Someone on AM is flipping this weekend (or so I have been told)

Plus, pick up Jime Rome in November. Is the clocking ticking on 730 now?

The first nail in 680's coffin was when they cancelled the Leon Gray show, giving the station no local image whatsoever. Then the final nail in the coffin was when Air America was sold and the line up changed. No more Jerry Springer, Al Franken, Mike Malloy, and Janeane Garofalo. The network is now a shell of its former self.

Air America was never even alive in Memphis. It just didn't pull the numbers.

AAR was never good radio, politics aside. Malloy was by far the best air talent they had and they blew him out.

As usual, you are dead-on correct, sir.

I agree... Randi Rhodes and Ring of Fire on the weekends are about the only thing I can listen to on 680 now.

On occasion I can do Tom Hartman but only for a little while...

I know that this might not could happen until next year, but I'd hope that 680 could get the rights to UT football.

They could do Ole Miss as well. They have a geat nighttime signal into N Mississippi. Theoretically they make Oxford at night very well.

The new website is http://www.680wsmb.com/.

It does, in fact sport the Vols logo.

I found out that the link in the UT logo goes to http://www.utsports.com. when I checked the station list at http://www.utsports.com/Multimedia/Default.aspx?id=35066 it shows 680 as the station for Memphis. I'm surprised they were able to get it this soon. I thought that it would already be locked in to 730 for this season. I guess there's a chance they might have carried last night's game, but I couldn't have picked them up in the Jackson area at night.

If 730 does flip as a result of all this, what will happen with ESPN radio? Could that end up at WHBQ?

WSMB announced they had the Vols rights for this year a couple of months back. 730 only had a one year deal last year and Host Communications didn't like their signal so they were happy to switch to a better signal in 680. And yes they carried the Vols game last night after the Cards.

With KQPN losing Jim Rome in November, and the fact that Dan Patrick is no longer with ESPN, they are dead. Dan Patrick and Jim Rome where the shows drawing people to the station. Chris Vernon benefited some from this but hasn't been able to effectively keep them past the first hour of his show as sports fans returned to WHBQ or went to afternoon shows like Mike Fleming if they like talk. Now that Vernon has no lead in, his show won't be growing.

The question is what will WHBQ do to compete? With Lapidus reducing his show 1 hour (it's by far the most listened to show on 560) and with Jim Rome on a better signal, WHBQ's ratings will suffer more than they already are. I will be curious to see if WMSB adds a local show next year to try and compete locally more.

Should be interesting to watch (although is anyone even listening?)

)

Also, does it seem to anyone else that 730's power, weak as it was, has been even weaker lately? I have had problems getting them east of Clark Tower in the DAYTIME. When was it announced that Rome was leaving 730?

As for Verno, he's got to feel like the last man on the Titanic; he and Patrick were the only reasons I listened to 730 any more. if 680 is smart, they will try and get him, and Calkins too.

I used to be able to get 730 with a weak signal when they were CCM around Dyersburg (although I'm living closer to Jackson now), and they were supposed to have had a CP for a power increase, but I can't get them at all now until I actually get into Memphis. Have they actually made the changes they were supposed to, because I think their signal is actually worse at least to the North and East.

The signal for 730 is horrible in Millington. I completely gave up last year during the NBA Finals due to so much static. I tried all three sports stations in Millington this week. 560 sounds good and I still can barely get in 730, but 680 sounds really good in the city. 680 has a real strong signal in Millington.

Vols are probably far more listened to than Cardinals...so, the choice would be fairly easy if there were no alternative places to air one or the other.
Plus, I may be wrong, but back in the days when I worked stations that played a lot of Tennessee Radio Network News and programs...they didn't care that much what you played program-wise...as long as you aired their commercial messages in a timely fashion.
That may be the case-or not.
