KOHS

Would I use salmonela laced jalepenos in a delicious slice of humble pie? Never. I want the taste to be pure.

Pattiwacki, Hi hope you're well, maybe one day we can capture you.

Jay

Hi Jayaz/Jayzer! You guys sure did it yesterday-it was great to hear Joe Crummey!
I'll be back today!

Lot's of surprises in the Spring 12+ numbers:

The interesting thing is that KFYI and KTAR-FM are 0.1 apart at 14th (2.6) and 15th, (2.5) and KTAR AM has a 2.5 also. So Bonneville has a collective 5 share on the two KTAR's and KFYI has a 2.6.

25-54 rank 6 mid

KUPD
KQMR
KOOL ( the changes in music and talent seem to have worked marvelously... they were #1 25-54 in June discreet month)
KMXP
KHOT
KSLX
KDKB
KPKX
KESZ
KMLE
KZZP
KYOT
KNIX
Then KFYI, KTAR FM, KTAR.

Thank you David... every one else looks at 12+ ratings... Who gives a damn about 12+!!!

Well, if/until David takes the time to post 25-54 rankings (and I think we all agree that he is very kind to do that!), 12+ is all that many of us have access to.

;D It's so wonderful to see KOOL comin' back! ;D

Congratulations to the Spring 2008 (April 3 - June 25) KOOL Team who made it all happen:
- Tom Peake, Maria Knight, John Michaels, Joe Corrao
- Liz Boyle and Mike Patrick
- Camelback Jack
- Lee Bortel
- Steve Goddard* (for nine of those days)

No more 70's overload like the playlist change in mid-April. There's still plenty (and a lot) of 70's present, but mixed well with the 60's, including a few additions of 60's songs that haven't been played on KOOL for a while. All excellent songs... All songs people know and love, and it's less likely to be burnt-out hearing the same songs every day. I know I notice the slightest things about playlists, but really... right now I think it's excellent.

The morning show that was increasingly getting better, has been doing a fantastic job and maintaining it, for a several months now. If any good things had to come out of bad and unfortunate events (February), the good thing is that out of anyone who could have became the new morning show host, Tom Peake was probably the MOST deserving!

Lee Bortel makes every weekday evening fun and entertaining, and the 70's Saturday Night Splashdown equals fun, kick-back at a party sort of way. Now that everything is in place, things are all-around sounding better than they have in a long time!

We couldn't agree more, KLL! Coo-FM (as BJ Hunter used to say) is firing on all cylinders. In fact Nurse Jeff and I have almost forgotten about that Saturday night disco disaster that preceeded the Pool Party. The CBS cluster has got their mojo workin' in Fenix!

I cannot believe this... The quartely numbers are RANCID!!!

KFYI #1 - It somehow makes me wonder if the illigals have learned english by listening to 5-fifty and have been filling out the books in their stolen Identities...
I wonder if Bonneville has chased away all their listeners, with the exception of 2.2?

Here's another thought... without the illegals... KTAR would have NO listenership.

In all that matters, 25-54, KTAR AM and FM come out the big winner. KFYI is a 2.6, while KTAR FM is a 2.5 and KTAR AM is a 2.5. They now have, over at Bonneville, a nice 5 share 25-54 in the combo!

The 12+ is irrelevant, which is why they give it away.

No offense, but potentially, this is the silliest argument I've ever heard. You are saying that two stations owned by the same company but with completely different formats (albeit same calls) are beating a 'competitor'. Well, la-dee-fricken-da! How about this: ClearChannel combined beats out Bonneville. I mean, what foolishness is that? "KTAR AM and FM beat out KFYI" - one is a sports station, the other is news/talk.

You know who else is beating out KFYI? If you combine CBS Radio's KOOL and KMLE... what point does that prove? nothing really, except two stations can combine to have a higher share of the audience, great. In all probability, two people combine to make more income than I do exclusively.

