Springfield's Radio Skinny! Do NYC PDs read radio message boards?

I'm pissed off at he local media when it comes to reporting the radio biz. The NY Daily News cut back to four columns per week. The NY Post has nothing. Crain's NY is ok. I have some free time, I'm going to do my best to give you guys some radio-info. (lol)

WFAN is trying out John Franco (former NY Mets closer) on the weekends. John is a smart dude. He went to St. Johns Univ. But the guy should take a speech course. Every ten seconds he blurts out..."you know". I have the same problem. I'm trying to watch myself. Memo to John: Get with the program.
Last week I spoke to WFAN PD Eric Spitz. Spitz said he din't pick that up. We hear he may listen to airchecks of John.

Back in August after the crap hit the fan with Chris Russo leaving the FanCave...Big Mike Francesa told us when he comes back from vacation in September, he would have a "new show". No co-host but a few new voices. Still waiting for the "new show".

If I was in charge of WFAN this is what I would do....Craig Carton is not well liked if you read the local papers. I would keep Boomer in AM drive. Add Brian Whitman for comedy. I think Whitman could help out Boomer. When Brandon Tierney's contract expires at WEPN, make a play for him. Add him to the AM drive show. "Boomer, Brandon & Brian...the killer Bees!". Midays with Evan Roberts and Sid Rosenberg..."Roberts & Rosenberg". Sid would have to clean up his image. Listeners like Sid. Tell Francesa he needs a co-host. Team Francesa with Joe Benigno..."Mike & Joe". Joe with Mike would be fantastic. Think about it.

I've been contacting NYC PDs at random and asking Pds if they read message boards. If they read them, which ones. WFAN's Spitz was very candid. He reads NYRMB from time to time. He was not aware of this fine radio site...so I spread the word.

Monday I spoke with my "birdie" in the WCBS-FM Programming Department. He doesn't read radio message boards. Folks will send him links to radio boards if CBS-FM is mentioned. My contact was aware of radio-info. I asked this little "birdie" if Max Kinkel would do another "radio great" shift? Maybe down the road. He states Max had very low ratings when he did it. Only other jock with lower #s was Bobby Jay. Interesting.

I've been palying phone tag with WINS PD Mark Mason to ask him a few questions. He will back back from vacation on Monday. I tried to get in contact with Tom Poleman from Clear Channel NY. Still waiting for a call back.

It so sad that WPLJ's Scott Shannon got soft on the air. He was on top of his game from 1983 to 1988. I can't listen to Scott & Todd. I enjoyed Scott with Ross Britain and J.R. Nelson. Speaking about Ross, per About Radio, he did reports for CNN while he worked at Z-93/Atlanta. I never knew that.

Uncle Mel keeps on spending cash. Sirius XM went crazy with full page ads in all the local papers last week. Nice ads for Mad Dog Russo.

If you have radio news/press releases... email me at [email protected]

Mega dittos!

Maybe you're not in WPLJ's target demo?

Response to the thread title: Yes, I know some that do.

In response to the call for FAN to get rid of Craig Carton, that's crazy. I enjoy the chemistry between Boomer and Carton and it very visable when Craig isn't there that the show suffers (pace and excitement level) big time. I was never an Imus listener on FAN but I do listen to the show now. I can see some people having a bit of a hard time listening to Craig but get over it. He's excellent at what he does. Radio needs big personalities like this to attract listeners.

Just my opinion.

Wow, I didn't think ratings had anything to do with it. I figured that ratings differences between the different Radio Greats would be negligible, and that availability and affordability would be the determining factors.

Your "birdie" is misinformed.
There are no individual "one night" Sunday ratings.....so thats really impossible to tell.
However, the station doesnt cume very much on Sunday nights as a whole if that helps.

Bobby has already been brought back again.

I don't believe "my birdie" is misinformed. He's very high on the CBS-FM "Programming Chain". Maybe Arbitron gives instant data via the new PPM system. Or maybe CBS-FM has special research. Next time I speak to my contact, I'll ask him to be more clear on this subject. Thanks.

I would never let what is written in a local paper dictate what is done with programming.

politics.

I'm telling you that the information is incorrect.
In fact, Bobby has already returned once more.
The appearance and disappearance of certain personalities has NOTHING to do with
Sunday night ratings.

What a fun and fascinating thread! :)

SPRINGFIELDRAD, your "birdie" put it the way he did to be nice, with the hope that you'd buy the explanation why Max won't be back. Obviously, you did and he succeeded.

It was a nice way of NOT having to explain to you that the night that Max did the Radio Greats show, not only did he not endear himself to CBS-FM management, but he also succeeded in pissing off CBS-FM staffers who were working that night and had something to do with the production of the show.

It's too bad. Max had previously been disabled from a very serious car accident that was not his fault and this was his chance after a long recuperative period to get back in the game. Quite frankly, he blew it.

Re: Max

Max Kinkel was a delight to work with. I found him to be a friendly and real person off the air, who was encouraging to me while making his critiques and suggestions. His perspectives and advice made me better on-air, and I am thankful for the experience. Although he may have some interesting quirks (like we all have to some degree), I would think that anyone willing to invest in the MaxMan and support his talents would be pleased with the results.
