that 105.3 will draw some listeners that would otherwise go to The Bear and 3L. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll see.

Spoken like a true West Texan. I don't even see how hip hop radio even survives out there. Everytime I go out to West Texas to visit family, I still get the dirty looks from the "opposite race" when I go into an establishment to sit down and eat.

To bucwhyl ---

didn't mean it as some racial thing, just that I don't get why anyone would want to listen to the "hip hop" these days. Actually, I kind of like the older stuff --- but Ludacriss? How does someone like that (100% annoying/0% talent) get a record deal? I'm just too old...

Anyway, so this doesn't become a hip-hop discussion...you bring up a great point for this board:

How do two hip-hop stations survive in Lubbock...PLUS Z102?

I have to agree with everybody....only my opinion, and even though I am directly involved, the choices to move to sydicated programs that we are forced to make are exactly that... choices we are forced to make. its what happens when someone is driving through and making their choices on first time impressions and we're right in the middle of non-local programming. Its much like when Gulfstar and the star-system were around..where voice tracking began... you don't see any of the stations that still track over-coming.. the correct time,.... the correct and current wx. heck, how bout answering the phone. These are problems p.d.'S STILL have nightmares over. It's all about money and what you can afford to do or not do.
Mudflap does a great job... they all pretty much do over at Wilkes. Its what makes the job fun... trying to make it all work.

I really didn't take it as racial. You are just a person who is not a hip hop fan. My point is, when I go to Lubbock, or Midland, I feel like I've went back in time. The old ways of doing things.

Anyway, do you like Bill O'Reilly? You sound like him. You say Ludacris has no talent. Did you know that he got his start as a radio personality at Hot 97, (now Hot 107.9) in Atlanta? Did you know that he has his own record label? Did you know that he has discovered alot of other successful artists? Did you know that he has his on charity, (The Ludacris Foundation)? But he has no talent?.....

to get that rich WITHOUT any evidence of talent, he must have made a deal with the Devil, the same deal Ryan Seacrest made, with the Devil.

Ok in your opinion, who has talent?.....

[EDIT], you live in West Texas, don't you?

[EDIT-inflammatory content]

OH GEEZ!

I wish I didn't even mention 'Luda, or hip-hop, or anything. Apologies all around.

That's interesting info on Ludacriss...I think I might actually like him as a radio personality! HA!

Back on topic, I think KISS-FM is a pretty sweet sounding radio station. Maybe you guys are too close to the market to be objective. Their stream sounds awesome.

Nick, you are right!

102-5 Kiss FM does sound great!
Right now, over the air there's an audio problem causing some kind of constant feedback out of the right stereo channel, which GAP still hasn't fixed yet. Also, Kiss at the Club on Sat nights is always in mono. But those things aside, the rotation is solid, the elements are fresh, and it is good to hear 102.5 using Kiss jingles again (they used Kiss FM packaged Jingles back in the 90s, but sung to "Z102."

Also, I'm glad that ugly Black and Red "K104" rip-off logo is gone. Sorry, but there's no more Kiss 104.3, so no need for "Red and Black," unless you're plaing Tech Football!

p.s. Speaking of K104, its obvious that they are imlying "Kiss104" with their logo. So why hasn't Clear Channel tried to stop them yet?
