Song of the Decade

What was the song of the 90s? 80s? Are these songs still memorable to this day?

I don't believe that Billboard compiled decade-end charts for the 80s or 90s. If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on these (just on the number of weeks they spent atop the Billboard 100):

1990s: One Sweet Day - Mariah Scary feat. Boyz II Never-Heard-From-Again (16 weeks #1)

1980s: Betty Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (10 weeks #1)

1970s: You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone (10 weeks #1)

As the first decade of the 21st century fades, in your opinion, what was the song of the decade? There are have been a lot of songs that have stayed atop the Hot 100 chart for many a week but what song would you crown as #1 for 2000-2009?

"We Belong Together," "Yeah, Yeah Yeah," "Maria, Maria," "Baby Boy" "Boom Boom Pow"? The list goes on......

My vote: Eminem - Lose Yourself

Everyone should have their opinion...but if that's the best of your favorites (for a decade yet)......"Lose yourself" ...your just a prime example while were losing this country. Or you lost touch with reality. No wonder there's no jobs. Just keep wearing those baggy pants with the cap on backwards ....and wouldn't surprise one bit anymore if you become chairman for a corporation. Now I'm really wondering who I'm conversing with this on these boards.

Whoa! That's just wrong.
The guy gave his opinion, his honest answer, and you're not only mocking him but also blaming him for everything that's wrong with this country???
Did he work at Lehman brothers? Did he spike the price of gas? Did he inflate real estate prices? Did he cause us to go to war with Afghanistan?

No, he's just a guy who happened to love Eminem's "Lose Yourself", a song which won an Emmy. There could be a lot of reasons why he picked that song - perhaps it motivated him in life, perhaps it reminds him of his first job or his first serious relationship or of his college days, or maybe his favorite radio station.

Mr. Charles In Charge....it's appalling when you see, not such a great decade of music or hit songs in the first place...and then on top of that...somebody picking out the lowest form from the bottom of the decade. I call it a dumming down recording, but never stated that he has ruined the country. It just makes me wonder.
I'm just comparing that to everything else that came out in this decade...out of all songs the last 10 years ..."Lose Yourself"?
And your telling me that song won an Emmy? Where on MTV? Jerry Springer awards?
That song did not receive great airplay, or great chart statistics. Especially compared to his early recordings. It received some airplay then faded quickly. It was a song for 11th grade graduates. That's about it.

Sorry, I meant to write that he won TWO grammy awards, and an Academy Award.

Eminem is considered one of the best rappers not just of the past decade but of alltime. The song topped the charts in 24 countries, and is considered one of the most successful of its genre of alltime. 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the Australian singles chart. Furthermore, it topped the charts in the UK, and all over Europe. It remains a staple at many sports games.

You said the song didnt receive significant airplay??? Well, this is the CHR board, and the song went to number on CHR/Pop and CHR/Rhythm.

Again, let me remind you that this is the CHR board. So if you were hoping to see a Death Cab For Cutie or Radiohead song nominated by most of the posters on here your expectations were offbase. People on this forum enjoy Pop music in its many forms and that includes Rap music. I don't know why it's so hard for some people (aka music snobs) to deal with.

Whats so wrong with Eminems Loose yourself,,, im not taking sides, though chrles is usually right, he has a good point... I dont think its the best song of this decade, but it sure isnt a bad one. The song isnt about ballin Drugs.. or,,, b...tches and hoes,,, its about doing your best to get out of a bad situation,,, so whats so wrong with it....

Has he won a TONY also? Purlitzer Prize?

To win more awards and have Lose Yourself as the best song of the decade (I can understand your opinion in just the rap category) just shows you that the next generation's head is in a toilet. No wonder China and India is kicking our butts when it comes to intelligence.

I know what CHR means...I've worked a CHR station....except the difference was people played there on instruments and sang and hit the notes...without losing themselves. Come on ...let me hear you Just Lose Yourself...ugggh uugggh uugggh uggggh uggghh....Nice hook, catchy tune, great to dance to, I rate it below a moron. Plus I don't recall that song getting past the 30's on the R&R CHR chart.

Again, let me remind you that this is the CHR board. So if you were hoping to see a Death Cab For Cutie or Radiohead song nominated by most of the posters on here your expectations were offbase. And you just answered my question on why the music and radio industry has hit new lows....the past 15 years. Except for a few baggy pants, hats on backwards people attending Reality TV University, ...your the only ones that would listen to something like that.

