Songs You Didn't Imagine To Hear On A CHR

Black and Yellow - Wiz Khalifa
Bottoms Up - Trey Songz feat. Nicki Minaj
No Love - Lil Wayne and Eminem

At first I was surpise to hear this songs on CHR because they are more on the hip hop side. So you would think that these songs should just be on a Urban formated station. What do you guys think?

Some CHR's playing these songs:
KISS 95.1 - Charlotte, NC
95.1 sx - Charleston, SC
Mix 97.7 - Myrtle Beach, SC

Is Z100 playing "Bottoms Up"? I don't see it in their playlist.

Mumford & Sons-Little Lion Man
Q92 in Canton played it
Also:
Neon Trees-Animal (just because the lack of Rock on CHR stations as of this year I was suprised any Rock was played)
Wiz Khlafia's Black & Yellow very surpised I knew who he was last year
The Script-Breakeven/Man Who Can't Be Moved (I knew them in 2007 when they first crossed over into the states)
Bottom's Up is on Z100's playlist I just heard them in the car today play it.
Sarah Barallis anything from her.
Gym Class Heroes (too odd to hear on a CHR at the time happy they did play them at the time)
Kings of Leon (suprised cuz very indie sounding)
Zac Brown Band (idk if any played them)
Rascal Flatts
Evanescence (it's a bit too hardcore for CHR personally)
Green Day (their older stuff I was suprised now)
Coldplay (a bit too slow for CHR Imagine going to one of their concerts, it's like paying $100 bucks to take a 2 hour nap!) I still like their music it's just they're boring.
No Doubt

Z100 actually isn't playing Bottoms Up (more than 5x a week anyway), cause it's nowhere on their Top 50 playlist - surprised cause it's #13 nationwide

I really like it when CHRs take risks with new crossover songs, like WFLZ/Tampa is right now with Paper Tongues/Get Higher, and KBKS/Seattle did with Linkin Park/Waiting For The End

I don't know about Z100 and Bottoms Up, I know they played "Say Aah" for a very very short time, but they didnt add it until after it was already dropping on CHR, and it never made it past 20 spins a week.

I don't think Z100 plays Bottoms up, I don't see it anywhere in their Top 100 songs, but XCountry285 said he heard it so I guess they played it at least once. Do you know what time it was they played it XCountry?

A song Im surprised CHR is playing.

"Waka Flocka Flame - No Hands"

Hot 99.5 in Washington, D.C. is leading this out of every CHR at nearly 60 spins a week, which shocks me because Hot 99.5 is always very cautious about adding Urban songs to their playlist. They usually won't do it until a crossover at least gets to about #30 on the CHR charts.

Surprisingly, KIIS (nor is AMP, Power 106, and probably most, if not all the west coast hip-hop stations) isn't playing Waka Flocka Flame. I would think they would be on it since knowing they play "Black and Yellow"...

neither or those songs are crossovers by any means they're on the charts and it's not a risk it's what they're supposed to do. Play the HITS! Play Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Country, Dance, whatever else you can think of on the station. Yes I did say country (Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Lady Antebellium, Rascal Flatts-hate to burst everyone's bubble-They're Country!)

Last I checked, Sugarland and Rascal Flatts never made hits that have crossed over to CHR. Lady Antebellum only made one hit that went to CHR, that's "Need You Now". If you're going to combine country music (and I mean country that doesn't crossover to CHR) with a CHR format then expect that to fail.

^What Hurts The Most by Rascal Flatts definitely crossed over to CHR

Sugarland is getting a bunch of unsolicited pop airplay for Stuck Like Glue - I think it's going for pop adds in the next couple months, but not sure

Who could ever forget I Can Only Imagine by Mercyme?

Yeah back when I lived there, Kiss 95.1/Charlotte had it in POWER ROTATION for months - pretty sure it was one of their Top 10 songs of that year

WFLY in Albany was more of a CHR/Rock or Hot AC for like four years (around 2005 to 2009)... I remember hearing stuff like The Postal Service (in 2005) and Avenged Sevenfold (in 2008/9) on that station... also some country like Martina McBride's "This One's for The Girls" (also in 2005, I don't even think that ever charted on the CHR/Mainstream chart) ;)

If WFLY really played Avenged Sevenfold, I seriously doubt it was any kind of Hot AC - and can't believe even a rock-leaning CHR would play that stuff (it doesn't appeal to females at all)

Which stations played them?

What Hurts The Most by Rascal Flatts peaked at #24 CHR, and spent 21 weeks on the chart, so I'm guessing at least half the CHR panel played it

As far as specific stations, I was living in North Carolina then, so I know that WNKS/Charlotte, WKZL/Greensboro, and WDCG/Raleigh were all big supporters - as far as major market stations, I'm guessing probably just Kiss Dallas, KRBE, Star 94, and Q100 (those are guesses though) - I'm sure it was bigger in Southern, Midwestern, and rural markets

I was about to say the same thing about Kiss 95.1/Charlotte. That was a surprise a) because of the tempo, b) because it was a Christian crossover. Don't get me wrong, I think it was a great song...just surprised that it worked so well for a few CHRs. On a related Christian crossover ballad topic, anyone remember 1997's Bob Carlisle "Butterfly Kisses"? Didn't have the callout success that MercyMe had at some stations, but I look back and say how did that song reach #15 on the CHR chart?

Some CHR's playing these songs:
KISS 95.1 - Charlotte, NC

Mix 97.7 - Myrtle Beach, SC

Here in Charlotte, our Rhythmic just flipped to standard CHR but seems to be leaning more rock heavy, and our urban is geared more towards females and older listeners (plays more R&B and old school hip-hop than current hip hop), so it makes sense Kiss 95.1 is moving slightly more rhythmic to pick up the listeners abandoned by Channel 96.1 (The Beat). Kiss 95.1 here in Charlotte sounds very similar to KISS-XM on satellite radio, which might as well be a rhythmic.

It seems like all of the stations playing Black & Yellow are very rhythmic leaning (to the point were it really doesn't make since that they're on the CHR panel). Same goes for "No Hands", "Buzzin", "Deuces"......the CHR chart is being heavily skewed by rhythmics disguised as CHRs
