Sophie for Sale?

If anybody read the front page of today's (Sat 8/2/08) front page on R-I, it seems that "medium market" for CBS is whatever they decide to sell, and that KDKA and San Diego may be on the block. Perhaps CBS should re-state their remarks to make it more clear. Or is San Diego a "medium" market? And here I was thinking San Diego was a "major" market.
Can anyone shed some light on this? What am I missing here?

I've wondered about that too: I think that being in the top 20 markets alone is not enough to qualify as a "major market" and San Diego has never felt like major market radio when working in it, more like big small market radio. Sophie would be a good candidate to sell since CBS has never had clue about making it work.

KyXy and Radio Sophie are not on the official list. Of course, the official list is like the 23 flavors in Dr Pepper. A secret.

KyXy has more high fructose corn syrup.

As it turns out, the entire CBS San Diego cluster might be for sale...

A quote from today's Tom Taylor newsletter:

"... One savant says "Dan Mason says that in markets where they don't have four or five FMs, they will be sellers." They want a big presence in a market."

CBS owns just two stations in this market. Hmmm...

By the way, last week, they announced the sale of "fifty" mid-sized market stations. The number of stations below Market 20 just happens to equal 50. Now, if you take the number of stations below Market 20 vs. the number of stations in markets with three or less FM's, the number goes from 50 to 41.

Here's the fuzzy math:
Atlanta (3) + Denver (3) + Hartford (4) + Minneapolis (3) + New York (6) + Orlando (3) + Palm Springs (1) + Philadelphia (5) + Phoenix (3) + Riverside (4) + San Diego (2) + St. Louis (3) = 41

(Yes, I think CBS would be crazy to sell their New York and Philly properties, too!)

el Las Vegas too. that group has been thrown out to the wolves. Sorry, I meant thrown out as for sale.

Sophie is a terrible radio station they play the same songs over and over and over ect.

But I thought CBS radio was interested in buying the Lincoin Finacial Media properteys, if Im correct.

I like the analogy!! That's funny.
I (of course) prefer the non-cafinated version! ;D

KYXY has survived a lot of owners and program directors over the years, so it could survive another change. However I feel sorry for Sam Bass: when I was working at The Planet, they went through one of the many changes, from AM-FM to Infinity or some such thing - Sam's comment was that "Everytime we get sold, my pay goes down." I have no doubt that more than a joke: new owners always have to "tighten the belt" (someone else's belt, not theirs) in order to pay for their over-priced purchase.

Could Saga or Sandusky purchase the San Diego cluster?I heard that Saga is interested in purchasing some the CBS clusters.

Clear Channel just re-built 2 studios in their building, one of them was the old La Preciosa 99.3. Maybe they are gearing up for KyXy and KSCF to move over?

They can't add stations to the cluster.

No but they can subtract and then add, 95.7 and 105.3's signals are terrible compared to 103.7 and 96.5

Goo observation, but CCU seems to be in selling mode, not buying. It does make sense to get the better signals, though

Plus remember David who is the market GM of CC San Diego? And who was it that ran the CBS stations in Sd until a couple of years ago?? One Bob Bolinger! Who else knows those stations potential better than Bob? Think of it Rock 103.7 instead of 105.3! And KyXy Bob will leave it alone and watch the money POUR in !

I disagree. Having better content wins. Signals, while important don't mean a hill of $$ unless there is content to grab listeners ears. 1170 KCBQ has a fine signal; but is near the bottom of the ratings heap.

For those knocking the Walrus' coverage. It's doing good for being out of the gate; the real test is in six months, a year .... two years .... etc., etc.

Chris you take the 105.3 format and stick it on the 103.7 signal (which is far superior), and then there is no loosing format that CC is stuck with.

All I know is that one of the rebuilt studios is even outfitted with an EAS box, which means it is a legal on-air control room. And there are open rack spaces there for the transmitter remote.

Could be interesting; but it is disturbing to see a company pick and choose what signals to have. Didn't CCU's former division (Jacor or AMFM) have KyXy and KPLN at one time -- even if it was for a day? It may be when Nationwide splintered of KCEO AM 1000 in a deal; with 96.5 and 103.7 in a triangle move to satisfy FCC regs.

Regardless, your point is taken and it remains a "stay tuned" item.

Thanks for the input.

Adding to the CBS/Lincoln intrigue is that today it was announced the "proven winner" now running SOFIE has been given PD stockings at ALICE/SF. Sounds to me like a northern move for Ms. Fruge' is coming soon. As soon as CBS spins off SOFIE and KYXY to.....who??

I believe this is the first time CBS as ever had a single PD "running" two stations in different cities.

Anybody have any thoughts?

In a report on R&R online today Ms. Fruge says "she is honored to have been given the opportunity to run two of the most unique and important radio stations in the country!" I'm sorry, but is she kidding? Unique and Important? In the country? Am I missing something here?
