Specialty Jazz Programs

In markets without a smooth jazz station (which would be most), I've seen some have a weekend 4-5 hour jazz show, usually on an AC station.

WMYI in Greenville, SC has a "Sunday Jazz Brunch" program from 6am-10am on Sunday. The playlist doesn't seem to have been updated much since 2006 (I don't think the program is a priority and the current PD may not know anything about SJ). It's a nice 'fix', since the market doesn't have a jazz station of any form and couldn't support one, but a specialty show for it may do well enough. How many other stations are doing this, and what are your thoughts?
 
I know of two that are very current and very instrumental with some well-placed and great vocals. Warm 98 in Cincinnati (WRRM) has "Smooth Jazz Saturday Night" from 7P-12MID. It's been on for years, but used to be more eclectic under a different host. The current program hosted by a weekday station personality looks like it might be consulted by BA. Mostly instrumental but are all the instrumentals BA is playing and has played. Still a good listen though without all the AC crossovers. The other is KMXG in Davenport, IA with TWO Sunday shows by the same host, Art Monroe. "The Jazz Patio" is Sundays 9A-12NOON and "Smooth Jazz Sunday Night" is 6P-9P Davenport time. Very nice and with multiple cuts from new CDs. Both versions are similar and obviously with music selected by the host and his audiences. Very well done and includes local artists. I'm surprised more AC stations aren't picking these up. KMXG's version is good enough for syndication.

Sounds pretty good. WMYI doesn't play many vocals that I am aware of.

I saw on their website that KUDL/Kansas City has a SJ program from 7am-10am on Sundays. I'll have to give them a listen (as well as the ones you mentioned).
 
I program the music for one that has been on the air for over 15 years. The Lite Jazz Brunch on WLRQ in Melbourne, FL. This market actually has a full time station too but they skew older and play a lot more of the relaxing and riffy stuff. I can't quote ARB on these pages due to BB rules but let's just say that since this show got away from covers and oldie pop vocals and started going beyond the singles the ratings have become delicious and not just with the elders :)

As a regular listener The Lite Jazz Brunch on WLRQ, I can understand your ratings success AC!! Your show is outstanding!! Congrats!!

Between "The.wav", "The Harmonic Lounge" and WLRQs "Lite Jazz Brunch", Sundays are an absolute delight!! ;)

Gracias! The show is voicetracked so Eric can have a life and automation cannot mix music which is the one thing I wish could be executed better because these songs are programmed for the most part as a megamix..they do fit together. I think Rob Moores endeavor is going to be a good place to discover some vocals too...

As I now listen to "The Future of Jazz With Chris" for the first time, I'd be remiss if I didn't also specifically mention "The.wav's"' superb specialty Sunday programming...Nock, your show is outstanding!! Thanks DD, It's comments like these that keep me going back every week. Get this, had a 19 year old kid drop by the studio yesterday asking me how he can hear more of what I was playing. So much for that 45 and up demo that this format supposedly attracts?

I know what you mean Nock. My brother who is twenty and I am twenty five and we love this format of music. I will have to check out these shows when I get the time.

Awesome, another youngster in the house! Nock, myself, and others have always opined on this board (and have been flamed by others for our stance) that there is a young audience out there for this music. It just takes sharp programming and clever marketing to flesh them out!!!
 
Just found out that WRRM (Warm 98) in Cincinnati cancelled "Smooth Jazz Saturday Night".
 
Nick Francis, Music Director at KPLU-FM, produces and hosts a three hour program called Quiet Music, that was broadcast on many smooth jazz stations until last year. It is now exclusively broadcast on KYOT-FM (The Coyote-Phoenix) on Sunday mornings from 7am-10am (MST). Each weeks playlist can be found on http://quietmusic.com/ and you can listen via the internet stream on the KYOT website (http://www.kyot.com/main.html).
 
I've stayed away from tooting my own horn but with the post before this mentioning Nick Francis, then it's probably time. I produce and host a three hour audio story called the Harmonic Lounge. I took over Nick's "Quiet Music" slots in Columbus, Harrisburg/Lebanon/Carlisle, Gainesville/Ocala, Destin/Ft. Walton Beach and Modesto/Stockton. I carried Nick's show on my station but realized that it was a terrific thing to listen to for a music guy like myself, but that it was a bit too hip for most listeners (No disrespect here at all). The Harmonic Lounge is a "commerically eclectic" show that fits perfectly on smooth jazz stations but is also designed for AC and Triple A. It's very smooth and mellow and is not urban leaning at all. It combines elements of soft contemporary jazz, new age, chill and acoustic music, both instrumental and vocal, into a mix not found anywhere else. I have twenty years of experience in programming this music and the show was crafted from that expertise along with over four hundred one-on one interviews with dedicated listeners (Yes, research can be used for good). You can stream the show from any of my stations and the times vary. I have just worked out a deal with a small boutique syndicator (Keller Broadcasting/www.keller-broadcasting.com) who is helping with promotion, marketing and delivery. I'm very excited for the prospects! I'm also going to The Wav.Net and hope to be up and running around the first Sunday in April. Since the show airs a week after it airs locally live, I am thinking it was the new Afterlife track Let It Go from Eletrosensitive? Let me know if that is the one and appreciate the comment.

I just sampled it and I don't believe this was the cut in question.

It played at the very end of your program following a cut called "Early May" if I'm not mistaken???
