SONGS YOU'D LOVE TO HEAR ON KRTH-FM!

Hi oldies76. Do we actually know how many songs are being tested? I'm sure many more songs are being sampled at the AMT's, but the ones that pass are what Jhani Kaye plays. I wonder if the extras are songs that were marginal and played for what a friend of mine calls flavor. I feel that the PD's at CBS-FM and K-Earth are tailoring the sound of these stations to their markets for the most part. It seems to me that WCBS was always more eclectic in it music choices. For many years KRTH had a super tight playlist because they still had KRLA as competition. KRLA was aimed at more of the "Hispanic/born in LA" audience with KRTH being a more Anglo leaning station. Of course this doesn't apply now. Remember this, Doo Wop was popular much longer in NY than it ever was in LA, so there's a whole segment of music that saw very little play in LA. I wish I had a definitive answer for you. As to how they're testing, my guess would be AMT's. AKA Auditorium Music Tests. They bring in a group of people representing the station's demos and play 8 second song hooks that the audience rates. These people are not told what station they are testing for and the lists are usually made up of music that the PD comes up with. I've been at stations where the PD actually would ask the staff to contribute song titles to be included. Unless someone from KRTH or CBS would like to post, I have no way of knowing for sure...

Every single song on the air has been tested and has a score that the stations work from.
It's hard to make music determinations based on what the stations used to do...neither Jhani nor Brian were in the mix in those days, and each has put his own spin on the stations. Jhani actually has a deeper list than Mike Phillips did a decade ago...while Brian has a smaller list than Joe McCoy did then. So it's all in how you perceive it.

DavidEduardo Please tell us how you can see MedaBase reports... just days ago, you did not even know it existed and still, I think, do not understand how the service monitors stations.

Thanks for the insight...I guess this would sum it up..we'll just leave it at that.

So, to do any tabulations, you have to count manually the songs and determine which are in the non-specialty show times, etc.

That's a MediaBase report for one station, without the sort and history and comparison features. Still, you see that MediaBase reflects nearly perfectly every song played.
