Sox Radio Network only 'RKO or 'EEI for Series

Sox radio for the Series

I think it would be unlikely for non ESPN stations to have access to the World Series broadcasts, especially in markets where there is all ready an ESPN affiliate.

WRONG! All Red Sox radio affiliates outside Boston will be allowed to carry the ESPN Radio broadcast. WTIC-1080 out of Hartford did that in 2004 and will do so again this year.

If you live in Connecticut or western Massachusetts tune in 1080 AM for the Sox in the Series.

MLB dictates that only flagship stations carry home team feeds for WS games.

That is correct. The NFL has a similar policy for conference championship games and the Super Bowl.

BTW, WEEI-850 will have Boston College football (#2 in this week's polls) at Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

If it's OUTSIDE Boston I assume WBOQ won't have the ESPN (Gloucester based) then. In Boston market.

btw acc. to 38cliches.com WROL will also have their own local broadcast of las medias rojas beisbol...

But if you're in the Springfield area I would think you might be able to pick up WPOP 1410 out of Hartford.

That doesn't matter, since it's a seperate market. I doubt 1410 makes it up to Springfield very well anyway. 1080 is probably the only AM in Hartford that puts a good signal into Springfield.

Yes....the radio-locator map (I know, can't be totally trusted but they give an idea) shows WPOP's
night signal going kind of NE and SW and Springfield is just outside of the "distant" area (though I
have picked up WPOP at work in N. Reading MA)

WTIC's site now confirms it'll have Sox via ESPN during the WS:
"Please note that all of the affiliates on the Red Sox Radio Network must carry the ESPN Radio broadcasts. This is per Major League Baseball. Only the flagship station, WRKO in Boston, can continue to broadcast their regular season broadcast team." http://www.wtic.com
(note: ...add "WEEI" to "WRKO", as in tonight and in game 6)

So I guess this also means if you're up in Burl VT you can hear the ESPN feed on both WCAT 1390
(ESPN affiliate) and WJOY 1230 (Sox network affil.)...for example!

Loved the "you're making my point" reference. It read to me like you were saying they would not air the game. My apologies.

Mr. Lehmann, please tune in to 103.7 tonight so you can hear the game. It will be there if you will.

Will listen to any broadcast to get away from Fox Sports "The Worst Sports Coverage in The World." Fox Sports has the worst announcers and the worst camera angles. Plus WHY do they have to block the pitch count frame on the screen to overlay the speed of the pitch. I want to know the count more than the speed. Who really cares about the speed it is the count that matters. And as I mentioned the camera coverage is always so narrow that most times you cannot see the total action on the field.
So, EEI or RKO will be my choice as I turn down the TV of Fox Sports, "The Worst Coverage in the World." [ with attribution to Keith Olbermann].

Hey Casa, will that work? Won't EEI and RKO be on a 5-7 second delay? (I think that was the case back in 2004, or am I wrong?) ... Well, I guess we will find out tonight.

Correct. WJOY is carrying the ESPN feed of the game -- along with WCAT as an ESPN affiliate. WJOY is also carrying WEEI's pre-game coverage from 7:20pm to 8pm. At least with WJOY, Burlington will be able to hear the game through to its completion without WCAT's horrible automation running commercials in mid-inning and cutting the game off if it goes too late.

A woman on Free Republic said she was disappointed that she tuned to WTIC expecting to hear
the Red Sox Radio Network coverage and got ESPN instead. "We won't be able to hear Joe C.
telling us the Sox have won the world series again". I explained to her about MLB's setup.

I was able to get the ESPN Radio coverage in Western MA. on 105.5 WVEI-FM Easthampton/Springfield.

Now I have to decide if I want to listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver or John Miller (Former Red Sox Radio Play by Play) and Joe Morgan. HMMMMM...

WBOQ 104.9 is indeed carrying the ESPN radio broadcast.

ESPN carried the pregame intro's, the Star Spangled Banner by the BSO (or was it the Pops?), complete with sound of the Vermont National Guard flyover.

I flipped back to the local boys, and while they carried Oh Say Can You See, they were doing keys to the game during Sox PA Announcer Carl Bean's introductions. The national broadcast gave more of a feel of being at Fenway, compared to Boston station.

Yup, and ESPN's play by play is a far cry from what we've become accustomed to on the RSRN. Personally, I find the play by play on ESPN radio to be monotonous and the hosts boring. Especially that sidekick guy. Yecch!

Give me Joe C. any day! ;)

Studio hosts are always background noise, whether it's a local or national broadcast.

As far as Joe C. goes, I think he's a national treasure with all his knowledge. Dump Geffner from the broadcast and I'll be more inclined to listen. He may be a nice person, but he doesn't work as a sox broadcaster.

I'm just glad I can hear the game on FM at 104.9 Gloucester. I've gotten used to sports on FM (specially with the Patriots) and I greatly prefer it.

Update

I was listening to the start of Game 4 this evening (Sunday) on 'RKO.
After the first half inning, a spot came on, and i flipped it to the ESPN broadcast on 104.9 - and it was the same spot. Then the next spot, same on RKO as ESPN.

Next half inning, different spots.

Could this be 104.9 making use of the Red Sox Radio Network's ads? Agreeing to carry the national net, but using local spots when available?

Sounds far-fetched, but I can't think of any other reason for it.

Thoughts?

I have to say that Geffner hasn't done a bad job on this series... or maybe it's just relief from having to hear the Fox guys
Say what you will about Buck and McCarver, Miller and Morgan are so much worse.

Ballgame over! World Series Over! Red Sox win, theeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Red Sox win! Sure to be
a lot of talk/celebration on the local dial
