Speculation about the "new" WOR

It's been an interesting couple of weeks at 'OR with lots of live and local fill-ins/auditions(?) in various time slots. Here's what I'm wondering:

- If Glenn Beck is moving to WOR, why not already? Instead there have been a variety of local hosts in that slot.
- Andy Dean is already in place at 6 pm ... is this permanent?
- Are any of the fill-in hosts being considered for live/local spots?

The fill-ins are a mixed bag.

- Ron Insana - doing a better job than with his short-lived syndicated show where he sounded frazzled by the format and was always out of breath, out of time! Still, his presentation is pretty plain vanilla.

- Scott Rasmussen - yawn ... predictably, too much "inside politics" ... same old, same old.

- Rita Cosby - in stark contrast to J.J. Kennedy who is totally professional, always in control, very insightful and funny, Cosby sounds completely out of control and giggles her way through everything. Like Monica Crowley on steroids!

- J.D. Hayworth - a good listen. Knowledgeable, good sense of humor, I'll bet he'd grow on the WOR audience.

- Ron Kuby - terrific! Energetic, opinionated, funny, knowledgeable (especially about the law) and knows how to entertain. IMO, Kuby could become CC's East Coast Bill Handle.

Any thoughts about what might occur next Monday ... or will it be a slow, gradual roll out of new programming?

Following the departure of Dr. Joy Browne and former New York State Governor David Patterson we learn the fate of Dave Ramsey at WOR, which is now owned by Clear Channel. “The Dave Ramsey Show” has renewed with WOR and the show will remain in its current time slot – weekdays live from 2p.m. ET to 4p.m. ET

Then any hope that WOR might become the East Coast KFI is dead in the water.

Why??? That Dave Ramsey show is the biggest tune out on radio. "I'm debt free" is worse than "You're a great American".

Ramsey must be paying for clearance. That's all I can figure.

Mike Gallagher sez his show has been cancelled by WOR's 'new ownership'...he expects to pop up on 970 The Answer...Dave Ramsey reports he has a new contract for 2 to 4pm...betcha though that can be changed asap...Ramsey wants a decent NYC clearance.

JD Hayworth was filling in for Peter Tilden on KABC 790 in Los Angeles last week. He ranted for two hours about the gun situation and about Sandy Hook. Although many people (including me) who post on this board believe KABC is a lousy talk station, I think Hayworth is a good fit for talk radio. He is not afraid to show opinions on issues.

Anything to avoid hiring actual local talent. Way to go, CC.

It's interesting - AM has its difficulties as is, CC compounds the issue with imported talent that's now having to split focus between two major markets that should very easily support their own, local hosts.

John + Ken appeared briefly on WABC many years ago in evenings (simulcast with KFI, I believe - needs confirmation; or possibly while they were briefly in mornings at KABC and then did a separate show for WABC-??).

Hopefully John and Ken won't "pretend" to be in New York. Listeners see through this stuff and it's dishonest. I listen to a lot of Internet radio from around the country and if someone is in LA and it's 6 pm, I want to know that, even if it's 9 pm here.

Time and place are important in news/talk radio. Blurring those details obfuscates the "one-to-one" relationship between host and listener that's long been considered one of radio's unique strengths.

Ron Kuby is "filling in" right now (10 am Thursday) for whoever will eventually be in the 10-noon spot.

CC SHOULD HIRE KUBY!

Kuby says it's not happening (a comment he made during a previous fill-in.) I'm hoping that's just part of his negotiation strategy, ie. sending the message, "They haven't offered me enough money!"

Attorneys make good talk show hosts (Neal Boortz, Bill Handel.) Kuby has the skills and smarts to talk about more than just politics and he's well known to NY talk listeners. Put him in PM drive and, (with Gambling in AM drive) WOR will begin to sound like a vibrant, cohesive, locally oriented talk station.

With CC/WOR having just hired Mark Simone for weekdays 10 to noon, that means WOR now has 7 hours/day of live and local programming! If that's the direction they're headed, I wonder about the conventional wisdom that Limbaugh and Hannity will necessarily land there when their contracts expire.

Wouldn't it make more sense for CC to retain the current NY outlet for these aging dinosaurs while using WOR to cultivate new talent? Seems to me that would give them the best of both worlds, as long as Cumulus/WABC didn't get wise to the plan. ;)

My theory is reinforced by reading John Mainelli's comments on the message board across the street. I didn't realize Steve Borneman had moved over to WOR. Kuby in PM Drive? Perfect idea! This could be exciting!!
