Speculation: Will TBS sell Seinfeld?

The station has relegated it to early mornings and overnights, removed all weekend showings, and took it off all evenings (it used to be on early evenings). Do you think they are getting ready for a sale?

Not sure what you mean by that. Distribution for Seinfeld is controlled by Sony. TBS may be at the end of their rights period.

Seinfeld is syndicated to TBS by the show's syndicator, Sony who works in association with Castle Rock, the producer of the show and Jerry himself (who owns a piece of the show).

TBS "rents" the shows.

More likely would be a scenario where the TBS deal is nearing its end and they are easing out of their usage of the show, perhaps because they still have rerun rights for the episodes.

Crackle App it's Sony Pictures version of Netflix and Hulu is airing Seinfeld on their app.

Seinfeld is a Sony show.

I'm not sure exactly on how long TBS has to air the syndicated contract for Seinfeld though until Sony decides to not renew the broadcast contract of the show though specifically for TBS and others.

plus we are at the point to where we are entering the 20th anniversary of the last season of the show as the show ended in 1998. in fact, on July 5 of 2019, it will be the 30th anniversary of the series debut and this May marks 20 years to the day the show ended when it ended on May 14, 1998.

i wouldn't be surprise if TBS loses the rights and Viacom wins the TV rights in the near future and airs it on Comedy Central, on Nickelodeon's Nick At Nite, and TV Land.

Well Seinfeld and Sony Pictures recently moved their show "Comedians in Cars getting Coffee" from Sony Owned Crackle to Netflix for broadcast rights. Also the audience size had to be a factor here for Seinfeld's recent show to move from in house at Sony Crackle to Netflix.

In the case of TBS and Seinfeld I'm not entirely sure on what the audience size has to be to keep Seinfeld on syndication.

Seinfeld also airs on broadcast TV all over the country. In the SF Bay Area, KTVU Fox 2 ran it 2 or 3 times a day for years. Now, they've shifted it to the other station in their duopoly, KICU, where it still airs twice a day.

Lots of shows run their course in syndication and get replaced by newer product that P1's will watch.

Hogan's Heroes was everywhere, now it is on MeTV at 10PM, and in many markets it is pre-empted by local news

Two and a Half Men was on every channel it seems, now I can't find it.

Two Broke Girls is getting old....

Mom is currently hot in syndication, in ten years maybe it will be gone... depends on how long a run it has in prime time.

The Big Bang Theory is in local and national syndication, the prime time version is about to jump the shark, and is getting long in the tooth... it seems to have long legs in syndication

M*A*S*H is another show that has been pushed off the schedule in many markets... great show in its time, it just not play well to the current crop of 18-54 year olds... at one time it was everywhere

I can speak for other markets, but Two and a Half Men is still on in Hartford on FOX 61 WTIC-TV. And on cable the rights moved from FX to Paramount Network/Nick-at-Nite plus a separate package with IFC.

MASH is still on Cable. TVLAND/Paramount Network airs it. As well as AMC/Sundance Channel. Isn't MASH on ME TV also?

Big Bang Theory its syndicated on TBS nationally and here in San Francisco the syndicated version of Big Bang Theory is on the Fox O&O's like KTVU Fox2 and KTVU+. The Prime Time version is on CBS.

MASH is also on WGN America as well. Two And A Half Men is on at 11:30PM until 12:30AM on Fox17.

In ten years both Mom and Two Broke Girls will end up either on Antenna TV or Me-TV.

If Antenna or Me still exist in ten years. Personally, I don't know why anybody wants to watch any TV show all carved up for extra commercials, sped-up for more commercials, or both. With some luck, "classic" shows will all be available on the internet by then.

It's as true now as it was when Mencken wrote it: “No one in this world, so far as I know ... has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people."

Viacom took over Two and a Half Men cable syndication rights. Reruns air afternoons on the Paramount Network, and late nights on Nick at Nite. However, IFC also runs Charlie & Alan as well...not sure how AMC also got the rights from Warner Bros. Also in OTA syndication, out here they air weekdays at 4PM on our local Fox station.

TBS seems to have taken their programming in the direction of newly produced comedies for the "young and hip".

I don't find them to be particularly funny, but that seems to be the direction they have chosen.
In such a scenario a two-decade old sitcom like Seinfeld may just not fit in.

I am sure it would quickly turn up someplace else on cable.

I guess you're not "young and hip." :) Those two words follow a lot of our discussion about what advertisers are looking for in radio too.

How did AMC get the rights to "Men"? Viacom and AMC both bought the rights when FX's contract expired. I think back when "Men" entered cable syndication it wasn't common for show to be on different networks with different owners.

The rights to "Mom" are owned by both Viacom an FOX. The show airs 3PM-5PM Monday-Friday on CMT and 10PM-11PM/1AM-2AM on TVLAND. It airs at various times on FXX.

Until 2018 Last Man Standing was owned by Disney, Viacom, and Hallmark. Hallmark no longer airs the show.
