Sports Radio in LA

WOW!!!!!!! LA Sports radio did it again. 2 Game 7 Playoff games in Hockey. The Memphis-San Antonio playoff basketball game and 570 has some idiots talking about sex. On 710 they were talking about the Lakers (OK, it's the Laker station) and the Dodgers (That's Local and VERY big news so i'll let them slide). Brilliant programming 570. I know, I know ....... your demographic is left handed, one eyed eunuchs with speech impediments and your tops in the ratings with them. (shaking head)

Can't fault them for the lack of hockey coverage. I say this as a casual hockey fan myself so it is not a putdown of the sport itself, but in this market Gregorian chants would get a higher rating than hockey.

Jack Kent Cook, original owner of the Kings (who would later own the Washington Redskins) was said to have had a quote where he said "There are over 500,000 Canadians living in the greater Los Angeles area, and I now know why they moved - they hate hockey!"

As for Petros and Money, did you really tune in expecting them to be talking sports?

I have noticed that as Petros rattles off a list of sports topics, he frequently says something like, "we'll get into that in more detail as the series rolls along"....or as it gets closer....or whatever....but they never actually do.....it is the ultimate "kick the can down the street" radio show.

I noticed that two years ago when Don Martin inflicted Petros and Matt on a nationwide scale via SuperStation KLAC.

Worst sports show I have ever heard.

Bar none.

By any definition, it's not a sports show, just happens to be on a sports station so they have to thrown in sports references here and there. A show with "I'm a horse monday" or something is not about sports.

It's basically a "wacky morning zoo" type-show that reluctantly talks about sports (what would you expect from a show called "PMS"?). They have a number of lame segments like "lance romance" that grinds the show to a halt. It's probably the last "sports" show in-town I would turn to hear anything resembling 'sports talk'.

The latest ratings show what a nosedive KSPN 710 has taken since Mike Thompson tookover as P.D. as they are now at an all-time low of 0.6 with a cume of 389,000. They were over 500,000 back in July. KLAC 570 is also at 0.6 with a cume of 302,500. Tiny KLAA 830 in Anaheim is at 0.5 with a cume of 317,300 which has to please the folks at the Angels. It's clear that what Mike Thompson at 710 and Don Martin at 570 are doing is not working.

About time that someone mentions KLAA in this thread. They have the only local sportstalk show in AM drive, and have told me that there are plans to add more local elements in the future. They are all over the Angels, which is the dominant sports story in this town at the moment.

Artie Moreno and company have done a fine job at KLAA and I like Roger Lodge and his Sportslodge in AM drive. Great news if they plan on adding more live and local. David it must get you mad how much KSPN neglects USC. Max Kellerman spent 2 hours today and not one mention of the Trojans. Ridiculous.

The whole Kellerman Wiley show is ridiculous. Kellerman is annoying and Wiley is uninsightful. Together they are... well, you know. Ex-jocks make good color analysts on the game, but horrible sidekicks on the radio. The only one who was tolerable was Mychal Thompson, but that is because he is more well-read and well-rounded than most.

Down the dial, there is nothing more laughably ridiculous than when Hartman, Pat O'Brien, and VTB say "what is said on this show... MATTERS!" Riiiight, just like my opinions on how to achieve world peace.

No sooner do they say that howler, they all spend 15 minutes of their A block (their A block!) detailing in mind-numbing detail what they did this weekend, while not-so-subtly mentioning their outside projects and network appearances. Who cares what Pat O'Brien did last weekend? It's not 1985 any more and he hasn't announced anything relevant in decades. And of course the next thing that VTB says that "matters" will be his first.

Couldn't have said it better myself!! Kellerman and Wiley will go down as one of the worst shows ever on L.A. Sports talk radio and that's saying something because there have been many.

Petros and Money also do the talking about what they did over the weekend bit and don't they get the audience doesn't give a BLEEP about it.

so Tony Bruno is gone. I assume he is not taking Tim Cates with him? Also, do we know who is replacing him?

Cates was recently heard doing pre-game for Raiders football while Tony's show was still on-air. Didn't realize
that was going to be a sign of things to come. Best of luck to Tony back in Philly.

Don Barrett just tweeted:

@barrettLARadio Has Clear Channel/LA snagged the broadcast rights for the Dodgers?

What station? Most likely AM 570 KLAC Fox Sports L.A.

i hope this is the harbinger of more changes.

it might bump more awful programming off 570. maybe mccourt can schedule all daytime home games in 2012? he saves $$$ and we're spared whatever the local LA/national hybrid programming is on next year. ha, hope springs eternal.

new announcers? keep vin of course. i don't know steiner or monday's contract situations but c'mon let's go with some younger (and of course cheaper) talent. let vin shine in his probable last year with some new voices cutting their teeth in his shadow. then in 2013, the new voices can step up with some experience in the market under their belts.

i just hope there isn't the incessant and inevitable synergy. please no vic the brick "feeling you dodgers" give aways or steve hartman dodgers trivia in the booth. the horror.

When the Dodgers were on KXTA 1150 which eventually became KLAC Vic "the Brick" Jacobs was part of the pre-game broadcast. Look for that to happen again. I hear Joe and Josh will not be back on Dodgertalk next year since they are KABC employees.

Vic should be miles away from any Dodger broadcast. Of course the same could be said for Frank and the wife owning the team.

There is indeed plenty to do besides listening to sportstalk radio in this town, and especially the horrible and downright offensive stuff such as PMS, which is a downright disgusting title for any radio program.

At least ESPN's nationally syndicated programming on KSPN is listenable.

OK, High School Football State Championship Game and me, being the busy guy that I am have to tune in to the radio to listen to the game. 2 sports formatted stations in LA and one is talking about headaches and the other snow boarding. And they wonder why noone listens to them? And please, save it. I know they are "No. 1 in their demographic" just like every other station in town. Apparently their demographic is one legged, cross eyed, bald, eunuchs with a speech impediment, and ingrown toenails. Once again I have to go elsewhere for what I want because LA radio CANNOT provide it. And these idiots seriously wonder why people don't listen to radio anymore?

I remember some years back a friend telling me that Dan Patrick had a great show. So I tuned in for 15 minutes and all he talked about was Madonna and Britney Spears kissing. A few years ago, friend tells me again to tune in, because he ain't talking about that anymore. Yep, you guessed it, he was still talking about Britney Spears. And this is the best they can do? I have a novel idea. Instead of talking about headaches or celebrities or the 3rd string bench warmer for the Northwest Central Southeastern Middle State LaCrosse team, why don't they put SPORTS on their SPORTS station. WOW! What a concept.

Jim Rome and David Stein are the only good sports related shows on the radio in LA. The rest is a waste. I always thought the whole idea of sports radio was to have sports on it.

I was right there with you right up to the point when you said "Jim Rome" and some guy I've never heard of, David Stein.

Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley will soon be gone from the KSPN airwaves:

Tweet: @SPORTSbyBROOKS After I lauded midday Max & Marcellus Show on ESPN 710 in LA last week told by sources ESPN mgmt plans to ditch the show soon