Yes folks, these are the people that are a part of the radio biz, can't imagine why it's in the state that it's in. Sheesh.

How about the Spring 1988 12+ line-up?

1. KNIX-FM
2. KTAR
3. KZZP-FM
4. KMEO-FM
5. KUPD-FM
6. KSLX
7. KKLT
8. KFYI
9. KDKB (tie)
11. KOOL-FM
12. KOOL (AM) (tie)
14. KOY-FM
15. KAMJ-FM

KNIX and KTAR had double-digits......

Those were great ratings from 1988....!!! As far as KNIX being #1.... That was when Buck Owens owned the station and was a continuation of the dominance KNIX had in Phoenix from 1980 well into the 90's....! Number one for it seemed like forever!!! (back then)

An honor to be associated (even a little bit) with KOOL-FM. I hear the station a lot on my cellphone patched into the AUX input..really an interesting station..and quality people presenting good radio..What can be better? All of these folks are a pleasure to work with..Hope we can stay around a long time

KTAR-FM and KFYI are statistically tied in 25-54. Add in KTAR (AM) and you have a combo that can be sold truly as a combo, and which is statistically the double of KFYI, which has no affinity combo in its cluster.

You know who else is beating out KFYI? If you combine CBS Radio's KOOL and KMLE... what point does that prove?

Nothing. But the two KTAR's are combinable as a combo, as they are both talkers of one kind or another, and fit the same buy specifications.

Yes folks, these are the people that are a part of the radio biz, can't imagine why it's in the state that it's in. Sheesh.

It was Bonneville's stated purpose in moving n/t to FM and putting sports on the excellent 620 signal to create a same-call combo that could beat all comers in the genre.

And Bonneville did step one in Seattle today, putting KIRO (AM) into a simulcast with an FM. This means that every Bonneville AM n/t, if I am not mistaken, is moving to FM via simulcast or ahs totally moved to FM as in DC and PHX.

What frequency and format was KAMJ-FM? I can't remember those calls. And in Spring of '88 was KMEO-FM AC? Finally, what were the formats on KOOL's AM and FM at the time? I love seeing these old ratings, would love to know how much KZZP was beating Y95 at the time.

KAMJ was Magic 101...now KZON. KMEO was elevator muzak...now Mix 96~Nine. KOOL-FM was Sixties + oldies, while KOOL AM was Fifties oldies with local jocks (remember when Lee Baby was moved from FM to AM?). KOOL AM is now KKNT 9~Sixty. Nurse Jeff and I don't recall the spread between KZZP and Y~95, but 104~Seven hung in the format longer.

I believe KOOL (AM) was originating the "Cool Gold" full-time syndicated format by this time. KZZP was just short of double digits. Divide by 2 then subtract a point for KOY-FM. Then subtract another point for KKFR ;)

Can you believe three soft ACs in the market? (98.7, 101.5, 99.9).

doublex said:
These three were rockin' compared to the real elevator music on KMEO. That is, until KMEO joined the AC war as Sunny 97.

Then transitioned to Oldies with a far superior product to KOOL-FM, only to be left high and dry when TMISU sold the station to Nationwide and exited Phoenix. They would pay dearly to re-enter.

I believe Sunny 97 was helmed by Joel Gray, the current PD of 98.7 The Peak

If I recall correctly, KZZP began transitioning to a more AC-ish approach around 1990 (I think it was right after Bruce Kelly's departure)...becoming full-blown AC as Variety 104.7 in April 1991 (I think?)

Y95 remained a Rhythmic-leaning Mainstream CHR (the early 90's version of what KZZP is today) until about November 1992 (again, shortly after Bruce Kelly's departure from that station). They tried a bizarre dayparted approach (Hot AC leaning during the day, Modern Rock/Hip-Hop/Techno oriented at night) from that point until about March 1993. They went to pretty much straight-ahead CHR for another six months, before throwing in the towel for good in September 1993.
