Springfield tornado coverage

Boston has been on the air since 3-3:30, covering every minute of these storms.

Providence didn't provide ANY information of these nearby life-threatening storms until the newscasts. Even during the newscasts their coverage was spotty at best. It was pathetic. It's as if they were unaware that there were vicious, tornadic storms just on their doorstep.

Of course WFSB was all-over it. The camera mounted on top of the building of their sister station in Springfield "CBS 3" WSHM/67 caught the thing forming.

Meanwhile Clear Channel Radio dropped the ball. WHYN 560 was airing Howie Carr out of Boston. WHYN's studios are located right on Main Street in Springfield, which is pretty much ground zero for where the tornado touched down.

This is weather not normal for this area. So of course WFSB is going to be on top of it. As was NBC CT. Both WFSB and NBC CT showed their coverage on TV and online. WWLP and WGGB had live coverage on their websites as did Boston's WBZ 4 and WHDH 7.

LIVE coverage is still running online from WBZ 4 and WHDH 7. Is it also running on the TV channels for both? Especially WHDH because they are airing Stanley Cup Game 1 tonight.

since they have duopoly in the area wlvi and wsbk have coverage respectfully!! which is good since whdh took over and you missed the intermission report and all commercials!

I beg to differ. WJAR started cutting in during the 4 PM hour and then was live from 5-7:30, preempting Nightly News. They then had another update during the 7:30 hour.

And besides, the majority of the severe threat was not in the Providence DMA. The majority of that coverage was focused on Worcester county and Springfield. They're even field anchoring from Springfield at 11 tonight.

Everybody in Boston is still on the air at this moment, reporting live from Springfield. The Boston affiliates have done a tremendous job with this coverage.

WJAR probably did break in more than anyone else in Providence, I'll give you that. The Boston affiliates were on the air from 3-3:30 all the way to 9PM when the tornado warnings winded down. WPRI didn't really have much coverage outside of newscasts, and WLNE's coverage was just laughable.

I just hate living in Bristol County and being identified with the Providence market, when the rest of southeastern Massachusetts is in the Boston market. When Deval Patrick declared a State of Emergency today, the Boston affiliates carried it live, while nobody in Providence did. I want to be in a TV market where the bulk of their focus is on my state. Most Massachusetts stories just take a backseat during Providence newscasts. Whatever happens in Rhode Island does not affect us at all in Massachusetts here.

Not necessarily a ringing endorsement for the new regime which promises a stronger news identity. While I take you at your word, please describe "laughable" in this instance.

Doesn't surprise me that the Providence stations didn't do a good job covering the storms. I know people that live in RI and even they admit Providence news is a joke. One time I was there WJAR was covering a "story" about some restaurant moving from one side of the street to the other. Seriously, that's a news story?? Only in RI I guess.... ;D

It was probably on par, if not a step lower than WPRI's...

That's why whdh bought wlvi so they could use it as billboard for 7 news to hype and promote 7 news that's the only reason for it's existence it's(wlvi) the least tv station in the boston market.

Here's who had reporters there last night/this morning:

Springfield
WGGB, WWLP, WSHM

Boston
WBZ, WCVB, WHDH, WFXT

Providence
WJAR

Albany
WTEN, WXXA

Hartford
WFSB, WTNH, WVIT, WTIC

I too was surprized that WLNE did not expand their newscast until at least 7:00. If this is what the new owners at Citadel have - cutting back on news - than the future is not looking any better for the station, which is unfortunate because they have really tried making their newscasts better in the past few years. I am sure that if Global still owned the station that despite that they were in receivership they would have had expanded news and weather coverage of the storm like they have in the past.

That was why I was hoping that Hearst would buy WLNE and make it a semi-satellite of WCVB. Could you imagine having WCVB's news with local cut-ins for RI news, sports, and weather? It would be better than any of the "newscasts" that WJAR or WPRI put out.

NO, because that's not how Hearst Television has operated any of their stations - aside from WNNE which is in a small corner of an already small market. They'd NEVER do that with WLNE; it would be local.

However, I am in 100% agreement with you that Hearst purchasing WLNE would have been a really great thing for viewers in the market. They seem to be committed to high-quality newscasts and the production of good local programming. I've watched with they have done with WMUR, WPTZ and WNNE and have been very impressed. Not to mention how they have maintained consistently high-quality at WCVB for years. The local news and other programming on WCVB is at a level befitting a leading station in a top 5 market. Not as sure how they're doing with WMTW - though that was a station that had nowhere to go but up.

They would have had WLNE's newscasts at the top of the ratings within (and I am being conservative) 24 months. Given that Providence is an otherwise lackluster market, they could have really done well with it.

Clearly, the numbers didn't add up for them which is why it didn't happen. Instead, WLNE seems to have obtained yet another low-budget owner who is running the place as if it's in market number 286. Very unfortunate.

But the problem with WLNE is that there are THREE competitors in a medium-sized market which is vastly overshadowed by a very large market. WMUR is not comparable because it is the ONLY station in a market with a similar situation to Providence/New Bedford. My thought is that enough people in RI would rather watch a Boston newscast. They just want an update on local stories, local sports, and local weather. That could be done quickly with a staff of reporters unless there is breaking news in which case WLNE could go all local. The better newscast angle has been tried over and over again by WLNE over the past 30 years and it doens't work in this market.

Newest WLNE recruit Liz Tufts is still at CBS3 in Springfield and was on the ground reporting this week.

You would think that they would at least do a phone interview with her. Hell, with her supposed "experience ...shooting and editing stories for air and online," she could've cut up a custom report and shipped it off to them via e-mail/file sharing site, barring any contractual obligations.

I think the reason that WLNE didn't send anyone out is because they don't have a Sat truck - think about it, there are never live shots on WLNE in severe weather (lightning + microwave: death), or more than 40 miles away.

Who said you needed a sat truck? It would be nice, but if they wanted to take the drive... actually yeah. 2 hour drive, shoot, drive back, and post, would take over a day. But have they ever heard of "rental"? Probably isn't worth the money to say "We're LIVE on the scene" when the network feeds you the story. Gotta love it.
