Sony=Manufacturing Defects

This is just a heads up.

Audio Tapes:

Tords the end of last year I bought a pack of Sony HF 90s. I had 2 of them just flat out bust at the end of the recording. Its not my tape recorder because it doesn't do that with any other brand and another Sony tape broke in another tape recorder of mine which also doesn't have any problems.

I have also had many other countless problems with Sony within the past 4 years including jamming and tape breaking off of the wheel for no apparent reason. An added "hiss" in the recording is also another problem with Sony.

Video Tapes:

I bought 2 to record the end of Newsworld International. Both tapes were broken mechanicaly (the tape was ok but the wheels were busted) One tape worked, the other my VCR spit it out.

I went yesterday to buy a new tape. Also a Sony. Found that the store I got it at replaced all of the ones that the ones I got was part of with a new shipment. Shelling and wheels seem ok. Tords the middle of the tape I heard a squeeky noise coming from the VCR. It went away after awhile. I went back to play the tape and found the part where it was squeeking came out with blurred picture and sound.

I'm going to stick with TDK and Maxell for video from now on. TDK for audio. I'd recommend everybody else do the same.<P ID="signature">______________

I've always thought that TDK tapes sounded best... I guess it goes back to the days that I recorded a lot of mixtapes directly from CD's. But...in the past few years since trading radio airchecks I've not noticed too much difference between the brands, except I think RCA tapes have more hiss than others.

I stick to TDK 1st then Maxell tapes for airchecking (whichever is on sale or has the best price). However, most of the time now I record directly to mp3 or .wav on computer, or MD's.

I haven't had any brand of tapes break in my equipment recently though. I did get rid of that slow recording Sony tape deck I had Jeremy. LoL

Thank You to the recent aircheck posters. All the airchecks were great. I'll post more soon.

I was using Maxell mostly because they were the cheapest (3.99 at Walgreens for a 5 pack)

I decided to try TDK (6.99 at Walgreens for a 10 Pack) and found TDK to be WAY better then Maxell. If you compare the 2, you'll instantly notice the difference.

So noow I'm willing to pay more for TDK. Sometimes the 10 packs go on sale at Walgreens for $4.99

By the way, all the airchecks I post here were originally recorded on tape.

I still think maxell are the best...I have had TDK's get stuck in my walkman and the sound on them is horrible...I like to use maxell UR 90 or XL 90.

I haven't noticed much of a difference between TDK and Maxell, but I'm with Jeremy, I get my tapes at Walgreens (it's two blocks away!) And they usually have TDKs and are usually out of Maxells. Nothing's given me a problem (yet!).

Guys,
I am not picky on which brand is used. I could care less. Most of the time I trade for archived recordings. For those that I collect currents from, most people don't have good enough equipment to make it worse while buying good cassettes.
Honestly, I don't even know of one person that I regularly trade with that has expensive gear, and nor do I know of anyoen that I trade with that sets there recording level on the lower side as aposed to so hot. No offense and I'm happy with what I'vv gotten tthus far from all of you here, its just my opservations. I feel however that the best brand of tape for recording good quoloty on my sony boombox as currents for myself, and on my Denon DN-770R cassette deck is Kingdom Supreme Plus Trademark cassettes. I use strictly 120-minute cassettes, and have only had one break on my boombox, the WSTW one, go figgure! LOL

I use Phillips Magnavox tape recorders. I find that they are the best for quality recording regardless of the tape used. When I record airchecks onto TDK using my Magnavox stereo that I got 3 years ago, I can't tell that the tape is a tape. It sounds just as good as it did when it was on the radio.

Re: TDK

About three or four years ago, I heard that there was a sharp decline in the sound quality of TDK. I had many blank TDK tapes bought in 1996 and I was told that they were the best of any, but about five years later they did not sound good and Maxell was a better sounding tape.

I am not that picky on sound. I don't like hiss, but I am not picky about other sounds. I have not heard a difference on TDK between the old and new tapes.

Has anyone else heard this about TDK?

I had problems with the TDKs I bought at Target in 2002 and 2003. No problems with TDKs elsewere. There was sound quality issues and bad jamming problems.

The new TDKs (In red packaging) work better then any other tapes I have bought.

Sony: Hiss and tape breaking off the wheel
Maxell: OK but compared to TDK, AWFUL sound quality.
TDK: The current ones work very well.
RCA: Problems with dropouts. Its improved but its still there.

This is true with my Denon as well.
It sounds excelent. and if only everyone had these excelent sounding units, people (in the public) wouldn't think casettes were so horible. Of corse, getting good sounding units = more $$$, and to me that is verry impootant, so I spend whatever it costs.

Re: TDK

No, I haven't.
However, I found that Kingdom makes the best cassettes. I found they sound the best on my sony boombox. TDK sounds good, but not as good. Kingdom is higher and lower freq responce and doesn't sound as hot as the other brandd do, especially on recorders (such as my boombox), where it has an automatic set recording level that can't be changed manually.
