straight to sat. radio and mp3 players! It's over, rock radio is dead, has been for a long time. I will have to come to my senses and realize that the medium is not to going to give me what I want, so I will have to go find it myself. There's way too much very good music out there for me to listen to that's not getting played on the radio. I am not going to wait on corporate radio anymore to pull their collective heads out of their asses. I will not auffer through anymore songs that I first heard in the freaking 8th grade (I'm 37 y.o.), I will not suffer through it, I can't take it anymore, I made a joke about asking a station to play Pink floyd's "comfortably numb" during afternoon drive and slamming my car into a tree, well guess what, I heard it this week, 4:30 in the afternoon. I AM DONE.

This is from another thread that I posted that echos exactly your sentiments:

"We, the people, are in effect the music directors now and radio needs to play our play lists. There is all kinds of fresh music being downloaded off the Internet that radio needs to play. Radio no longer needs contrived marketing research for music and songs.... the people are already picking what they like. Radio needs to jump on the bandwagon and start playing what is popular in downloads on the Internet.

If radio ignores this, the listeners will simply ignore radio."

Radio is killing itself.

Re: Houston's Classic Redux...

Gee, folks. I've been waving that banner for a while now.

Fant & Crew have been asked more than once if they could change the playlist up a bit. They have but only slightly.

Those of you who know me can attest to my sincere support of not only rock radio but the personalities that connect the music to the community.

Sadly, KIOL seems determined to keep the same narrow playlist that KLOL had after it was converted to "Houston's Classic".

I can't begin to describe the level of disappointment.

Well, it sounds like you didn't crash your car into a tree, or if you did, you survived the accident well. I hope you continue to post on the board and let us know how it is in Satelliteville and MP3Land. Your posts are always funny (I mean that in a good way)...

Re: Houston's Classic Redux...

I've been planning on installing XM in my truck for a while. After visiting Orlando and having XM in my rental, it completely SOLD me! Can't wait to listen to Boneyard again!!

BTW, In the Orlando/Tampa area, there seems to be a strong signal almost on all Freqs... I was picking up stuff from all over the State..

I agree 100 percent...the should be no reason why radio suits can't cull the data from the net and find out what people want to hear...it just makes no sense....

Sadly I must agree. I really wanted it to work out.
Their play list. SUCKS!!! Period.
I can't get the Alvin station in the car I drive now, so I pop around until I get to the house.

When out and about on the weekends. It's Swinging 650 baby!

One more thing. I hate what cheap channel did to 790. I am glad to see their ratings are still in the dirt! HA!HA!HA! That will teach them to X me. HA!HA!

I feel your pain Kendro....but sadly this happens all the time in all industries, ask Chrysler (remember the K car?), Chevy, et.. al..if your product is crap, then people will not purchase it. That's just the way it is. The concert industry is in a slump, the music industry is in a slump (due to illegal downloading in their words), and radio is in a slump. THE CAUSE? The product is crap!

Cummulus had a great chance to do something fresh and exciting, but all we get is a hot talk format and a classic rock station..YAWN...

a great level of disappointment indeed...

Yes, the product is crap. Go up and down the dial, and it's ALL crap. Why is it crap? Simple. Not a one of those stations, at least the English-speaking stations, is programmed LOCALLY. Cox and Cumulus are programmed out of Atlanta. (Since when did Atlanta become "Broadcasting Mecca"?)

I very much agree with your posts. KIOL has been a serious joke since signing on in Houston. Most of us were very excited about KIOL possibly being a strong active/rock station. Instead we got a crummy KLOL clone with a s#*ty signal! We already have a classic rock station. At least KLOL played bands like Godsmack. I've never heard Godsmack on KIOL. Just the s.o.s over and over again.
I've been an XM subscriber since 2002. XM is the best investment I've ever made. Houston rock radio will never compare to the solid programming on XM. Everybody have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend!

Re: Houston's Classic Redux...

I know I'm in the minority, but I like KIOL. It's a lot better than KIOC (that's not saying much) but I find it to be listenable after W&J are off the air. I like listening to Dave in the afternoon, and the music selection is good, but then I am a dinosaur.

I actually like it too...I just worry about them.

