St. Augustine's WSJF to become WYRE-FM

Surprised this was not talked about the other day when Tom Taylor had something in TRI about new owner of 105.5 in St. Augustine having dropped Taylor a note.

The station is going live and local by March 7 and will have a new set of calls which is going to be WYRE-FM and is suppose to be a take off the Annapolis station WRNR. If you think about it the format you hear on WRNR is likely to be the permanent format in St. Augustine. The studios will be at the old WSOS studio in St. Augustine off SR 16, which they are leasing out presumably from Renda.

Here is my hunch to what WYRE will stand for: St. Augustine...This is Your Rock Experience Station...105.5 WYRE. I wish they had come around two years ago and bought the station while I was still there in St. Augustine. Would have loved to been there and possibly had a job in radio to start with. Oh well thing happen for a reason.

I got my hands full these days traveling the state and covering HS football (which is a year round thing now). I will listen to the station no doubt when I am in St. Augustine.

Stratton Road or Blvd....the studios are like at the dead of that street...it is off SR 16. Not sure of a physical address.

Nice idea, but a very poor signal and no money to advertise will amount to this being a non-event.

Steve Kingston is a veteran programmer and he’s smart. IMHO this AAA type format has better odds at success here with our track record than other markets. It wouldn’t be far fetched to think Steve sees opportunity in rock lovers just 25 miles up the road. But people have to be able to hear you. Today, it’s more common than ever for people to listen to out of market radio stations so St. Augustine references won’t matter - the music is the draw.

I wonder if a lease arrangement with a station like WJSJ 105.3 or someone else could be in the works down the road? This has to be easier to sell than progressive talk. Add a high profile morning show and this could get real interesting.

As far as promotions go, something like Facebook can help spread the word as one friend tells another who tells another. Even a combined 2 station share can have impacts in Jax. Thoughts?

I love their music, the jocks talk a little too slow but thats that old FM vibe and appropriate for the history that station has in that market...I lose it at the 9A/Phillips Highway intersection, can't pick it out at home (St. Nicholas) at all.

IMO, WYRE calls would be better as "105.5 the Wire (wyre)"

cd

CD...Good catch..I didn't see that to start with...105.5 The Wire....That could be something! I bet anything that they will carry some HS sports on the station as well.

As for the street...yes I think they did change the name of the street as they shifted Stratton over a few feet to the east due to a new subdivision going in.

WYRE was a small AM on 810 in Annapolis - a Top 40 station back in the day. 250 watts of pure heat -I remember it as a kid in the 70's.

WYRE was a smokin' Top 40! It's 250 watts radiating from a tower essentially on the water in the Chesapeake Bay had amazing coverage. You could hear it just about anywhere on the Bay, hence the slogan during their marine weather forecast "The Official Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association Station." IIRC, Steve was PD at WYRE for a time.

FWIW, 810/WYRE is still on the air up in Annapolis, still pumping 250 watts out into the Chesapeake Bay. No one knows what the current format is, since no one has listened to it since around 1973.

But, yes, it was a pretty good little Top 40 back then, functioning as kind of a "halfway house" for major league jocks between gigs in Baltimore & DC for several years. You know, a place to land within commuting distance while firing out airchecks.

Interestingly, Kingston & Company don't own WYRE(AM)--and IIRC, you do need to gain the licensee's permission to use the calls on FM. It's been awhile now, but it seems to me that Kingston might have bought WRNR(FM) from the same folks...

WYRE-AM 810 is listed as Spanish language and holds a construction permit to move its tower site to Baltimore utilizing a two-tower directional antenna pattern and a community of license change to Essex, Maryland.

Since everyone's ears are pointed south for 94.1's flip, any news on 105.5?
