Sources: New 92.3 Calls Are WNOW

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article from Rolling Stone about the K-Rock format change, which contained a reference to 92.3's call letters being WNOW.

Today, a second source - The New York Examiner - reports that 92.3 WXRK call letters are "gone... in favor of the easy to remember WNOW":

Yet, according to the FCC database, the calls are still licensed to Gaffney Broadcasting of South Carolina:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?stat...&slat2=&NS=N&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&EW=W&size=9

Can someone tune into 92.3 (or WFAN) to see if there's a change in the TOH ID?

WNOW is a Spanish station in (or targeted to, rather) the Charlotte area....The ones running the Spanish format on 105.3 (WNOW) operate under LMA....but they somehow got Gaffney Broadcasting who owns the signal to change the calls for them because they actually OWN WNOW-AM in Charlotte. I think it's a lease-purchase type thing.

Am I making any sense?

I KNEW IT!!!!! :D :D :D

Scroll down a bit and you'll find what I posted! (3rd one)

They could always buy the WNOW calls, which currently belongs to a Spanish station in Gaffney, SC (outside of Charlotte) .

Actually that would make the most sense. Clear Channel purchased "WKTU" from a country station near Atlantic City so I could see CBS spending the money. But more importantly, the company that runs this station would take it! WPOD is available and matches up well with their identifier "Poder 105.3"

I would have preferred 92.3 to be called Amp 92.3. Maybe it's because I like that certain energy drink and the station in LA reminds me of that.

KAMP is a high school station in Alaska, it would be pocket change for CBS Radio to buy those call letters, and the money would benefit the school a lot. WAMP is a religious station in Tennessee. Again, they would give up the WAMP calls cheaply.

But call letters these days are as insignificant to the average person as the license plate number of the PD's car.

I have an HD radio. As of 10:30 AM on Saturday March 14, the read out still says WXRK. On the bottom it says 92.3 NOW-FM.

I hope 92.3 kicks Z100's butt! Z100 has been resting on it's CHR King's throne long enough. The competition should scare the heck out of them. It will probably take a few Arb books to knock Z100 down a few notches. ;D

It will prolly hurt Hot and Power also.

DIRECT HIT:
Z-100, 'BLI (on a somewhat lesser scale but still direct)

INDIRECT HIT:
Hot 97, Power 105.1, 'KTU (smaller scale but indirect)

SPIKE:
Q-104, and IF 'RXP does actually pay attention and start leaning on the old K-Rock format. Be lucky people aren't running to the stores buying HD radio units. :(

And I have listened to 92.3 more than I listened to 87.7 this week. But I intend to change that soon.

Let's not forget the Jersey Shore's side of the competition:

Hit 106, 94.3 The Point (they might as well be considered a CHR even if they don't spin hip hop) and PST are the big targets. This is where the CHR overload lives, at least for Long Island, it's not much of a Top 40 congestion.

See?
And we thought Top 40 was done... LOL

Which makes me wonder aloud, with all this Top 40 in Market #1, will that start a trend around the country?
This could be very good for radio!

(psst, and by "Top 40," I mean "Mainstream CHR," because in truth, all radio is Top 40 when you get down to it).

Some posters are finding more and more creative ways to spin any topic into a "NYC needs a country station" thread. It's not happening!

Just curious...why do they need to be knocked down a few notches? Do you feel they haven't done a nice job wth the format or do you just not like people to be successful? Personally I like to see quality people who do quality work do well.

The link for the 92.3 Now FM stream works with the calls "WNOW" just change the calls at the end of the link to WNOW. Guess this is another sign to show that CBS Radio owns the calls.

Sir,

I just tried 5 different call letters at the end of that link and they ALL redirected to NowFM. Which leads me to believe that the end of that link means nothing.

Cheers.