Starbucks, my friend, you have two Eminem songs all mixed up.
This is "Lose Yourself"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgg04EekxIc

And this is "Just Lose It"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEE2ZGJC-_E

And you mentioned India and China? Are you kidding me? Have you ever listened to Canto-Pop or Bollywood music? Hows that more intelligent?

Here's a modern sounding From the 90s hit for Apache Indian with "Arranged Marriage"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bVNMHkW8Hk

And Chinese pop ballads all sound like Air Supply songs from the early 80s. Case in point Faye Wong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8CQxuLRmuo

When did you work in CHR? What station was it? I love CHR radio from different decades. Maybe I can even look up old playlists for you.

I hate the whole bollywood scene, and it makes me sick to see this Hindu crap all the time on Americas got tallent, and Randy jacksons dance show all the time.... It is such crap. I fear greatly that kids are gonna start getting into this. The dancing may be impressivve but the music is just crap, why dont they ever wear shoes.....

LOL....Shows you how much I'm a Eminem fan. I remember vaguely on the tune that guy was referring to. When i get time after dinner, I'll check out the you tube link. It can't be worse then the one I thought he voted for as song of the decade. I was getting worried there. I was refering to the Chinese and Indians as far as mentality goes...not for their taste in music. I never listen to Bally, or China pop, all I know is my past Asian girlfriends listen to AC (American Pop).

Actually the song of the 80's was: The Police, "Every breathe you take"
and the 90s, 2 choices: Donna Lewis, "I love you always forever" 12 weeks at #1, or Natalie Imbruglia, "Torn"

I too think Usher's Yeah should be the song of the decade, but who knows. I havent sat down to calcuate the top songs of the decade yet...soon though..

Since it obtained a whopping two weeks of airplay on format leader Z-100/New York, I think I'll vote for "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand as the song of the decade!

I vote "Yeah" by Usher and "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey as a close second place, both were big hits, one a feel good jam/club banger, one a slow jam/r&b track.

Yes, I must agree by default with "Yeah" by Usher. Although I kind of regret having to live through this past decade in music, I will say "yeah" was definitely a very well made production. Very simple, yet bright, colorful, and exciting melody.

"Hey ya" was good too, but it's one of those type of songs that after a while sometimes it's like "you're playing that???" Usher's "yeah" however, never has a "bad time" or "burned out" sound.

This next decade to come is looking pretty bright...

"In Da Club" by 50 would definitely be a Top 5 of the decade.

I think it's best if we would just forget 50 Cent, and if his shooter had better aim, we would probably have done just that! LOL

This is a tough question. The problem is so many of the songs that were great as currents such as "Hey Ya" and many of the others mentioned here are so burned that I have no desire to listen to them. I would much rather hear what's on the CHR chart right now than listen to the biggest hits of the decade. Maybe in about 20 years the big CHR hits from 2000-2009 will sound fresh again.

Well thinking here.... songs that crossed also to Adult CHR and even maybe Hot AC.... songs that should be on that list.

Usher - Yeah
BEP - I Gotta Feeling
Flo Rida/T-Pain - Low
Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody
Outkast - Hey Ya!
Kanye West - Stronger
Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous

how's that for starters?

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day ! Huge on Pop, Hot AC, Active Rock, Rock, Alternative, AAA
I know they borrowed from Aerosmith, Oasis, and whoever else but I think it's the best song of the decade.

I would say that was the best rock crossover song of the decade....a great comeback hit for them! Just when I thought Green Day would never have another CHR hit again, they had one go to #1.

Fall Out Boy "Sugar We're Going Down" & Panic! At The Disco "I Write Sins...." would also be up there for best rock songs at CHR this decade.

My top 3:

1- "Yeah" - Usher/Luda/Lil Jon

2- "Hey Ya!" - Outkast

3- "Crazy" - Gnarles Barkley

...and I haven't seen anyone mention "In Da Club" by 50 yet... I think that should be somewhere in the top 10.

"I Gotta Feeling" would be a GREAT song to drop at 11:55 pm on December 31st... sort of a neat way to say goodbye to the "00"'s.

"Crazy" - Gnarles Barkley

I have completely forgotten about this song. It seems like I have not heard it in several months. It is really weird how that happens with music.
