Source: Merlin To Flip WRXP To News/Talk

News/talk on FM finally coming to market #1? I actually approve of this... figured it'd land on 101.9 or 105.1 (although I doubt CC would flip Power just to launch a Rush Radio station) :)

Is this a Hot Talk (similar to Free FM or Real Radio) or a political talk station, though?

News talk seems like a logical outcome, but maybe Randy will take a second look at the numbers and see that well programmed alternative stations are actually performing well in some major markets now...check LA and Houston for example. Active rock is headed down the tubes, but alternative does a better job of drawing an evenly balanced male/female audience in some very desirable demos. I've been listening to 'RXP quite a bit online recently (terrible stream, BTW), and it seems to me that there's a lot of room for improvement, by positioning the station more in an alternative direction and freshening/upgrading the overall imaging. Many of you will say "dream on", but to me it would be crazy to pull NYC's only contemporary rock station off the air without first seeing if there isn't an effective way of building on its existing listenership. The situation in Chi-town seems to be different.

... Maybe they decide [sic] to stream WRXP or put it on HD a little longer until September 16 or longer. So 101.9 can flip earlier to talk or whatever the plans are.

With the deal expected to close within six weeks or so, I'd look at an August 1 flip date... or better yet, August 2, the day Z-100 came to town... But I certainly don't see 101.9 holding out until into the fall, just so they can honor this big concert that they were able to put together as WRXP. Not to say such promotions for online-only stations don't work - look at the HFStival in D.C. They've once again started to have the annual music festival over there, even though HFS has been an online-only rock station for the last several years.

The unfortunate news if RXP flips to news/talk: many hard-working, well-meaning, honest people will lose their jobs.

The good news: Fram - FIRED.

Drelio and Cameron - SALARIES SLASHED BY 1/3.

Lesson - INCOMPETENCE AND ARROGANCE WILL EVENTUALLY CATCH UP WITH YOU.

101.9 I hear could go country on radio-insight.com. I sometimes do listen to 101.9 but they're stations so unlistenable, it's crap. I am sure that they are trying hard though to make it sound good. It's just too all over the place. I try and pull in 105.5 WDHA but that sometimes fades in and out with 105.5 WDBY-FM in Kingston, NY. Sometimes if I'm lucky I can get WRRV out of Middletown. I would like a country station here though. I just feel we don't need 2 A/C's bring 102.7 back to rock or alternative. or even try PLJ to flip to rock/alternative.

102.7 should go Classic Rock or Alternative, yes... doubt 92.3 will go back to K-Rock at this point. 101.9 should go country if you ask me, but my hunch is still on news/talk...

CC probably won't flip any of their stations to sports (remember that Power is a flanker for Hot 97, and flipping that to sports would spell trouble) :)

The website radioinsight states that Merlin Media has registered 1019WYNY.com.
But they indicate that they do not think that the WYNY callsign, used by the previous 2 country stations in the New York area, is a harbinger that WRXP will flip to country. They still believe it will go to some sort of talk format.

If WRXP flips to country I will most definitely listen. If they flip to anything else, especially talk, I most certainly will not. Since this is the NY radio market I would almost expect a flip to spanish talk...with a rhythmic backround beat ::)

One solution to the flip to talk and the upcoming concert:

Just as NJ 101.5 and the Orlando station, 101.9 could keep its music format from Friday evenings through Sunday.

Talk during the week, adult rock music on the weekend. Keep the concert.

It would work.

@WGLI: Wasn't it Joel Hollander that signed off on the big "Free FM" idea, and not so much Chernoff?

Yes, but Chernoff was PD when it started. He was sent over to "handle" DLR like he "handled" Imus and Francessa. Basically, knee pad programming.

Since Walter Sabo left NJ101.5 WKXW FM radio they have had a significant drop in their M/S/U PPM numbers. Apparently the current weak management did need Sabo to guide them.

I along with many look forward to Walter Sabo working his magic again at Merlin Media. Not small time Trenton, Not Philly, Not worthless or spineless - New York and Sabo perfect together.

Weak PD's have no where to hide from PPM, Walter is the established expert on PPM and News/Talk.

Radio is a business, not a hobby.

You already know that Randy Michaels and Co. are buying WRXP and two other stations in Chicago from Jeff Smulyan and the gang at Emmis.

Now, one source is speculating that, upon acquisition, WRXP will flip to a news/talk, if not an FM talk, format.

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowl...ds-wrxp-to-randy-michaels-merlin-media_b38133

Next thing you know, he'll hire Kevin Metheny as the program director.

Yes.

That.

Kevin.

Metheny.

If Michaels wants to continue tweaking Rob Feder and other people in Chicago, I would suspect that he would hire Pig Virus for Q101 and not inflict him on the folks in New York (and IIRC, Walt Sabo will also be based in Chicago for Merlin).

IMHO, if WRXP is indeed going news/talk, I doubt it will sound anything like 92.3 FREE-FM or 102.7 FM Talk. The model to follow would be WTOP DC, KTAR-FM Phoenix and KIRO-FM Seattle, news and news/talk stations Bonneville successfully migrated to FM.

I've listened to KTAR-FM Phoenix and KIRO-FM Seattle online and while they don't shy away from politics, they are also very entertaining. Infotainment, anyone? KTAR-FM and KIRO-FM are the go-to stations in Phoenix and Seattle when a major news story breaks in those markets. Both stations have substantial local programming.

The FM Talk tsunami might soon be coming to New York! :)

i"m gonna put down $2 and say cc flips 105.1 before labor day to fm talk
Either that or Fox Sports... but remember if CC flips 105.1, they could risk Lite FM going down too (remember 105.1 is a flanker for Hot 97, like I've previously mentioned)... however, they could add some of Power's stuff to WKTU if they wanted...