I think they are playing a little too much classic rock. Is KIOC a Beaumont classic rocker? Reason why I ask: If Beaumont does not have a classic rock station, then it makes since for KIOL to play it. If Beaumont does have a classic rock station, then I question why KIOL is playing so much of it and trying to compete with KKRW.

I also worry about their sound quality. Stan, if what you say is true (in the newer thread) about them trying to focus on the HD quality...I hope they STOP!! I've been really patient but it's almost unlistenable now. Are they getting any benefit coverage wise by messing with the audio like this? They were doing okay for a while (other than the occassional pesterings from KOUL/KVIL)...but this week the sound has been poor.

I agree that it's not a bad station, but I think they are just taking it in the wrong direction if they want to be competitive...and I really want them to be competitive!!

I like listening to Outlaw Dave too. He seems relaxed, and he and Elaine Closure seem to have fun on the air together. I have to disagree with you about W&J...they're my favorite part of the day!

Active Rock is the way to go..

I just think that Active Rock would do so much better. The Buzz is not hard enough and KIOL sounds like they are going after the same demos as KKRW. With their signal being weaker, it is definitely a mistake. Also, with KLDE playing a lot more Classic Rock/Hits, it just seems like KIOL is fighting an uphill battle. Active Rock would garner more listeners. It is time to try it, otherwise I fear their ratings will continue to sink.
______________

.....hmmmmm.....taking into account the logisitics of programming costs, nonetheless, one might wonder how this situation would fare now had they gone the satellite feed route of "Z-Rock"......btw, is this satellite feed still available to local stations to choose from?.....

.....just wonderin'.......

as always, thanks for readin' this BS!

Beaumont doesn't have a classic rock station. We do have KIOC, whose sound and production quality is far worse than KIOL. They play a broad spectrum of rock that some would call a trainwreck.

In another post, someone laid the bad sound quality at the feet of Cumulus management, specifically an individual who thinks he "knows" what the radio should sound like. Apparently this individual is either hearing impaired or clueless. I'll guess the latter.

I like W&J - I just can't take three hours of them. Plus I'm usually busy during the time they are on the air.

Nope. Z-Rock died with the hair bands. I'm not aware of any active rock satellite networks. All the sat formats I know of skew on the upper side of 25-54.
______________

I couldn't find any Active Rock satellite network. Waitt Radio Neworks does have a 24 hour New Rock/Alternative music network. I am not familiar with either Waitt Radio Networks or their programming.

Re: Active Rock is the way to go..

As I stated earlier, I'm afraid KIOL is what it is. I don't think they plan on changing anything.

I listened for a two day period a while back and really loved some of the listening segments. Tom Petty, good Stones that I haven't heard on the radio in quite a while, Yes, old Foo Fighters--there were some great moments.

However, this station IS fighting an uphill battle. The playlist is too rocky. At least when I listen to KISS in SA, I know exactly what I'm going to hear before I listen and it's mostly stuff I like. Rage, Tool, Slipknot, Pantera, Ozzy. That's still the best rock station in Texas.

KIOL is neither unpredictable or predictable, it's mostly bleh. Sometimes you'll listen and hear a stowaway song that you forgot even existed. Other times you'll nothing but a hear a bunch of crap that's been beat into your head (i.e. "Rock and Roll"). "Rock and Roll" is a great Zepp. song in its own right, but some of these segments where all the song are like this just get irritating and boring.

KLOL had the advantage when they had Mandatory Metallica. They were able to retain some listeners who liked them. Now that KTBZ plays a far better and superior range of Metallica, KIOL just can't compete. The other night they played "Leper Messiah" and "Fight Fire With Fire." They never played these songs on KLOL!
All I've heard on KIOL is "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters." Will not cut it.
KIOL is missing the mark on playing a lot of rock bands that are not played enough on Houston radio.

KTBZ's most requested song is "BYOB" by System of a Down, but is it played as such?? NO! They play it maybe 4 times a week and then somewhere in nocturnal emissions.

Playing the most wanted song 19 times a week verses another song, Exies "Ugly" 47 times that few people are requesting just pisses me off.

KIOL could really pick up on this and gain a few more listeners.

Active rock is the only way to go.

Slater hath spoken.
