Sponsors Yank Ads From WTKK Over Severin Flap

Many sponsors have pulled advertising from 96.9 WTKK, and are reluctant to resume advertising with the station should the currently-suspended Jay Severin return to the air.

To quote a spokesman from former sponsor The Retailers Association of Massachusetts: "If he comes back on, we're not spending any money with him. We don't want to be associated with him. This guy is very controversial right now. He said some things we don't want to be associated with."

(Wow, I actually scooped the great raccoonradio on a story for a change! ;) )

Thanks--I was almost gonna put that up last night to be honest; the article was linked over at Boston Radio Watch. But I was tired and about to go to bed; also I only noticed a couple advertisers actually pulled the spots for now whereas many more were "thinking" of it should he come back.

Thanks for scooping me, though! :)

If sponsors pull ads because of a host, that host should be terminated. That's the sole reason why 'talk radio hosts' exist in the first place...to pull in ad revenue. Today's talk radio host is tomorrow's burger flipper, so there's nothing inherently 'valuable' about any of them. If Severin willingly caused the departure of station revenue, why isn't that analogous to embezzlement or theft?

Severin--whose ideology I generally agree with--ought to be figuring out his exit strategy here. There really can be no other 'next step' for him in the industry. However, I'm reminded of the WEEI 'Metco Gorilla' duo and how many times they've whistled by the graveyard.

Different story : D&C were rated 2nd(after WBCN) when the METCO flap took place. You can't can someone making so much money for the station even if two or three sponsors leave. Five will jump in their place with a big smile. Severin is a different story. He's not even in Top 10 and making tons of dough. The only option is a contract re-do or a buyout. His decision. If he were smart, he'd take the cash and run. But his ego has a big Eggo so he'll take the cut and stay.

So, not the only guy taking a pay cut on Morrissey Blvd. (though yes Jay has been doing the show from
his Manchester-by-the-Money manse)
