Something up in Charleston?

The only problems with WWNU and WWNU is that they cannot be heard that well in downtown Columbia and they are marketing themselves to the outer limits of Columbia and frankly with the power that WCOS has we need something to give them a run for their money with some power behind it. If we get WNKT and it is left with its same programming as a country station with 40,000 watts and the tower being in Eastover, then they have a better chance of giving WCOS the competition that it badly needs because it is boring to listen to because it is not even live half of the time.

WWNQ is located on top of the SouthTrust/Capitol Center Tower, right next to WARQ and the WLTY aux. It doesn't have any problems with reception downtown other than possibly some multipath that all the downtown stations have. I can't speak to WWNU, although its directional antenna knocks it out before you leave Kershaw County heading East toward Florence.

WNKT would actually be located near St. Matthews, I believe... the proposal had it on the WIGL stick.

If Columbia gets ANOTHER country station among the ones we already have and can receive from out of town, then I am done with getting excited about radio. Period.

That is my thinking...... The question is what will they do different with The Wolf than they did with Cat... I dunno what the breakdowns are for cat, but they were not setting the world on fire with their ratings 12+ that is... When I was visiting my parents back in August Cat was kinda boring sounding to be honest, but then again I only got to listen to them during the day... As for them making the move to Cola I am wondering if they will start mid November... stunt with Christmas music then launch a full CHR attack with get this "Live and Local jocks" and give NOK a real run for the money..... With NOK on auto pilot after JR Citadel could really put a whoppin' on NOK... JMO!!! CC1

Isn't Citadel going to leave Cat Country on 107.5 when moving to Columbia? Thats what I thought I read they are moving the whole station and format. Citadel wants to compete with Clear Channel's WCOS 97.5 I would say. So thats the reason Citadel flipped Sunny to Wolf so they can still compete with WEZL 103.5.

Where did you read this at?

Because Brian Driver and Co. just kicked ass in Charleston, right? Granted, the dust hasn't settled, but who thinks it's a good idea to have Driver involved with either the Columbia move-in (fail in one market, try another?) or the launch of the Wolf (a rose by any other name....)?

Citadel has said in it's PR that they have the knowledge, resources, manpower, etc, to be the top country station in the Low Country. So, they were just laying in wait this last 10 years or so? Waiting for WEZL to nod off before pouncing?

Citadel has shown ZERO knowledge regarding country programming in Charleston over the last 10 years or so...from the transition from Bubba to Cat...from Steve, Sherry and Mudflap to Mike Tyler to Dusty Chandler to the short lived "(Eric) Chaney & The Joe" to Rick & Bubba (???) to Mudflap & Hagan to John Boy & Billy...it's like they never really cared whether they won or not, as long as they kept WEZL below a ten share so that they always had the #1 station 12+ in 93Jamz.

That said, WEZL is ripe to fall, but not at the hands of a company that's tried for 10-15 years, and not at the hands of a PD who's tried for three. And the rumors that the air staff will move from NKT to the Wolf....make absolutely no sense. Are they winning now? Are they even competitive? And yet you keep the team intact?

The brain trust continues to astound.

[EDIT]That short paragraph. Also if Citadel wanted to keep Cat Country in Charleston once 107.5 moves wouldn't they of just simulcast Cat Country on 96.9. But I think with Sunny flipping to 96.9 The Wolf Citadel wants to keep Cat Country around on 107.5 once they move and compete with Clear Channel's country station on 97.5 in Columbia. I think it all makes sense.

As for Citadel doing a good job with Country in Charleston. Would Apex do a good job? If they wanted to they could of flipped 96.1 to Country instead of Chuck if they knew 107.5 was moving. Then maybe Citadel wouldn't of flipped Sunny maybe. But I don't think Apex wants to program a country station.

[EDIT-unauthorized promotion of a commercial site.]

Country on 107.5 Eastover/Columbia is a possibility. I wouldn't be putting any money down on that.

My guess is that it will be a format that dovetails nicely with the 35+ adult thing that Citadel Columbia has going on in the cluster right now. And, more importantly, won't harm WTCB.

Is it OFFICIAL that the company that owns MAGIC 101.7 will actually move the Urban AC format to 107.3 or format flip??? Who will own the 101.7 spot once they move, Apex???

It will be Apex and it will involve a flip between Myrtle Beach and Charlteston and no one yet knows what the format will be.

wwwwwwwwwwwowwwwwwwwww WEZL gone........the cc program geniuses allowed themselves to be outflanked by citadel.......

Just put the WEZL stream on off their website and they are playing country music. Who says they are going to flip? Charleston needs two country stations. Nothing wrong with some competion. I think The Wolf will win as Clear Channel may fire some jocks at WEZL and other Charleston stations. Just look at the house cleaning at Clear Channel's WLTW New York and now at KOST in LA. Its a huge mess.

WEZL is a main stay in Charleston much like WCOS is to Columbia. It seems looking at country music stations at least in this area of South Carolina (haven't checked everywhere else yet) and country music in general is in trouble, rattings droping off, country music formats being moved to smaller stations or fliped (WHLZ from 92.5 to 100.5, Augusta's The Bull moved from 105.7 to 102.3, WNKT 107.5 flip to sports talk). I wonder if this is a national trend or just local. If WEZL was to flip formats this would not be a very good sign.

Something interesting is that the MD of 96Wave.com has left for "bigger things". Read that off of AllAccess today too. But I doubt it has anything to do with 96.9

rollins went to wrff in philly

WHLZ moved to 100.5 in Florence because the 92.5 signal was moved into Charleston so that actually means WHLZ stayed alive because of its popularity in Florence.

The Bull in Augusta was a classic country station so the downgrade in signal does not mean bad things for country music.

WEZL is not switching away from country

WEZL isnt going anyplace. Its a beast of a country station. I enjoy TJ & Gary in the mornings. Because of them I actually know some country music artists now. 2 years ago I didnt know Toby Keith from Billy Ray Cyrus. But their fun and compelling morning show kept me listening at work and made me actually like some of that music that I swore Id never listen too!

Which leads to the question 'does air talent actually make a difference?' In this case, my case, as a listener, yes. Without those guys, I wouldn't have been introduced too and enjoying Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, The Wreckers, Rascall Flatts, Keith Urban, ect..

I also enjoy the Saturday morning interview show. Nothing else like it on radio around here. Not much else like it on radio anywhere.
