Standards back on 730/1440

Way to go Mike.. If AM gives us what we want (need).. it can be a player! Problem is that it has to be established again.. that takes time, and it will take commitment... time & money! If someone can convince the public that an AM station has the information, community commitment, and resources to meet that need, then it can survive. Years ago WARM was the place to go when something happened... an accident, emergency, breaking news. I remember driving up to the Moosic area in the mid 90's... as I was traveling on the interstate, I felt a rumble... I knew something in the area happened and it must have been BIG! I tuned to WARM.. Phillies game.. WILK.. All Talk... WMGS.. Adult hits.. two or three other stations, all automated.. no one broke in.. and I knew at that point no station could provide the information necessary to let the public know what happened. Of course it was the explosion that destroyed a plant in the Scranton area that made explosives.. the entire plant was leveled! Same thing for the Tornado in Mountaintop, this time last year.. nothing. Yeah the TV stations doing cut-in's.. problem was that we had no power in the area and TV was not an option... OH, the station designated to serve Mountaintop (WBHT).. yeah, big help.. kept right on playing teeny-bopper hits.. way to "serve the public"! AM is not dead, it's just being ignored by the people who do know how to use a valuable resource. That bridge AM programmers have to cross will be long and dangerous.. but, I'm sure when Mike get's to that bridge.. he'll know the air speed of the African Swallow!

Speaking of which, whatever happened to WPUU, the WB Emergency Broadcast Station? W P-U was something I'd love to have programmed from my own studio and done something with. Like, what it was supposed to do.

Nice write up on WNAK in the Sunday Voice, Fr. Tom.

Even if WS Media is not going to set the world on fire playing music on AM radio in 2009, it's got to be better for their bottom line than Caliente. First step, stay in business. Then you can start worrying about everything else.

Say what you want about AM radio dead by 1980 look at the numbers for WNAK until some idiot or idiot's changed format to Taco Bell radio and no its not the Mexican phone company (ha ha) Trust me there are still a lot of old farts who love music for the dead format Wnak will be number 4 in the market when the spring book comes out

>>>Trust me there are still a lot of old farts who love music for the dead format.<<<

And those wind-expellers spend money, same as people who keep it in. You just need a few national advertisers: Metamucil, support socks, Depends, PoliGrip, etc.

Ringo: Thank you; much appreciated.

Blame:

1) Owners
2) Management
3) Automation

Automation does not make decisions. But I understand what you mean: the desire to cut costs (AP "wire," on-duty announcers, active music library, etc.) leads to minimal-service and no regard for PICON.

I don't blame automation.. I blame the owners... for putting in automation. I'm an avid listener of AM and "I'm not dead yet" either! I listen to ESPN 630 & 1240... WFAN out of NY... I want sports.. and I get it on the AM. I suffer through engine noise and the heater fan buzz in the wintertime... but I still listen to AM radio... I just don't turn on the heat! That's how much I want what AM gives me... my sports.. Paul Harvey... News... local events. But it's few and far between. The AM stations out there are either all playing the same stuff and automated. Don't get me going on WARM, what a travesty. Funny thing... back when I did my morning show, I was constantly told.. You can't talk for more than a minute or two.. people want you to play music and not talk. I always countered that the music was secondary.. the talk was the important thing.. it brought listeners in.. made them loyal. Today I listen to programs... Jumpin' Jeff on KRZ.. afternoons he basically becomes a talk show host on an All Music station... and it works. Daniels & Webster have Chip the Beer Guy, Sport Wagering guests... they talk for 1/2 hour sometimes without a song.. Kid Kraddick and his gang basically talk without ever playing a song, and the show is aimed at kids! You have to be unique.. break the mold and give listeners something they want, but stop listening to the stuffed shirts who tell you how to program.

I agree somewhat---and we're getting off topic here, but I gotta put my 2c worth in. When I was doing mornings with Ted Rose and again with Kerry Kearns we talked a LOT...but we also got feedback from listeners that the talk was entertaining, informative and occasionally funny. If the SUBSTANCE is there, people will listen....and I agree that you can build listenership that way. Ted and I had a BUNCH of people who followed us around....mostly to bars, but, hey......and Kerry and I were starting to build that. There ARE people who don't like to listen to people talk, but my philosophy is that a proper mix of everything will do the trick. You just have to be savvy enough to know what the proper mix is.

Tried to see if the wnak website was updated.... got this error "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded - The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit." Kinda sums it all up.

That rumbling you hear is Bob Nielsen rolling over.

I would hope that they don't go after just the "50 to death" market. Standards can be marketed to people with sophisticated musical taste, not just old people. Think of the old WNEW/WQEW out of NYC or 740 AM out of Toronto.

And there are more "old people" than just grandma on a fixed income. Many retirees, who would appreciate this music, have disposable income as their cars, mortgages and kids' education bills are long paid off. Don't know if there are any of them in our market, but they are out there. ;D

It was there the other night, I swear, then I started getting that bandwith limit error. There wasn't much there yet anyway.

Interestingly, Route 81 never killed the wnakfm.com site, that still shows WNAK, WCDL, WAZL (which they do not own anymore) and the "new" Lite 94.3.
