Sporting News Radio 'changes'

thank you all for the update.
Whoever get a chance to listen, may you let us know how it sounds?
For me, When it was "Sporting News Radio" it sounded good

Got to give them credit for pulling this one off...all this board has ever talked about was SNR "going out of business"

Yahoo! isn't exactly on the best financial terms themselves these days. What makes you think this won't delay the inevitable?

So we bash ESPN on here...we bash FSR....and we have been talking about SNR dying forever.

Yahoo Sports is the #1 sports site in the country...I don't think we have to worry about them running out of money.

Maybe it's okay for all of us to just say "wow...that's cool". And there are 3 competitors again.

The network already had virtually zero connection to Sporting News Magazine, so moving away from it wasn't an issue. As Darren Rovell of CNBC said today, the move makes sense because YahooSports is a far more relevant brand than Sporting News is. If they get rights to have some of the Yahoo writers and analysts on with this branding deal, it's a home run.

Dan Wetzel was the first guest... Rivals is tweeting that they will be heavily involved... Adrian Wojnarowski will be a guest on the Brando show today... I'd say they have access to the right writers and analysts.

Production values are good - no sung jingles, but a recognizable audio logo. Good work so far.

Just get rid of Tim Brando, Bob Berger, Steve Czaban, and tell Scott Wright to focus more on sports instead of "the world beyond sports" and I may actually listen.

Nathan is right about WEEI and ESPN. There are overnight shows, baseball playoffs etc.

For LauroJRM: I don't know if you have an XM radio in your car, as I do, but YSR is on Ch 209
(or was it 208). Hunted for it, found it, Tim Brando was talking sports and then they had a promo
with David Gow saying (and you can guess his references): "We all know about the radio sports network in Bristol CT. They just want to promote their TV network. And the one in L.A..,they've got the Hollywood glitz and glamour. But we're the network for the true sports fans, with the best
personalities..."

This is a pretty big deal, I think. It's a 'rebirth' of sorts for this lineup of hosts and shows. And as was mentioned earlier, Yahoo Sports itself has several segmented platforms (Rivals.com, The Post Game, Associate Content and the NFL/NBA/MLB/NASCAR/MMA sports blogs), which means there's much more in the way of content and contributors they can utilize.

I can definitely see them gaining a few affiliates out of these changes, some of which might be ESPN Radio defectors. I know of one small market example, WNSP in Bay Minette/Mobile, AL, who dropped ESPN earlier this year.

FSR will be hurting for guests if Yahoo writers are exclusive to Yahoo Sports Radio. Many appear across the all the shows on FSR.

Interesting question.
Ben Maller works for FSR. Ben Maller works for Yahoo.
Can he still plug his website which now leads directly to the competition?

mmm. good point on ben maller.

he loses a ton of weight and then hooks up with yahoo. interesting...

i suspect he'll "shed" fsr for the new yahoo/gow hybrid sometime soon.

maybe doing overnight as a "drudge" kind of thing leading into east coast drive.

Yahoo needs to buy up FM stations around the country and get their product going around the country. Yahoo is flush with cash

Yahoo doesn't own or operate Yahoo Sports Radio. It's not their product. It's a marketing partnership with Gow Communications, much like Fox Sports Radio is with Premiere.

Marketing Partnership..? That sounds wimpy

*SMH*

You're reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much into this. I don't think "Big Ben" is leaving FSR any time soon just because there was a marketing partnership change at SNR/YSR. That's wishful thinking. Unless Premiere/FSR dismisses Ben (again), there will be no change whatsoever.

What in the hell are you talking about? *facepalm*

The name change from SNR to YSR was necessary, and a good thing for them. But for people to expect disaffected ESPN or FSR affils to stampede at Gow's office asking to switch - or for the Yang family to fork over millions of dollars to purchase FM radio stations - is utterly ludicrous.

So far, this has only been a cosmetic change. Nothing more. It's like Premiere Radio Networks terminating their licensing agreement with Fox Sports and aligning with NBC Sports instead.

I like Yahoo! and all that internet stuff they do, nice email and all that, but "Yahoo! Sports Radio" is a bit cumbersome or something, it just doesn't flow together or go together. Maybe in a few years, I'll be used to the idea, because "Sporting News" has meant "sports news" to me since I was able to read and got the new one every Saturday and memorized the stats in the back and the places to send for unopened Topps sets and whatnot.

I suppose "Yahoo! Sports Radio" is better than "Root Sports (Market)" though.
As long as they keep the jingles and sounders where they say "Sport-ing News Ray-dee-o" that sound like the old "One-on-One Sportssss" jingles, I might be able to get over it. At least that would make it a bit easier. ;D

It's simply window dressing... nothing new. It's one last ditch attempt to keep the fledgling network in business. Don't get me wrong it's a smart move, but won't have a monster impact.
