Sports Radio 929

Dave to go all sports in October, new PD Terry Fox from Pittsburgh. They will stay in format until the flip, just like Tampa.
I look forward to Mara's analysis of the NFL draft next year.

Alright, then everyone explain to me why CBS let 680 The Fan get their network's content? Don't you think they would have reserved it for themselves. So now they are stuck with a Yahoo! or NBCSportsRadio affiliation because Dickey has both ESPN & Fox Sports on his AMs. Now, I would love to have an NBC Sports radio outlet in Atlanta, and they could air NBC News Radio as well. It might work. If they could get Buck & Kincade and/or Wes Durham and that guy, they could have a powerhouse station. They could get DG/WW1 sports and there's your outlet for Tech football (Wes Durham.....). Just some thoughts.

no surprise

CBS makes a decision

The station has its critics, but its life span as a music station is nearly over as Dave FM will force changes at both 680 and 790 when it flips to Sports in Sept following in the footsteps of CBS sports FM's in Boston, Detroit, Dallas, and most recently Tampa.
Seeing Cumulus has the new sports net, will be interesting if 92 9 becomes an ESPN affiliate.

IIRC Cumulus and CBS are in a deal to "distribute" CBS sports network. I have not seen the contract but, why would Cumulus / Dickey not put something in the contract to protect 680 from an assault from their "partner"? Love them or hate them the Dickey's are smarter than that. If 92.9 goes sports the only way I would allow (If I ran Cumulus / Dickey) it was to have a agreement for CBS to buy Lincoln Financial and "swap" 92.9 for 94.1.

We all know that would ruin Star94. Staff meetings are and interesting thing, aren't they?

IIRC the guy who programmed 106.7 all news was from Pittsburgh too. Another strange fact Atlanta had at one the largest non Pennsylvania Steelers fan club.

The sports network will be distributed to overnights and non-CBS radio stations. The station that takes over 92.9 will likely be all local until overnights. Therefore, CBS doesn't mind Cumulus getting the network.

I am sure there is some kind of revenue share, etc. agreement between CBS and Cumulus for such a situation, i n general. Where things get sticky is the fact that Cumulus does not own 680 and the Dickeys have to watch out for fiduciary duty/conflict of interest issues with how they operate 680 vis-a-vis Cumulus. I could see them being in a situation where they would have to "sacrifice" 680 (Dickey Broadcasting being privately and closely held) to the interests of publicly-held Cumulus.

Bottom line: If CBS wants to make 92.9 a sportstalker and carry CBS Sports, 680/Dickey cannot reasonably stop them. But they could be an AM side to 92.9, which opens up possibilities for multicasting various games and other programming on a decent signal. In fact, with 92.9 + Dickey's 3 AMs, they could carry a WIDE variety of college and pro games.

You're correct. In markets where CBS owns all-sports stations on AM and FM, they put the CBS Sports Network on AM and are local on FM. The Fan's use of the CBS Sports Network has no effect on 92.9's plans.

I know any CBS, Cumulus, Dickey deal will be "legal". When Cumulus went all news with 106.7 I was kind of surprised that was not 92.9 that went all news, so I guess anything could happen.

I've worked on an interesting theory about what Pittsburgh would have been like if it was part of the Confederacy in 1860 (not all that far-fetched given the clash between Virginia and Pennsylvania over the Ohio Valley in the 1760s and thereafter). Maybe seeing Pittsburghers running radio stations down there can be worked into that theory.

(I'm half-kidding, folks, though I do have that theory.)

I will give CBS credit for starting in the Fall when their AM rivals start to go directional earlier. I wonder now that Sylvia NC's 680 is going to or is now on 540, can WCNN "loosen up" their daytime pattern north and possibly the night time pattern too?

Another thought with ESPN LMAing of a Emmis FM signal in New York not producing a bounce:

http://www.radio-info.com/stations/wepn-fm

It might take CBS several rating periods if not years to kill either 790 or 680.

IMHO CBS buying 790* from LF or 680 from the Dickeys would be cheaper, faster revenue realization with an existing successful sales team at either station.

* 94.1 would really make a good addition to CBS's cluster too. Then all of the major commercial signals in Atlanta will be owned by a "C"!
